Compression Stockings - wear to sleep?

I was prescribed grade 1 compression stockings because of the DVT I had in May. The doctor told me to make sure I put them on first thing in the morning, after my shower, and that I can take them off when I go to bed, or otherwise if I'm laying down and can keep my legs elevated.

My question: Can I wear them while I sleep? Or are there negative side effects from wearing compression stockings 24 hours a day?

I only ask because a couple of times I was just too tired at night to take them off before sleeping.. you know how difficult those things are to put on and take off. When I wake up in the morning my legs and ankles feel stiff, but on those nights where I didn't bother removing my stockings, I woke up with my legs feeling a little itchy at the top of the stockings, but otherwise fine and free of stiffness.

Portal Vein Thrombosis

In July of this year I was diagnosed with a blood clot blocking my portal vein (to the liver) My symptoms were pain and extreme nausea. The ER docs misdiagnosed this as gallstones, but 2 days later my GP ordered a CT with contrast, which found the clot. I still have pain, although not as severe or as often. I'll be on blood thinners for 6 months I'm told. My only risk factor was the birth control pill. Since this is so rare, I feel as though none of the doctors really know what to expect so far as a prognosis or complications. A repeat scan 5 weeks later showed no change in the clot. Does anyone here have this condition? I would be interested in hearing your experience.

DVT and Pregnancy

Has anyone gotten a DVT due to pregnancy? How were you treated? Was it during your pregnancy or after your pregnancy? And how did this affect later pregnancies?

I am 23 years old and developed a DVT in my left groin at about 37 weeks. I went in for an ultrasound due to pain and swelling and they didn't find anything. Four days later, with worsening symptoms, I went in again and had a clot that was almost a foot long. I was in the hospital for 10 days before they induced me. I had a healthy baby girl and then was put on coumadin for 6 months. I still have residual clot that probably won't go away. My leg still swells and my veinsd are quite the sight. My Dr thinks I'll probably have to do blood thinners throughout all future pregnancies.

Thrombophilia screen/ Pradaxa

I have been on Warfarin since January this year, and it looks as if I will be kept on it until the haematologist decides it is 'safe' for me to come off it so he can undertake a thrombophilia screen. He believes that there may be a family history of clotting that needs to be investigated-however, if I come off warfarin totally, am I not then at risk if I do indeed have a clotting problem? Is there not another test that can determine this without the possible risk associated risk of coming off warfarin altogether ?
Also, I was wondering if any of you have changed over to Pradaxa as an alternative to warfarin. I have approached my GP about this possibility if I should have to stay on drugs for life, but was not given a definitive answer.
Many thanks .

DVT and work

I was diagnosed with a DVT behind my right knee back in January this year. However, my ability to do my job is now declining- I work as a Customer Service Manager and drive approx 50k miles per year, with a round-trip commute to the office of 140 miles. Because my calf and the back of my leg are now painful if I sit too long, I am no longer able to sit in the car for more than 45 minutes without having to stop and walk around for 10 minutes.
So, I was wondering if any of you have approached your employers to ask for flexible working? The initial response from my HR dept. was not too positive, so I will refrain from taking this further until I have looked at the options open to me.I suppose my fear is that I will lose my job, but realistically my time is now limited beacuse I cannot now sit still for too long.
Is there any financial assistance I can obtain from the state? Is DVT classed as a disability? I would appreciate your advice and comments please.
Many thanks.

2 months after DVT diagnosis...

I have no prior history of DVTS or blood issues. On 4/19/2010 I was diagnosed with a DVT in my right femoral vein extending down to below my knee. A couple weeks ago, I was almost back to normal and went on a pain free (yay!) 2 mile walk. As of last week, my leg pain is slowly coming back, and my leg is even swelling a little. I had a ultrasound today and the tech indicated that there has been no change to the clot and it still remains.

I have had a pretty regular INR of about 2.9. Still taking coumadin, I was only on the Arixtra for a few days back in April.

I have a couple questions...

1. Why would the pain come back after seeming to go away previously?
2. Besides the Coumadin, does anyone recommend another treatment?
3. Being 2 months on the Coumadin, am I still at risk for PE?
4. Should I continue with my regular activity, or should I be taking it easy?
5. Does anyone suggest Catheter-directed thrombolysis? What are the risks of doing it?

Thanks!
jen

Hi everyone - just found this site - it is very informative.

I had a dvt last year and did the 6 months of warfarin. Touch wood so far so good since being off it. Unfortuately I do still suffer with some pain etc and whilst I was on warfarin obviously I couldn't take ibuprofen. However, I would like to know if it is ok to have it now and if it would help ease the pain I have with regards to the after effects of the dvt.

Thanks.

Hi
just interested to know this. I was diagnosed with 2 clots a year ago, one small one in my left groin
that has improved a little, but the bigger one in my right leg from knee to groin, is still pretty much
clotted with decent blood flow but has grown 2 new collateral veins to compensate, hence nonpain,
swelling or discoloration since .
can anything be done a year on or is this something that I have to live with.
I'm waiting to see my hema Dr to get results of bloodwork & to find out if I need to stay on coumadin
.
any advice would be great.
btw I feel great , keeping weight down, swimming, walking, staying hydrated etc.
much love x

INR and Diet

I find it really interesting that none of you have questioned your diet regarding your INR.

Close to 5yrs ago now, at the age of 36, my husband had aortic valve replacement (mechanical) and will be taking Coumadin for the rest of his life. This is to stop the blood from coagulating on the valve. When we first heard about greens being an issue, the antidote to Coumadin, I was in a bit of a tizzy. I thought about what he was going to eat; do I have to make separate meals for him, etc. This is not at all the case.

I recently (two weeks ago) experienced a DVT in my right leg. I did not have any swelling, redness or heat in the area. It just felt like I had a charlie horse in my calf, without ever getting the charlie horse! Went through all the steps of injections for 7days and now, I to have to take Coumadin every day. Once the DR. decides to take me off Coumadin they will test me for "sticky blood" and other possible factors like L5, that has also been mentioned in the forum.

Hi All,after 2 massive DVTs last summer I have been told this week that I can stop taking Warfarin but I am still on heavy duty pain killers as my leg never went back to it's normal size and is still badly bruised. The doc at the hospital told me I have post phlebetic syndrome and that the valve in my leg was badly damaged and he is referring me to a vascular surgeon.Has anyone else experienced this?and did anyone have an operation of any kind?
Thanks.

New pain in DVT leg

Hi all, I have not been here before so will quickly give a summary. I am 30 years old and had a DVT in January after my daughter was born. I was on Warfarin for 3.5 months so have been off it now for about 3 months. I have not had ny pain at all until now. I can feel some pain in the same area as I had my DVT before. I am wondering if I should leave it to see if it gets worse for a bit as I know you can get pain after a DVT anyway. At the moment it is really not that bad but I can feel it IYKWIM - Also when I palpate it it hurts. I don't have any other reason to get another DVT and it seems a very short time afterwards.
I had a Thrombophilia screen a few weeks ago (I dont know what the results were) and have an appointment to see the haematologist at the end of August.
What do you think?
Many thanks
Martha

Hey all...a google search brought me here, hopefully you guys can help me out.

I have a DVT in my calf following a knee surgery. No one told me to get up and move after the surgery to prevent a clot, so I just kind of laid around. Anywho, its pretty painful and it really hurts to stand or walk..but the Dr. tells me I should be walking on it...is this safe? I'm scared I am going to dislodge it or something...They give me a heparin shot once a day as well as I take warfarin once a day. Im a 25 year old who is otherwise in good health...a bit heavy, but I just had a baby a while ago, so I'll blame that on that LOL. Thanks for any help and any insight you are able to give me....as well as when will the pain go away? Cause man, this hurts. Thanks.
