I've been on warfarin for almost a month, I've had the loss of appetite, food tasting different, tingling, aches & pains, but the headaches are horrible grumbling things, usually on my right(dvt) side. I take 500mg Tylenol sometimes for them as my Dr said this was fine, but I don't like to. How does anyone else cope with them ? |

Had second major DVT this January. 1st one was a year or two ago. Doc says I will need to stay on Coumadin indefinitely. I am an active on the go person. I have constant swelling in right leg and am on me feet most of the day. In the past 2 weeks I have been given a knee hi compression stocking 20/30, but I now get edema above the band on the stocking. Second DVT was ankle to Groin. Has anyone been able to come off blood thinners and have swelling subside and get back to easier routien. Did not want to say normal because with DVT there is no normal. I am careful about not getting cut but I get some really severe looking bruising. INR is 2.4 to 2.8 on regular checks every 3 to 4 weeks. Doc says because of DVT I have developed Venious insufficency.(Shitty return circulation I guess) I have dark skin areas on lower leg shin mostly. Anyone have ideas how i can brighten or improve my outlook on this mess. |

Come off warfarin next week after being on for 15mths. I have been told i can only fly if i learn how to self adminster heparin and inject 2 hrs before each flight i take.Is there anyone else out there that has to take heparin to be able to fly? is it safe? How do you go on at the airport with your injections?getting them through customs? How do you have to present them? is there a room available? or do you do it in the toilets? Its just about getting my head around it all. |

High INR and UTI??

Apologies for the "personal" nature of this post, be warned! So, I am studying abroad here in Spain, after suffering DVT in my left leg at the end of May 2009 due to MTS and FVLeiden. I will be taking Coumadin now or a year, increased from 6 months, due to the fact that I am abroad. Since I have been here, my blood levels have been high. My diet has not changed drastically, nor have I been consuming a lot of alcohol. Not every night and when I do, I rarely have more than one. Plus, in Spain, you can order "cortos" which are tiny little beers. Anyways, last night, I noticed that there was blood in my urine, that coupled with the fact that my back had been hurting for about a week (I thought maybe a pulled muscle) led me to head straight to the hospital thinking I was bleeding internally from my kidneys. My INR was 7.02, so they put me on an IV drip of Vit K which brought me back down to 2.4 within two hours. As for the blood in my urine, they said I have a UTI and ... read more |

I had to be taken off Lovenox last week because my liver enzymes continued to elevate. Put on Arixtra until INR gets back to 2-3 range. If it helps anyone else although its rare...make sure your doctor checks your liver enzymes while on Lovenox. Within a few days my levels have come back down to normal range. |

I was diagnosed with a DVT three years ago and also found out at that time that I had Diabetes. I was put in the hospital for five days and and given Lovenox which I stayed on for three weeks. Then coumadin for life when they found out that I had no vena cava. My other veins take up the slack and are larger than normal. I also have a family history of DVT's. This past summer I took a trip to Japan still taking 7mg of Coumadin per day. Both of my feet swelled while I was there. I was having my INR checked at the hospital every week - a big cost of time! The first week I was checked I showed my swelling right leg to the doctor he was not interested?? I am now grateful because I did not want my stay in japan ruined by a hospital stay in japan! But my legs would swell every day. I would sleep with one or both legs elevated most nights. I went to the doctor when I got back and had a one night stay in the hospital after the ultra sound found an extensive clot in the ... read more |

'S' Stands For Surprise: Anticoagulant Plays Unexpected Role In Maintaining Circulatory Integrity ScienceDaily (Sep. 3, 2009) — Protein S, a well-known anticoagulant protein, keeps the blood flowing in more than one way, discovered researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. The protein contributes to the formation and function of healthy blood vessels. The researchers found that mice lacking protein S suffered massive blood clots, but also had defective blood vessels that allow blood cells to leak into the surrounding tissue. "We had anticipated finding clotting problems, but the prominent role of protein S in the development and maintenance of blood vessels was completely unexpected," says first author Tal Burstyn-Cohen, Ph.D., a former post-doc in the Molecular Neurobiology Laboratory and now at the Department of Ophthalmology, Hadassah Medical Center, Jerusalem, Israel. There are more than 200 known human mutations and polymorphisms in the gene coding f... read more |

Dear Forum, Just a quick bit of advice with reference to the dreaded dentist and extraction of a tooth whilst on warfarin. Had severe toothache for a while until it became unbearable and then i had to bite the bullet and had to visit as it was an abscess. Phoned up and explained my scenario with warfarin and INR and he was keen for me to test my INR prior to the surgical procedure. I have the coaguchek XS machine and tested in the dentists seat and it came back as 2.6, He said this was fine as he wont do dental procedures if the INR is above 3.5. I was anxious as i was thinking "I am going to bleed to death" as i feel that is what most of us do think!! The tooth was pulled out and the socket stitched also as this will help clotting and aid the healing process, It was a relatively painless experience and i now have no hesitation to visit on warfarin. I had some bleeding overnight but nothing as major as i had imagined. Hope this can be of help to the many on here. Be S... read more |

Protein/meat intake and warfarin dose

Hi everyone, I have been trying to figure out why my INR has just dropped from a steady number for over a month (between 2 and 3), and then suddenly plummeted to 1.4 - increasing only to 1.5 after a week on a higher dose. I was trying to think, what have I done differently? Then I realised the only thing is that I was a vegetarian when I was diagnosed and I recently started eating meat again (not sure why, think I was so hungry one day I lost the plot!). So my question is, could eating meat have a negative effect of the anticoagulating effect of my warfarin? Maybe if I was always a meat eater I would have had a higher dose all along, but I was stable at 6mg/day as a vegetarian. I've gradually gone veggie again this week, as it suits me better anyway, so we shall see what tomorrow's INR test brings. Been on 7.5mg/day for a couple of weeks now. Can't think of any other reason, had a course of antibiotics but INR stayed stable for a couple of weeks after i'd finished the course. |

I have had two DVTs now. Was on Coumadin for 6 months and within 8 months had much more severe clot ankle to groin+. I have been on Coumadin now 3 months and have severe swelling in leg ankle to thigh, and they check again for new clots. Have vein issues and was given support hose Knee high. Now swelling is pushed to above knee. If I wear tube sock over hose i still get pitting from them. Not as bad with out the hose. Only 47 and don't wish for 3rd DVT or PE. Question is if blood is being pushed up to knee and that is where clots really started what is the good. Swelling above knee. What are my choices/options |

Hi I am a warfarin 'lifer' after suffering an extensive DVT whilst pregnant a year ago. I take 7mg warfarin/day to keep my INR around 2.3-2.5. I'd like to use other supplements to keep my INR up whilst reducing my warfarin. I'm aware that both Pycnogenol and Glucosamine are reported as raising INR 'naturally'. Has anyone out there experimented with taking either of these whilst on warfarin? If so, I would love to hear how you got on; what effects it had on your INR; if you had to reduce your warfarin dose etc. I am self-monitoring and would ideally like to get to a position where I could take less warfarin and still keep my INR within the right range. Take care everyone Louise (UK) |

Hi I had a dvt 3 weeks ago after 2 long haul flights in 10 days to UK & back to FL, I had a cat scan that showed my lungs were clear but I'm so worried that the clot may still move although mr Dr thinks it unlikely. I'm on 5mg warfarin 5 days then 7.5 for 2 until they get it stabilized, I was on lovenox sub cu shots for 10 days , I've been off those for 10 days now( still got some bruising). I cant recommend compression stockings high enough, as my pain & swelling has reduced greatly since wearing it. |

I got my DVT 10 weeks ago when 25 weeks pregnant. The swelling and pain subsided after around 2 weeks. I am now nearly 36 weeks pregnant and for the last few days my DVT leg has swelled again. Its not painful or anything but is definitely bigger than the non DVT leg. I am on a high dose of low molecular weight heparin and am having my bloods monitored very closely. Obviously I am heavier now and there is much more pressure on my legs. Its quite frustrating. I really want to give my leg the best chance of recovery. I have worn the stockings religiously although have since discovered that the hospital TEDS stockings arent the best. Should I be worried that the swelling has come back or do you think that being heavily pregnant is most likely the cause. Is there any other ladies out there who had DVTs while pregnant who experienced this. At this stage I really feel the pregnancy is preventing my leg from recovering. I just want to give my leg the best chance of recovery I can but thats... read more |

Hi, I am fairly new to this all. My hubby got gastro and after vomiting for a few hours developed leg pain and then later that day chest pain. We went to the doctor just to get him some meds so he could keep fluid down at least (thinking he was dehydrated) and the doctor luckily checked his knee and sent us direct to the hospital. 36 hours and lots of tests later and they have discovered a blood clot in his leg part of which has broken off and gotten lodged in his lower lung. Hospital is still concerned as the pain is gradually moving higher in his chest. He's a healthy guy, never smokes, rarely drinks and tends to eat whatever I cook (which I try to keep healthy). Is there anything I can do at home cooking wise that can help him with this and not cause additional problems? Any foods I should introduce or cut out? Currently he is in hospital on warfarin, he's been told when he is released he will be on tablets for at least three months. Currently the doctors are trying to w... read more |

Hi all, as im sure most of you are aware, DVT's are sometinmes caused by the use of the combined contraceptive Pill. But having read over many of the posts, it is very worrying to see that most of the posts i have read concerning women and DVT, they all seem to have been taking Yasmin. Im wondering is there something different about this Pill compared to the others that are on the market. How many of you ladies out there have experienced DVT following the use of Yasmin?? |
