Scared & seeking advice

Hi all -- I am so glad to have found this forum and am so relieved to have some people to turn to!

If you will forgive a bit of a long and sad-sacky story, 2 years ago I lost my job and have been in and out of a depression since then. I stopped exercising (I know, I know) and gained a lot of weight from my already overweight point, and as a kicker -- I smoke. So really, I kinda deserve to drop dead, and I know that ... it makes me ashamed but does not shake me out of my stupor. I have spent most of my time on my laptop -- curled up in the corner of my sofa, one knee in the air, on knee tucked underneath me, with the computer perched on the arm. Hours and hours and hours in this position over the past 2 years.

Last week I went to the movies, to one of those theaters where you have to walk like a mile to get to your show, and I got a cramp in my leg. Generally when I get leg cramps they are in my calf, but this was very high on my thigh, almost to my butt (in my right leg... read more

Has anyone experienced this after a DVT? I had my DVT back in December/Jan and am now off Warfarin. Everything has been fine up until a week or so ago when I started having this foot pain, worse in one foot than the other. It has gradually been getting worse and my feet feel really heavy and painful.

Let see about two years ago i had a lateral release (And cleaning) done to the right knee to fix a long standing injury.

Four days after surgery i developed a dvt and two days after that parts broke of and i got pulmonary embolisms (i waited a day to go in Dumb ehh.lol)

I was put on warfin for ten months and seem to have no permanent damage.

Problem is if i walk to hard or to far or exercise too much everything from the knee down starts feeling like its much heaver.
If i keep pushing i start having trouble controlling it and and keeping my foot from flopping around.

Had ultrasounds done and circulation appears fine.

Had a mri done and it only showed mild swelling in the knee.

Never test appeared fine also.

This didn't happen before the surgry/dvt and only happens from the knee down.
I was sent to a specialist doctor Charles Godfrey who diagnosed me with osteochondritis .
Only problem is he kept forgetting which leg it was and repeating questions 10 sec after ... read more

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum as I was only diagnosed with my first DVT two days ago, so am trying to find out all I can at the moment! I had a pretty bad ache in my calf for three weeks, and I just assumed it was restless legs syndrome as it really helped the pain to get up and walk and jog around. Finally went to my GP on Friday and because I'm on the contraceptive pill he sent me for a scan, even though I'm only 28 so he wasn't hugely worried. The scan showed a DVT in my peroneal vein. So I spent the day in hospital having all sorts of tests.
The plan is that I'll be going into hospital every day to get my INR tested, and to have clexane injections until my INR reaches 2.5. I'll also be taking warfarin for 6 weeks.
Six weeks doesn't seem very long compared to everything else I've read about people being put on it for months - has anyone else been put on it for only 6 weeks?
Told my mother about it all today and she wasn't at all surprised and revealed that I actually ha... read more

Getting INR checked while visiting the US ?

I'm a UK citizen and I'm going to be in the US for a couple of weeks soon on business.
My INR has been a little unstable recently and I've been advised by the anti-coag
clinic to get my INR checked while I'm in the US in case I need to adjust my warfarin
dose. I know from past experience that without insurance as a "walk-in" patient i'll
probably have to pay a lot for an INR test, probably $250 or more. I'm wondering if
there is a cheaper/better way of going about this ?

Despite numerous phone calls to dvt clinic and gp surgery, they both say that theres no need for me to wear compression stockings other than going on a long car journey or on a plane. It has been 5 long months since my dvt and i would like to hear from anyone who has not worn these and if they have had any problems. My dvt was in the popliteal vein, i have no pain and no swelling. Appreciate any replies. Thanks.

Ultrasound update

I had my ultrasound on my legs this morning, the one on my right leg (occluded from popiteal to femoral), is still present with good blood flow but I have grown 2 collateral veins, which I think is good news?, the one on my legt femoral has shrunk a bit but has extremely good blood flow.
Whilst this is not the news I was hoping for, it is what I suspected, I asked the radioligist how they can tell a new blood clot from an old blood clot & she said its almost impossible to tell, but she said she had never seen 2 collateral veins to compensate, only ever 1.
I'm a medical mystery lol.
So now to my hematologist for results from my blood work & to find out if I can come off Coumadin. Lets hope so ...........

Would you recommend a vascular surgeon ?

Hi all
I've had my clots ( one in each leg), for almost a year, with very little improvement, apart from growing 2 new colatteral veins in the major one. I'm told to be on coumadin for another year, then maybe for life depending on the results from my ultrasound then.
I have no clotting dosorders, I got them on a long haul flight.
I'm just curious as to whether it's worth it to see a vascular surgeon, to see if there's anything that can be done to remove the clots my body hasn't dissolved.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Compression stockings

I was diagnosed with severe DVT from groin to both ankles and also renal thrombosis in April. My complete story is on here in a couple of places under just Mike. My question is related to compression stockings. Anyone have any tricks for keeping knee high stockings to stay up. I have to pull up my pant legs and adjust mine all through the day. Originally I was told that I had to wear thigh highs but I am a very large guy (6'3" 280 lbs) and cannot find a pair that fit unless custom made and I live in a very rural area and the closest place to get them custom fitted is 3 hours away. My Dr gave me 2 pairs of xxl knee highs and told me to try them. The most severe of my DVT was in my lower leg. They seem to fit ok but roll down alot and start to feel like they are cutting off circulation. Any tricks or ideas would be great. Thanks in advance.

Menstruation and INR

Has anyone experienced a decrease in their PT/INR during PMS and menstruation? I am 35 yrs old and developed a DVT/PE this January. I have been hospitalized 4 times this year with DVTs and each time I am just starting my mentrual when the pain starts and my INR/PT drops. I have seen two hematologists and no one can get my INR theraputic/consistant for more than 2 weeks. The one thing that is the same each time my INR drops is the time of the month/cycle. I had never put that connection together until last month. I have discussed it with my docs and they are looking to see if there could be a connection. I have had numerous tests and thousands of dollars later I am exhausted and desperate for help. One thing I should add is that when I had my daughter 14 years ago I hemoraged and had numerous blood transfusions. I had what they called Help Syndrome and D.I.C was another term used during that time. I dont know if these could be a factor but maybe someone has had something similar.

This is also known as 'Lupus Anticoagulant' but does not necessarily mean you have lupus or 'Hughes Syndrome'. If you have it, have you had any of these symptoms:

--Multiple Miscarriages
--Neurological Symptoms (muscle weakness, falling, balance/vertigo issues, numbness, etc.) or other symptoms that mymic Multiple Sclerosis
--Stroke or TIA's (transient eschemic attacks--mini strokes)
--Frequent, intense migraine headaches
--Clotting when young, or
--Any other symptoms your doc attributes to this disorder?

In hindsite, every medical issue I've ever had (that is not attributable to an accident or a snakebite) is attributable to this disorder and my FVL. I read that chronic gallbladder problems or early removal of it is common in FVL sufferers, but no connection has been made to know why. I had mine out at 24 y/o!

I'd like to hear from any and all of you w/ APS!

My Mum has been put on heptarin and warfarin following a blood clot in her arm. INR
was over 10 yesterday so the hospital took a chest x-ray and seemed happy with
that. Heptarin and warfarin have now been stopped and she has been given a dose of
Vit K. . Anything I should be asking the doctors - I dont' know whether to be
concerned or whether this is normal til things have settled .

On Comadin long term

So i've just seen my hematologist who has reviewd my ultrasound & blood test results , and has recommended I stay on Coumadin lon term, by this, he says I should have another ultrasound in a year, if both clots ( 1 in each leg), have gone, then we can discuss the possibility of coming off of it, but right now the risks of coming off of it with blood clots still present, outweigh the benefits of staying on it. I'm fine with this, it took me a while to get my head around it initially, but I feel safer on it as my clots have only improved a little in the year I've had them.
I have no clotting disorders.
I feel fine, keeping my weight down, excersizing regularly, keeping hydrated, no pain swelling or discoloration, so I feel lucky x

Muscle pain after DVT

Hi everyone,
I was diagnosed with DVT in my left calf after a long haul flight 10 months ago and received heparin, warfarin and stocking treatment to deal with it. Warfarin gave me a lot of problems especially haziness and pain whenever my INR level went beyond 3. I found it difficult to stabilise my levels and they regularly fluctuated between 1.3 and 5.4. At the time the levels were high, I started to get bad pains in the muscles at the back of my legs, especially thighs and buttocks. I turned from being a very flexible person into someone who felt like a stiff and creaky 80 year old. While my clot dissolved within 10 weeks and I was off the warfarin after 3 months, the pain in my legs (both) has remained and intensified. The doctors have no answer and tell me to keep stretching which is very painful and also does not seem to improve the condition of my muscles. This pain also causes problems when I am driving. After 30 minutes in the car, my left lower thigh hurts so much I have... read more

Hello to you all, I am new to this following some invasive internet seaching for some support groups about this dvt thing.

Im out of hospital about a wk now, after being in for 3wks, due for follow up in 3days to the hosptail again. Excuse the talk but I feel like death! The pain in my leg is unreal, still very swollen, looks like corned beef, and hard to walk around on, not to mention the fact that they have released me prob with still a small PE on my lung, cause I can barely make it up the hallway of my house. Im on Clexane injections twice a day, and am bruised to the hilt from it, like Ive gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson. Im also anaemic, I look like a ghost according to the nurse who took my INR today in the OP Department of the local hosp.. My hospital doctor gave me a copy of a letter which he sent to my family doc to update him, this is what it says: "presented with an extensive DVT. At time of the angiogram, it was noted that I had a complete occlusion of the lower i... read more

I'm 36 and just got my first DVT in June 2010 from being on birth control for only a year. I decided to get on birth control because I was dating someone. Now that I have this health issue he decided to break up with me. This summer has been very hard. Can't do much. Especially at the early stages of therapy. The swelling started in my right foot. My heal was swollen for two weeks. One morning I woke up with a charlie horse in my right calf. The clot traveled from my foot to behind my knee. I was on levonox injections twice a day for two weeks. Now I'm on warfin 10mg a day. My doctor never suggested a stocking. I'm gonna look into it. My ankle is always swollen especially at the end of the day. My doctor is hoping to take me off the warafin after 3 months. I have my 3rd ultrasound appointment scheduled for September to see if the clot has dissovled. My Doctor mentioned to me yesterday there is a chance I can get another clot in my leg within a year after being off of the wa... read more
