Do I need to get measured for compression hose

I must admit that I am sad to say that out of all the nurses and doctors that I saw while I was in the hospital, no one ever told me that I should be wearing compression hose while recovering from a dvt. This forum is where I learned of their great benefit. So my question is, do I need to get professionally measurred for them or can I just figure it out myself. I bought 2 pairs on my own, one at wal mart and one from off the internet. They really make an incredible difference in my mobility!!! Is there any harm in just measuring yourself? I just want to make sure that I am not harming my legs with an improper fit. I would greatly appreciate your replies!

I'm new at this...DVT

I was diagnosed with DVT in groin to knee on Aug.3,09. First
week...shots and now Coumadin. My question is: Is it common to have
good days and then set-backs? I will feel good a couple of days and I
"do too much" which causes my leg to hurt and swell. Should I be more
careful and take a slower pace on the days I feel good...or is this
pretty common with a DVT? Will the "good days" get more common...and
the "bad days" get less common. Also, I am hopeful because I am having
days where the swelling and pain are very minimal. I want to insist I
have another ultra sound next week...is it too soon. What are your
thoughts? The post from all you folks has really helped. Thanks, bkg

Hi, my husband David was diagnosed as having 2 clots one in his calf and the other in this inner right thigh. He had Heparin for first 5 days followed by Warfarin. He is currently on 10mg/day and his INR fuctuated between 1.8 and 2.6. Currently at 2.1 (he forgot to take one of his doses last week) whch affected his INR. His company now want him to fly on a short haul flight from Aberdeen to Teeside. I am very alarmed about the thought of his flying again especially with his INR not having been consistantly stable. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We are at loggerheads about this as he wants to go and I don't want him to go!!!

Just the old clot or a new one?

I had a blood clot in the subclavian vein in my arm/chest in Dec 2008. It took a few months after treatment for that dull ache to go away and the veins in my chest to stop showing so promiently. Just in the last few weeks however that aching feeling is coming back. I'm not sure if I should be worried that the clot (which I dont think ever completely disappeared) is getting bigger again or another one is forming or if its just an ongoing symptom of the first one. Anyone had anything similar or have an opinion? Thanks

I was diagnosed on Dec 2008 with 4 blood clots, 3 on my right leg and 1 on my left leg. Since then I started a vegan diet and I am also taking warfarin. I was really hard for me when I heard that I had DVT. I was so afraid. I love to travel and I was worried that I may not be able to do it again. I am just writting today to say that since Dec 2008 I visited Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Bahamas, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, UK, Finland, Estonia, Russia, Greece, Czech Republic and Turkey. It is possible to flight without any problems. I made sure to drink plenty of water, take warfarin and check on my INR every week (I have a personal device that I can take on my trips). Parts of my travel were on train, boat, ship and others by plane. I did not sleep in any of my flights. I walked every 45 minutes in all my flights and even when I average 5 hours walking every day I did not have any pain. I just want to give a little hope to everyone out there. Your tr... read more

Advice Sought for New DVT Patient

First, this site is awesome, and a wonderful way to share
ideas/thoughts/encouragement to those of us that have suddenly stepped through a
big scary door into this new DVT world.

Second, I've been diagnosed within the last 48 hours with DVT (after a long-haul flight
back from the US). My DVT is in the right calf, I've been started on Heparin and
Warfarin within days of the flight back, I am in a good hospital with a doctor who sees
30-50 of these cases a year (lots of long-haul travellers get this I understand) and
while I have significant pain in the calf, I can hobble around for 20-30 minutes. Once
I elevate my leg, the pain subsides to a dull, very manageable ache.

QUESTION: For those that have had similar symptoms (i.e. not necessarily upper leg
DVT or PE), I'd be very appreciative to hear how recovery went, understanding that all
bodies are different, of course and that this can always rapidly change. Did anyone
experience a "full" recovery, ... read more

Allergic reactions to Coumadin

Are there people out there who have had allergic reactions to Coumadin? What was your reaction and what changes took place with your treatment?

I posted early in the month, thinking that I might have been bitten by some kind of insect, but was not sure. My foot turned bright red and was itchy; however there was no real puncture spot from a bug bite. Ten days later, I still had swelling and redness. My doctor put me on antihistamines.

Since then, I have noticed three red areas on my stomach and thigh when I got out of the shower. At first glance, they appeared to be possible bug bites, but that did not make sense with my environment, dress style and habits.

This morning, I awoke to what appears to be hives on both my right and left wrists. I did fax my doctor to let her know what is going on and that I am taking Zyrtek. If I feel my throat swell or anything like that, I will definitely call the ER.

In the meantime, has anybody else gone through this and what was your out... read more

Hip pain

I've posted before..earlier this summer actually. I had DVT from foot to groin and looped into the top of my thigh on the other leg. They said there was residual clot left, and I have my 3 month check up in 2 weeks. Lately, I've been getting hip pain..nothing too bad, but definitely enough to make me a little paranoid. There's also a vein that's popping out right under my hip bone. I wear compression stockings, I take warafin and all of the regular things.

Anyone experienced this? Or have any idea what it might be from?

thanks!

Hello, I had a PE 14 days after my daughter was born, she is now 7 months and I have finished warfarin. I could possible be pregnant again and i'm worried about further DVT's, and the risks so soon after the first clot. Has anyone else who had a pregnancy related DVT had a child soon after?

Thanks Roz

PE with no symptoms?

Having been diagnosed with a dvt 4 weeks after presenting with symptoms, is it possible that some of the blood clot could have broken away during that time and is elsewhere in my body even though I haven't experienced symptoms associated with a PE? Is there a test to see if this has happened?

I have only had a scan from my groin to my knee on my right leg and am currently taking warfarin (last INR was 2.2). Am experiencing slightly swollen right leg with the red/purple colouring but lots of twinges and pains especially in my left (non dvt) leg. Is this normal?

I am 6 weeks into taking medication.

Aspirin to treat DVT?

A DVT was discovered in my right calf this week. It was apparently found in an early
stage, and my doc (fill-in for my regular doc who is on vaca) said, "take one regular
aspirin a day". I felt his approach quite nonchalant but nevertheless followed his
instructions. I have read about the typical treatment w/ blood thinners, and my sister
and mom both suffered DVTs in the past. After two days the majority of the pain in
my calf has subsided, but I can still feel the clot - some tingling, etc. I will be seeing
my doc in 1-1/2 weeks and plan to pursue this to ensure all is well - clot is dissolved
or controlled, no PE, etc. I am 40, and had been taking Ocella (generic for Yasmin) to
control terrible PMS/mood swings. No more BCP's for me. :-( BTW, I have been
tested for Leiden V and the other proteins and all came back normal. Has anyone on
this forum heard of treating DVTs w/ Aspirin??? Thx.

Hi Everyone,
I am on warfarin treatment after my second episode of DVT 3 months back .But in last few days my INR which was at 2.20 with the dose of 7 mg of warfarin has fall down to 1 while dose of warfarin is increased to 20 mg along with low molecular weight heparin injections so the inr increased to 1.43.So can some one provide me guidance what i should do next?Is this dose not a high dose? How long should i take injections? As the doctor is still suggecting me to continue injections & 20 mg dose of warfarin.
