Is Your Blood Clean?

Pre-DVT I lived the life..healthy, fit, all of it..so I thought. Of course, that included the usual juggling of kids, family & social life, 50+ hour work week, not enough sleep, unhealthy diet (fast food, candy, soda, meat, dairy, coffee, wine, & the occasional social smoke or two). You know, the average American way of life; managing to keep the outside on par at the expense of my inside.

I ended up with a DVT (provoked by the use of b-control pills & Factor5 Lieden, & my busy life). Better now, but do realize that my lifestyle was a huge factor. I’ve looked into many venues on optimizing my health & merely want to share some of what I’ve discovered along the way.

-Exercise. Do cardio & circulate your blood. Per Dr. Oz (“You, The Owners Manual book), the person who exercises for at least 30 minutes & has a not so healthy diet is still healthier than the one who eats right, but doesn’t exercise.

-Stay hydrated (dehydration = thick blood). See “Your Body’s Many Cries ... read more

Do I need to get measured for compression hose

I must admit that I am sad to say that out of all the nurses and doctors that I saw while I was in the hospital, no one ever told me that I should be wearing compression hose while recovering from a dvt. This forum is where I learned of their great benefit. So my question is, do I need to get professionally measurred for them or can I just figure it out myself. I bought 2 pairs on my own, one at wal mart and one from off the internet. They really make an incredible difference in my mobility!!! Is there any harm in just measuring yourself? I just want to make sure that I am not harming my legs with an improper fit. I would greatly appreciate your replies!

Hi all, recently ive been experiencing some painful cramping in my left thigh. The pain
goes from the top of my knee and shoots up my thigh, the cramp always seems to be
there, although it peaks and its very painful. Its always in the one leg, the right one,
which is were my large clot was. It got so bad, i was crying last weekend and ended up
in A&E, they told me it was muscular and to go home and take some paracetamol. Ive
had the pains again yesterday and today. Im on Warfarin for life. Im just wondering if
anyone else has experienced this type of pain? Thank you.

Hi
Just wondering if anyone has experiences with waxing whilst on Warfarin? Prior to my DVT I used to get my eye brows waxed - have gone back to plucking since then as I am too scared to get them waxed in case I get massive bruises on my face! Is this just me being totally silly??? What are people's experiences with waxing?
Thanks

13 Years w/ Post DVT Pains

I am new to this forum, however I have been dealing with the DVT issue for 13 years. I had my dvt when i was only 19 years old. It was by far the largest ever found in my area of the US. It was from my left ankle to about a 1/4 inch from my lungs by the time they found it. Back in 1996 they were not as advanced with treatment as they are now so I spent months in ICU with nothing more than prayers, blood thinner and pain meds. The doctors could not go in and break it up for fear of a piece going to my lungs and they didn't want to risk going in to do anything else. Their hopes were that the blood thinner would help it disolve and absorb back into the vein walls and that my body would created alternate paths on it's own for the blood to travel. Eventually that all happened although there is a huge amount of residual damage left even 13 years later, I am alive and lived a normal life. I do have pain and swelling and I'm on Coumadin and wear these fancy stockings pretty often. I experi... read more

I have just recieved a letter stating I am going to have my filter which was put in for my DVT and PE 6 weeks ago taken out. It is being done on Thursday and I am really nervous and unsure what to expect.I was hoping someone could advise me and also I am worried that if they take it out does that mean i am more likely to have enough PE. Thank you and I look forward forward to your responses. Laura

nattokinase

I have a DVT in my right calf and am taking Coumadin for 3 months and then I will have another sonogram to see of the blood clot has 'resolved'. If it has not and they tell me to stay on Coumadin for another 3 months I'm considering trying 'alternative' options.
I've been reading a lot about nattokinase and I would very likely give it a try in lieu of another 3 months of Coumadin.
Does anyone have any experience in using nattokinase for blood clots?
Would like to hear your experience using it, good or bad.
Thanks for your time!

New blood-thinning stroke drug could save lives and cut reliance on warfarin
By Jenny Hope
Last updated at 2:42 PM on 30th August 2009

A new blood-thinning drug to prevent strokes could replace a commonly used treatment based on rat poison for thousands of patients. The drug called Pradaxa is one-third more effective at reducing the risk of stroke and blood clots in at-risk patients than warfarin, and cuts deaths by 15 per cent.

Warfarin, which is still used in large doses to kill vermin, has been a routine medication for preventing strokes since the 1950s. But it is inconvenient for patients because careful monitoring and regular blood tests are needed to prevent excessive bleeding from cuts or stomach ulcers, requiring frequent clinic visits.

It can also interact badly with other drugs and certain foods, including green vegetables and grapefruit. The new drug, Pradaxa, works by reversing and inhibiting the effects of thrombin, which is the substance responsible for cl... read more

I have a DVT from above my left ankle to my mid thigh. I contribute my DVT to being dehydrated, coupled with a long car
ride after vigorous exercise. My Doctor told me because of my low heart rate it made my DVT worse.I responded well to warfarin and to injections while in the hospital. Has anyone else had this problem and how long did it take to recover. I do have some swelling around my ankle late in the day. I am an avid cyclist. Thank you

42 year old male, in pretty good shape. I am a triathlete, and did an
Ironman last November in Arizona. Today I am limited to brisk walks
until I get the clearance from the doc (not that I could do much
anyway). about 7 weeks ago started getting shortness of breath on
exercise, progressed to while at rest. Several misdiagnoses,
bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, etc etc etc. until July 1 when I went
to the ER with severe pain on breathing (ironically, both my GP and
pulmonologist declared me in perfect health that morning, maybe a
touch of exercise induced asthma).

Diagnosed with multiple bilateral PEs. Searching for the cause, no
current evidence of DVT or upper body clots, all blood tests (factor
V, Antithrombonin 3, protein c/s, homoocystine, 20210 mutation) are
normal. Cancer screening and liver tests negative, CT of
pelvis/abdomen show no clots there (not an MRI though)

I have done some research while off work and discovered that endurance

My M.D. told me that since I had both a DVT and a few PEs my heart has to pump at and extra fast pace in order to circulate the blood in my body and as a result of this extra adrenaline will be pumped into my system making me anxious whether there is a reason or not. I have noticed just about all the people here have issues with anxiety.

Just before I was to go in for surgery to have a breast cancer tumor removed, we discovered I had a blood clot in my right calf. I started blood thinners right away and postpone the surgery two weeks.
Before I was wheeled into surgery I was to have a greenfield vara carva filter installed to catch the clot if it started to travel to my lungs and heart during surgery. The non-removeable filter did not open. Another one was installed and opened. They did a scan on the filters after the surgery to see the loudge placement of both filters.
Then 5 months later they looked at the filters again and the unopened filter had not moved. I am limited in activities the rest of my life as not to jar the filter and it spring open to rip the vein.
I am on coumadin since the surgery March 18 '08. I have all the nasty side effects and unreal pain in my lower back and legs, toes..I feel awful every morning..They say I am cancer free but keep me on the coumadin..my levels have been good the las... read more

Is any one prepared to control their bleeding if you are injured....
I am researching several products and would appreciate your experience...
Product 1: kytostat - package of band-aid strips
Product 2: woundstat - powder for larger area

I am a cyclist and continue to ride... But I am really leary about getting road rash and bleeding to death in the middle of no-where...

From my last post on taking vitamin k2 for bleeding, I received NO responses... I take it that no one is prepared to control their own bleeding, besides going to the hospital...
