My Story of DVT/PE from a Broken Ankle

My Story of DVT/PE - I was seriously injured when I slipped and fell in Upland, California on March 8, 2008, while visiting there from my home in Arizona. I was rushed to the emergency room (ER) of the nearest hospital where the ER doctor diagnosed fractures of my left tibia and fibula in my lower left leg. (left ankle bimalleolar fracture). I was in a great deal of pain, and was told that the fractures needed open reduction internal fixation surgical repair. However, the doctor only prescribed a pain killer, put a cast on my leg, and told me to follow up with my primary care physician when I returned to Arizona.

The next day, my wife and I drove back to Arizona, which turned out to be an extremely uncomfortable trip because of excruciating pain. The following day, I went to my primary care doctor who immediately referred me to an orthopedic specialist. The orthopedic doctor examined me and stated that surgery could not be performed right away, due to the delay in treatment and ... read more

Children and Factor V Leiden...

Hi there, my son is 20mths old and was born with a malformed thumb. We have recently
had him to see a plastic surgeon following a referral from an orthopedic surgeon. The
doctor asked lots of medical questions obviously re my son, and also some about me. I
informed him that my son had a heart murmor, which he didnt really think was much, but
when I informed him that I had Factor V Leiden they immediately drew up a letter for him
to see a haemotologist for blood test. Aparently, this problem with his finger could be a
side effect of something else that may be wrong with his blood. Is there any possibility
that he could have the Factor V like me, and if so, what might this mean for him in terms
of meds ect... Thanks

Hair condition

I know there is a long thread about hair loss on warfarin - I am losing hair every day but thankfully it was very thick to start with - but has anyone else noticed their hair is now in really bad condition?

My hair feels like straw, no matter how many conditioning treatments I use, and every day it gets so tangly and hurts to brush it, and when I do a load of hair comes out anyway..I was growing it but it's so horrible now i'm tempted to have it cut into a long bob again :(

I was on 6mg a day and INR was stable for about a month but am now on a higher dose every other day as my INR has dipped to 1.4 (target 2.5).

8 Months after DVT and new pain

I had a DVT 8 months ago, which is now chronic. My doctor said to stop Coumadin (which I did about 6 weeks ago). I now take an aspirin every day. This week I have noticed a familiar pain/ache in my DVT leg which eases when I have my stocking on. My leg is not red or swollen more than usual. I did do a lot of walking last week. I try to remember if I had these aches before, but every little thing makes me wonder. Do you think this is normal? I know I should expect some pain/discomfort, but I'm just not sure. Thank you.

Who has been pregnant after a DVT?

Hello...I have a question regarding pregnancy after a DVT. My Dr. found a DVT in my leg when I was 26 weeks pregnant with my 2nd baby. She is now 2 years old and we're thinking of having another baby. My DVT has "disolved" if you will ... it's a non-issue at this point. I only take 1 asprin daily, nothing else.
Anyone know the chances of a re-accurance? I would start taking Lovenox immediatly after becoming pregnant and I know the chances of getting a DVT on blood thinner is not high, but I'm still stressing out. Any advice or experiences would be appreciated.
Thank you!

Leg discolouration

I had my DVT 2 months ago. The pain and swelling eased within 2 weeks or so. However, when I take the stockings off to shower or to give my legs a breather the DVT leg still goes a darker shade than the other. I'm on a daily injection of LMW heparin as I am 34 and a half weeks pregnant. I would really hate to think that my leg is always going to be like this. Will this discolouration eventually go away?? Unfortunately for me, my risk factors are still there (the pregnancy) and its quite difficult to do any substantial exercise. The leg does get achey when I sit for too long so I do try and waddle around as much as I can. So a few questions-
1- How long does it take for discolouration to go away (if at all)
2- Is it ok to take baths? (just something Ive been wondering)

Any help or advice is appreciated

Warfarin headaches

This is by far the worst side effect for me, the low grade headaches. Does
anyone take anything for them ? My dr said Tylenol was fine but I only ever take
one, not everyday but occasionally. Someone told me yesterday that it takes
your body a month to get used to the warfarin then the side effects settle down.
I hope so cos I'm almost at that point( on Friday).

Has anyone had under arm discomfort whilst on warfarin ? I had a dvt 3 weeks
ago & have had some side effects such as weight loss due to loss of appetite,
feeling cold, feeling hot , headaches etc but occasionally I get discomfort under
my armpit, I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this ? I'm on
warfarin for 3 months & my ct scan was clear .

How much water ?

How much water should we be drinking to stay hydrated ? I drink around 96 fl
oz within a 24 hr period ( I have a big 32 oz weight watchers cup), I find that if I
drink plenty it keeps the horrible low grade warfarin headaches at bay, but I'm
also aware that drinking too much can be bad for you aswell.
Any ideas ?

Has anyone switched from warfarin to coumadin

I was just wondering if anyone has asked their dr to switch from warfarin to
coumadin and did it make a difference, I've only been on it 3 weeks but was on
coumadin in hospital for 3 days with lovenox shots that were continued for a
week when I left, I don't recall feeling dizzy, weak, no energy, headachey etc on
coumadin but maybe it would have taken longer to get into my system ?
Any ideas would be gratefully received.

do they test for clotting disorders when admit

I was just wondering if the huge amounts of blood they drew from me when I was admitted to the ER over 3 weeks ago with a dvt ( nothing shoed on lungs from CT scan) from popiteal to femoral veins due to long haul flights a few week prior, were to check for any kind of clotting disorder, there's no family history of this and the Dr seemed pretty certain that it was from the flights t UK & back to US, there were some bloods that they drew that they packed in ice, I had so much going on with everything, that I never asked them.

What compression is best for a dvt?

After a dvt, what compression is best for recovery? Is 15-20mmg enough, or should it be 20-30mmg? Also, can anyone reccomend a brand of compression hose that actually match my skin color?! I am a very pale girl, and the tan color usually ends up looking unaturally dark, while the lighter ones tend to make me look kinda peachy. In general I hate wearing these fugly things, but my legs feel a whole lot better when I do.

I have sweeling in my right ankle and calf but I dont have any pain in either.I had a total hip replacement 6 weeks ago.And was on coumadin since the day after my surgery.I went in for a checkup at 4 weeks with the surgen. At that time he wanted to have my leg checked because my calf was still swelled more than he thought it should be.When they did the untrasound the found I had a DVT.I dont know where it was or is as they never told me that.In fact I thought the swelling was normal and would never thought any thing was wrong. They started giving me levonox shots every day for a week and keeped the coumadin up.Well after a few days the swelling in my leg had gone down. And now it realy looks good and the only time it swells at all is if Iam on my feet alot. But it has never hurt and I was wondering if any one else has had the same. Most every one has pain with the swelling. And they wear compression socks to stop the swelling cause it hurts when it swells.I am wondering if there is much t... read more
