28 yrs old on warfarin for life

Hi everyone, Had my first Dvt 13 months a go, I ignored the pain thinking it was just muscular until I woke up in an ambulance after collapsing at home. Apparantly by ignoring the problem the clot had dislodged at travelled to my lung causing a PE. A few "i told you so's later" and I started on 6 months of warfarin treatment. After much variation in my INR level I finally stabalised on a dose of 13mg. Because of my age and no underlying reasons for the DVT I was referred to a Haematologist for further tests. These tests came back inconclusive and i was discharged from his care after only 2 appointments in January this year. This week I was woken in the night with an awful pain in my left leg (first dvt was right). After last years experiences I decided it best to get it checked out.... Glad I did because an ultrasound confirmed another blood clot in my calf. I have been told I am now on life long warfarin, I don't think I have totally accepted this yet. I... read more |

On September 21, 1979 while sitting at home watching The Roper's on TV I got this pulled groin feeling in my left leg when I got up to get a beer. I was alone at the time. It did not seem like a big deal at first then about 10 minutes later I noticed my jeans getting tighter. I went upstairs to change them when I noticed my swollen and blue/purple thigh as my toes began to lose feeling. I made it back downstairs to the phone and called an EMT friend of my father. When he saw the leg his eyes almost bulged out of their sockets. He simply said what hospital do you want to go to? It took about 30 minutes to get to the UMASS Medical Center. By this time I could not feel anything below my knee. The doctors in the ER were residents and interns who asked the same set of stupid questions. Finally, one asked me what I thought was wrong and I said, "I have blood clot in my leg." Their response was, "twenty-four year-olds do not have blood clots." Brilliant! By this time the pain was... read more |

Warfarin - cause of elevated Liver Levels?

Hi everyone - has anyone had elevated liver levels while on Warfarin? I'm on a very high dose of Warfarin (15mg for 6 days, 17.5mg for 1 day) because it interacts with the medicine I take for Crohn's disease (mercaptopurine, 6MP). I've been on the Warfarin since December (dvt and bilateral pe) with no "exit strategy" since the docs don't know on what caused the clots. (That's another story - I'm trying to track down if I ever had a positive Anticardiolipin test. Was told I did by one doc who at the follow up appt didn't remember that and couldn't find that test. Argh). Anyway, my Liver Levels (ALT and AST) have been rising - in Feb and May they were slightly elevated, and now both are moderately elevated (ALT is 132, AST is 220). My GP thinks this is caused by the Crohn's med because that's a known side effect (that is why they are checking my liver levels regularly). But I was on that same Crohn's med for more than 12 years as a teen/young adult and it never affected my liver... read more |

have hadd dvt for about a month now. have been out of hosp. for 2 weeks. problem is i am on the unemployeed list due to our company going bankrupt and now have no income or insurance. doctors tell me i have to get compression stockings. i am almost flat broke, the hosp. took care of most of my nest egg & savings acct & checking account, and now I have almost nothing to live on expt my husbands tiny income & it just barly pays housing & food cossts. I had an idea after puting on my thigh highs to go to church last sunday......Why cant I just use a small size tight fitting pantyhose or thigh high instead? i am 100% sure the support would not b as good as proper fitting compresion stockings, but would not it be better than nothing? Even if I put on say 2 layers at a time??? I may not be able to view this after a couple of weeks as our internet is going to be turned off due to lack of funds. Please, any help quickly is great thanx kay beauler |

August 13th 2010 (Friday 13th, go figure) I was admitted into the hospitol & diagnosed with DVT. I am 33 years old, in great shape (Was) and up untill a couple of days ago, was a heavy smoker. It has not been confermed, but the blood clot was thought to have been started when I ran our tractor off into a sink hole & got tossed around & banged up a bit. However, my father has a long history of health problems. (He had a stroke when he was only 37 or 38) NOW, Here is my conflits: I was told when I was released from the Hospital that I could slowly resume my regular work schedule. I am a parts department manager at a farm tractor dealership and am up on my feet 4-5 hrs a day, and sitting 3 to 4 hrs a day. NOT very great for DVT sufferers. 2) My wife found out that in 2006, 900,000 people had DVT, AND 200,000 PEOPLE DIED from complications with PE after having DVT. Yet a few people we know... read more |

Internal Jugular vein clot

Hi, I have recently had a load of clots removed from my internal jugular vein via surgery. The clots were originally caused by another surgery in the area and not by a clotting disorder. Has anyone had a clot in their internal Jugular veins? Was it extensive like mine? (from my ear to collarbone), I am not sure how much they managed to remove whne they went in, apprantly they got some flow back but the chances are it will reclot due to trauma. Can my body break down the rest of the clot? or is it impossible? Has anyone else managed to dissolve a clot in this location? I am on Warfarin for 6 months. (I am also taking nattokinase 200mg per day but being watched very carefully by warfarin nurse as I know thay are contradicted) My INR is stable at 2.9 Any advice would be appreciated! |

Hello everyone I have just found this wonderful forum and I am so excited because I have discovered others with an upper extreminity DVT. I was diagnosed 2 years ago with an Idiopathic DVT which started in the brachial vein of my left arm, continued into the subclavian vein and finished in my left jugular vein. I was on clexane for 12 - 18 months. Most of the clot disappeared but is still have residual clot in the subclavian and jugular veins. I no longer take any medication. Doctors tested me for many things and monitored me regularly for cancer. What I found interesting from reading others peoples stories, was previous to my clot I had been tested for MS as I was exhibitng many symptoms of MS and was tested on more than one occasion. I had periods of passing out and on one occasion doctors thought I may have had a stroke. However, scans gave me the all clear. Since the clot I have tested low positive on all my blood tests for the past two year for antiphospholipid syndr... read more |

i am 3 weeks post DVT and although my INR was once 2.5 it is now 1.5 or 1.7.my GP does not sem worried-she says my blood is still thinner than a 'normal' person, which is 1.i know a too high INR has the risk of bleeding, but are there risks with it too low, other than another clot might form?im really asking if i should worry or if it stays like this for the 6 months i am on warfarin, will it be ok? |

Hi, I have MS and recently had a Catheter Venogram to check for CCSVI, which i had a balloon angioplasty to treat, but in the venogram it was noted i also had May Thurner syndrome - narrowing/compression of the left illiac vein, I have always had a v faint tenderness of th eleft thigh but just thought i easily pulled that muscle. So since my internal jugular veins were dilated my left leg tenderness/stinging has become a lot more uncomfortable, so as i will not be getting the M-T treated for a month as i dont want to treat more than one thing at a time, is there any tips to relieve the stinging/tenderness discomfort of my left thigh? thanks |

I have a DVT from my pelvis to my ankle. My Vascular doctor whom I was given went I entered hospital A on Valentines Day said from the get go he likes to keep his patients on coumadin for 6 months to a year. I had a doppler at hospital A in April. I have been going to hospital B to thier coumadin clinic every 2 weeks. I went today and they say I am done as it has been 6 months, They told me to stop taking the coumadin and set up a doppler Sept 8th for a baseline. Who do I listen to? Shouldn't I have the doppler at the same hospital to compare the 2? The doctor at hospital b says it is not necessary. They just need a baseline for here on in, incase I develope another clot down the road. How long do most doctors recommend coumadin? |

I found this site about 6 weeks ago after having a suspected DVT in my right calf. I was put on to Tinziparin injections until the leg could be scanned. The scan 7 days later was negative and over the next few days the pain in the calf went but my breathing deteriated. The breathing was not to bad but was persistant so I went back and had a lung scan one week after the calf scan. This showed a PE and I was put back on the injections. One week later I woke up with a swollen left leg from the crutch to ankle. This was scanned 5 days later with the clot found to go from my belly button to the ankle. I was rather upset about the new clot so did a lot of research and found new clots could be treated with the clot busting drug TPA. I stormed around saying I would go anywhere in the UK and pay to have the treatment if a Dr could refer me. I met with a blank wall from the GP and acute hospital GP so I kept shouting. The afternoon after my leg scan I was called by a valscular consultant who ... read more |

Hi everyone, I hope someone can help me. I have been suffering pain in my calf for a few weeks now, within 10 minutes of sitting down I am in pain. In the past couple of days it has spread to my upper thigh and now hurts when I walk. I am due to get a Sector Colour Doppler test on my lower right leg on Monday morning. I am still sorting the insurance out and may have to pay upfront and claim later. Can anyone tell me roughly (in USA or Canadian dollars if possible!) how much this will cost? (I am not a permanent resident in this country so I don't qualify for healthcare.) Thanks Niamh |

Our 16 Year old daughter was struck by a 4WD while crossing a pedestrian crossing 8 months ago. After 14 days in ICU and a further 8 weeks in hospital she is slowly rebulding her life. Unfortunately she developed a DVT in the Iliac vein that extends from just above her knee to just below the renal vein. Fortunately they had put a IVC filter just below the renal vein whilst she was in ICU, which prevented the clot from getting to the heart and lungs. She now injects herself with Clexane daily and wears thigh length pressure stocking during the day. Given that she is looking at living with the consequences for the next 70-80 years we are looking for solutions that will give her the best quality of life. Without any further treatment the prognosis is leave the filter in and be in warfarin for the rest of her life. It will also limit air travel and present problems with child birth. We are hoping for something better. We are looking for ways of removing the clot and have seen there are... read more |

post arthroscopic surgery I developed a clot in the calf. Also a staph infection in the knee. I am post antibiotics for the infection and am dealing with knee inflamation and pain. I take 7.5 mg. of cumadin daily and my INR is usually 1.0. My doctor does not want to increase the dose. Am I ok. I am becoming more active and exercise with weights daily and walking. Also can one fly on cumadin safely? rona |

How did that pan out ?, I'm not sure he'll be able to do anything with my clots as they are over a year old. If you don't mind me asking, what was your out of pocket cost?? Regards |
