I have been taking warfarin for 13 weeks now and for the past 6 weeks have been in range between 2.0 and 3.0. On Monday my INR dropped to 1.4. I haven't missed any doses, changed my diet or taken any other medication. The clinic doctor was stumped and upped my dosage to 11mg on Monday and 9mg yesterday. Went for another check this morning and my INR was 1.6. Now he has upped my dosage to 12mg tonight and tomorrow, 8mg on Friday and 9mg Sat/Sun and another check on Monday. I am a little concerned about how much warfarin he has asked me to take and also about why my INR has suddenly dropped so low. Has anybody else experienced this during their treatment? |

This website is so helpful but I still need some answers if anyone can help, I had a DVT behind my right knee 7 weeks ago along with 3 blood transfusions anyway first of all my INR started at 1.2 then went along at 2.3 for a while so I then had to go in 2 weeks rather than every week to get blood tests so I went last week and to my horror it had dropped to 1.7 I am a little worried about this or can anyone tell me Im I being silly or can this be quite normal they have upped my warfrin to 5mg then 6mg on alternative days. The next question is to how long does the swelling take to go down on my leg is about 3 inches bigger than my other leg or will it stay like this for good, I have also noticed that my leg is slightly a different colour again is this an after effect of DVT. Now this is a real question for the girlies out there when having a night out are you able to go out without these surgical stockings on and hopefully put on a pair of heeled shoes more so with Xmas arriving soo... read more |

Its been five years since i developed a left lef calf dvt and a right groin dvt. Was treated with warfarin for 6 months then treatment finished I was told i wouldnt need any more treatment and should be fine and they didnt even do an ultrasound scan Moreorless the whole time, ive had a lot of pain and swelling in both legs, and dreadful discolouration in my feet. Ive now got vascular excema dots all round my purple feet My GP didnt take my concerns seriously but i pestered him enough that after about 18mths, he refered me back to vascular surgery They immediately said, oh its post thrombotic syndrome and we cant do much about it. Come back in 6 mths After my symptoms became much worse, the next time i went they done a duplex scan. They found ive developed more clots in my main leg vein and was having trouble pumping blood back up my leg as there are some valves damaged in my main vein So i was surprised when they told me it was chronic dvt and there would be no med... read more |

I'm just wondering if anyone has found a cheaper place to get Coumadin, I cannot take Warfarin ( which was dirt cheap, $10.00 for a 90 day supply) sighs.. My Coumadin, however, is $60.00 per prescription with insurance. |

Vascular Surgery - Remove DVT

Hi, I have been under the care of a hematologist for 2 years for a blood clot running from my groin to my calf. I take ten/mg of coumadin a day. I would like to rid myself of this clot --- there has not been any change since I've gotten it -- multiple ultrasounds show no change. I've been doing some research and saw there is a procedure where a vascular surgeon can remove the clot. Has anyone out there done this or discussed it with their doctor. I am wondering why my hematologist has never brought this up --my hematologist basically told me there isn't any other option and that my body had to break the clot down on it's own --- which it clearly has not done. I appreciate any thoughts anyone has on this topic. I am thinking of going to my primary care to get a referral to discuss my case w/ a vascular surgeon. Thanks! |

Data & Recommendations for DVT/treatment

Peer-reviewed journals! The good stuff. My hematologist turned me on to the current recommendations for doctors in treating DVT, and I was shocked, given our normal experience, that this is available in full text format without a subscription. The current recommendations can be found in CHEST's (American College of Chest Physicians, specializing in multiple disciplines) June 2008 issue. Apparently updated about every 3 years, so this info is still good for about a year. You can find all related articles here: http://chestjournal.chestpubs.org/content/133/6_suppl You will find the meat of the information just under the executive summary titled "Antithrombotic and Thrombolytic Therapy: American College of Chest Physicians Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guidelines (8th Edition)," but you will also notice a lot of available information on participating doctors (very internatio... read more |

I haven't been on this site in a while, so sorry about that as I make it a point to give back where I can. I have seen a few comments on flying so I will share my knowledge. I had a left leg DVT and bi lateral PE's in Dec 08 (very scary time in my life as it was for many on this site - I was 39 male and extremely active). My condition was never fully diagnosed however I fly internationally alot - many times in coach...so that is my smoking gun, I am sure of it. Anyway, I am happy to report being 1 year warfarin free this past July. I still travel a lot internationally (just got back from an overseas flight a few weeks ago). Here is what I do differently now: 1) I demanded my doctor write me a perscription for Lovenox (low dose) shots that I take prior to my flight. It thins the blood quickly and lasts for 12 hours. I usually take another in flight as I am flying longer than 12 hours (always fun in the airplane toilet). It is expensive, but if your insurance can cover some of it you... read more |

What happens if someones job requires sitting at an office after they have a DVT? Is it still safe to sit down daily as long as I get up every hour and walk around or would I have to find something else to do? I also wear a compression stocking and play around with my feet to get the blood flowing when I am sitting. |

Hi All, for those of you that have had your dvts for awhile, I'm curious about your experiences with PTS. I'm 8 months past my initial diagnosis. Lately I've been feeling some slight pain in my vein in the upper/inner thigh. I know this is where my clot was, and I know I have residual clot there as I never had thrombolysis. I had a follow up ultrasound 2 days ago to assess for reflux so I know this is not new clot. The discomfort is usually not too bad, and seems to subside after awhile. Have any of you all felt this as well? Not much swelling, just this vein stuff that I think is happening a little more often than it used to. If anyone cares to describe what PTS is like for them I would be intersted in hearing your stories. Sarah |

Looking for Vitiligo Treatment ???

Vitiligo is a fairly common condition that causes pale, white patches to develop on the skin. This is because that particular area of skin has little or none of a type of pigment called melanin. Any area of the skin can be affected by vitiligo, but it is most commonly seen in parts that are exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck and hands. It is more noticeable on people with dark or tanned skin. The condition varies from person to person. In some people only a few small, white patches will appear and progress no further, whereas in others the patches may get bigger and join up across large areas of the skin. There is no way to predict how much of the skin will be affected, and the white patches are usually permanent. About 1 in 100 people in the UK develop vitiligo. The condition can occur at any age, but begins before the age of 20 in about half of all cases. Both men and women are equally affected. The exact cause is unclear, however, vitiligo is not infectious an... read more |

Having just had a baby and a very tough pregnancy, I want to wait a good long while before going through it all again. I was told the mirena coil is a safe form of contraception for anyone who has had a DVT. Is there anyone out there who have had one fitted, and if so do you recommend it? Thanks |

Lovenox and fatigue?

I am wondering if others have found fatigue to be a side effect of Lovenox injections? This is my third time doing the Lovenox injections but the other times I stopped at 10 doses/shots. This time I am on about my 14th shot of a 20-shot course and I am SO TIRED. It's not like a sleepy, not enough rest tired, I just want to lie down all the time, almost like having a mild case of the flu. I was wondering if others have experienced this. |

I am 33, had a very active life style, was cycling 40 to 60 miles a day. I went to the ER a few months ago and had 7 PE's, and a DVT in my right leg. I spent some time in the hospital. It took 11.5mg of Coumadin to keep my blood levels above a 2.0. That was all four months ago. Two weeks ago, I went to the ER and another DVT. MY INR level at the time of the DVT was at least a 2.0. I am now taking 14.5mg of Coumadin a day and lovnex shots twice a day in my stomach. my higest level since the lovnex shots started two weeks ago and the raise in Coumadin has been a 2.6. I am very aware about vitamin k and I have a very low vitamin k intake. Has this happened to anyone else? This condition got me medically retired from the Coast Guard after 14 years of service. I am now at home in North Carolina and going to find the best doc through the VA. any help, suggestions anything would help. my email address is DavidMoulton76@gmail.com |

I would like to ask what you think about drinking tea of herbs after deep vein trhrombosis. Should I avoid the consumption of herbs because of the illness or because of warfarin. Do you know if there is any negative reaction?? Some people say that until the clots disappear surely should not take these. What have you heard about it? |

been doing some resurch into alternatives to warfarin as i am so fed up with all the side effects that the doctors choose to tell us dont exist!! like tiredness, hair loss, feeling cold all the time e.t.c....im not talking about herbs and stuff i know that we all have to take warfarin, as the alternative is risking having another clot. but last year a new drug called pradaxa was cleared for use and is allready used in some cases in the uk but only for people who have had knee and hip operations. ive looked at all the studies and trails and none have the same side effects as warfarin exept the usual bleeding bruising etc as with any blood thinner; also there are no daily/weekly blood tests as the way it thins the blood is so diffrent. would really lie to know if any one else has heard of it or has used it?? thanx. x |

Lower Back Pain

I was diagnosed with severe DVT from my Kidneys to my ankles 2 years ago. I was in the hospital for close to a month and had Thrombolysis to dissolve the clots as well as a stent placed in my upper thigh. At the time the DR told me that my inferiror Vena cava was complelty blocked and they were unsuccessful at dissolving the clot and that it must have been at least partially blocked for some time because other veins had grown around it to compensate for the blockage. Over the last week I have dveloped lower back pain to the point that I cannot stand up straight or bend down. I have to walk partially hunched over or the pain is pretty severe. I was just looking and came across an article that said that blockage of the IVC could cause lower back pain but I don't see how I would just develop the pain now after 2 years. Any thoughts?? |
