Just got diagnosed with Protein S Deficiency

Hi all,

Well just got diagnosed with Protein S Deficiency, did two tests that came back at 45% and 40% respectively and am absolutely gutted. Can anyone who has this condition provide advice on what I should and shouldn't be doing or taking? Doctor told me not to worry about taking Warfarin, no contact sports but exercise is fine. Is their any vitamin supplements people would recommend taking or is aspirin something that is a must for me now?

For reference I'm 32, reasonably healthy but out of shape since I broke my leg last year and got a DVT from it. Since then have had no problems since that DVT got fixed using Warfarin and no DVT recurrence.

Regards,

Mike

Hello all ,

I am 34 male currently travelling the world after having a very large DVT with a PE last yr feb 09, after being told that i would lose my leg , thankfully i had a very good haematologist that argued my case with surgeon who wanted to cut it off !

I am self testing as i have my own inr machine , i test every week and always around 2.0 . 2.5 , overall i am very healthy probably more so than before my DVT.

however in the last few weeks , i am getting a very hot leg where i was affected last yr, almost burning and can feel though a pair of jeans or thick pants , can anyone shed any light on this , as i am not home for another 3 months and a little worried about this .

Chris UK in Australia at the moment :)

Many thanks in advance :)

Hey, This is my first time on this site and I'm wondering why I never found this earlier would have been very supportive at the start of my DVT.
I developed a clot at the beginning of this year and was on medication for 6 months which I have just come off. My left leg which is where the DVT developed is still bigger than the right leg and it gets me down from time to time seeing as I'm 18 and never expected this to be something I had to worry about at this age. So I was wondering if anyone knew any exercises or anything that might help reduce the size back to normal and whether this is common?

My husband had a dvt in his femoral vein three weeks ago. I recognised the signs and got him to hospital, he was given heparin for three days and has been on warfarin ever since.Would it be safe to make love , he thinks it would but I am not sure and just dont want to do anything that puts him at risk. Please could anyone give any advice, I am aware the clot is still there and would rather wait for a few months.

I've read on here where some people with dvt's taking coumadin
have side effects and have to switch to Lovenox or Arixtra.
What were your side effects???
I have been on coumadin for 1 month and have not felt good from the
beginning. Nausea seems to come and go all day long.
I was diagnosed with 2 small clots in my upper calf and a larger
dvt in my inner thigh. After four weeks the 2 in my calf are finally
starting to heal or be absorbed. The larger one in my thigh still
hurts as bad as day 1.

Hi all... have not posted in awhile - my case: July '06 DVT knee to groin, multiple PE's both lungs after knee injury & immobility / birth control pills (do not smoke, healthy weight, 25 years old etc.)

I still have chest pain quite frequently - esp. after activity. Went for a follow-up CT Scan / EKG a couple weeks ago and all clear no new clots and old clots are all gone. YAAY what a relief - only explanation for chest pain has been "chest wall inflammation" which I don't understand.

I'm still on coumadin (8th month now) for my DVT - leg still turns blue / tingles / red "lace" patterns on calf but there is next to no swelling or pain. I never actually had any swelling with my DVT (very lucky here). I still wear good compression stockings every day to help with tingling / colour changes.

OKAY so now my question! I have an appt. on April 2 with a Hematologist to see if I have any genetic / hormonal clotting factors. If it turns out there is nothing then I can stop c... read more

Chest infection three weeks after DVT / PE ?!

Hi folks,

Have been reading the forum with interest one and off over the past two or three weeks.

I ended up with a DVT in my calf after a flight home recently. This was missed inititally by hospital and two days later i was rushed back in with chest pains. To cut a long story short i had clots in both lungs and diagnosed with a pulmary embolism.

I have been back home for nearly 4 weeks now and getting better slowly but surely. Last week my girlfriend contracted a cold. Typically it passed her over in a couple of days and then i caught it, same symptoms etc.

It has passed me over too but i still feel it in my chest. Nothing too major as this usually happens to me over year or two after a cold (i'm only 26) and if it hasn't shifted by the end of the week i would go to the docs to get amoxicilin to help flush it out and bring up the mucus.

The thing i am wondering about is does my recent PE and DVT mean i have to be extra vigilant of anything and/or at higher risk of ... read more

EDTA Chelation Therapy

My father-in-law suffers from DVT and is also scheduled to have an artery from one leg, (the calf) bypassed by taking a vein out of his other leg due to the fact the artery has a clot.

He's concerned about this and we are wondering if anyone with DVT has ever gone through this proceedure and if it's the only option. He's concerned there might be problems and he may loose his leg.

We're also wondering if anyone with DVT has tried EDTA Chelation Therapy and if it has helped and where they received the therapy.

Thank you
Ryan

Please help! I taking 10mg warfarin a day ( I was diagnosed with dvt 2 years ago, and it is the 2nd one I've had! ) I am now on it for life. The trouble is I feel awful most of the time, headaches, numbness and tingling in feet and fingers, painful joints, lack of concentration and evening slurring my speech on occasion. I am convinced it is the warfarin as I seem to have most of the major side effects, but why is it that my warfarin clinic and GP both say that it can't be. My GP even try to make out I was depressed but I only feel down because I feel yuk! I believe there are alternatives to warfarin and I know it is potentially a life saver ( as no warfarin = blood clots ) but do they not offer one because warfarin is cheaper? I am trying to carrying on with life as normal, I am very busy running my own shop but work 6 days a week and am very tired anyway without feeling like this. I am 39 but most days feel like a women of 100! Does anyone have any idea who I could speak to next a... read more

Hi All
I have been diagnosed with my second case of a clot in my right leg. ( Hereditary Protein S deficiency)
I have very bad pain in my calf which worsens when I stand)

My question is should I keep my leg up or sit normally?
Also whilst walking is painfull the pain subsides the further I walk! Should I be walking or taking it easy?

Sorry, one more.
When should I expect the pain to subside as it is driving me mad :(

Hi all -- I am so glad to have found this forum and am so relieved to have some people to turn to!

If you will forgive a bit of a long and sad-sacky story, 2 years ago I lost my job and have been in and out of a depression since then. I stopped exercising (I know, I know) and gained a lot of weight from my already overweight point, and as a kicker -- I smoke. So really, I kinda deserve to drop dead, and I know that ... it makes me ashamed but does not shake me out of my stupor. I have spent most of my time on my laptop -- curled up in the corner of my sofa, one knee in the air, on knee tucked underneath me, with the computer perched on the arm. Hours and hours and hours in this position over the past 2 years.

Last week I went to the movies, to one of those theaters where you have to walk like a mile to get to your show, and I got a cramp in my leg. Generally when I get leg cramps they are in my calf, but this was very high on my thigh, almost to my butt (in my right leg... read more

Has anyone experienced this after a DVT? I had my DVT back in December/Jan and am now off Warfarin. Everything has been fine up until a week or so ago when I started having this foot pain, worse in one foot than the other. It has gradually been getting worse and my feet feel really heavy and painful.

Numbness and control problems in leg after dvt

Let see about two years ago i had a lateral release (And cleaning) done to the right knee to fix a long standing injury.

Four days after surgery i developed a dvt and two days after that parts broke of and i got pulmonary embolisms (i waited a day to go in Dumb ehh.lol)

I was put on warfin for ten months and seem to have no permanent damage.

Problem is if i walk to hard or to far or exercise too much everything from the knee down starts feeling like its much heaver.
If i keep pushing i start having trouble controlling it and and keeping my foot from flopping around.

Had ultrasounds done and circulation appears fine.

Had a mri done and it only showed mild swelling in the knee.

Never test appeared fine also.

This didn't happen before the surgry/dvt and only happens from the knee down.
I was sent to a specialist doctor Charles Godfrey who diagnosed me with osteochondritis .
Only problem is he kept forgetting which leg it was and repeating questions 10 sec after ... read more

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum as I was only diagnosed with my first DVT two days ago, so am trying to find out all I can at the moment! I had a pretty bad ache in my calf for three weeks, and I just assumed it was restless legs syndrome as it really helped the pain to get up and walk and jog around. Finally went to my GP on Friday and because I'm on the contraceptive pill he sent me for a scan, even though I'm only 28 so he wasn't hugely worried. The scan showed a DVT in my peroneal vein. So I spent the day in hospital having all sorts of tests.
The plan is that I'll be going into hospital every day to get my INR tested, and to have clexane injections until my INR reaches 2.5. I'll also be taking warfarin for 6 weeks.
Six weeks doesn't seem very long compared to everything else I've read about people being put on it for months - has anyone else been put on it for only 6 weeks?
Told my mother about it all today and she wasn't at all surprised and revealed that I actually ha... read more
