I'm aware that green tea should be avoided whilst on warfarin but was wondering if fruit teas (obviously excluding cranberry and grapefruit) can be drunk without any interactions? The key ingredient other than fruit seems to be hibiscus and I can't find any record of this causing problems....? |

Pain in leg

Hi, For a while now (a year or so) I have been having intense periodic pain in my right leg. This usually happens once a month or so. The pain feels like it is near the knee/calf region of the leg. Throughout the day when the leg does hurt, the pain gets worse to the point where it hurts a lot to walk on that leg. Painkillers take the pain away as well as rest (if I have the pain at night and go to bed, its gone the next day). Recently, when sitting down, I am noticing either a pulse or muscle twitching in the right leg but I am not sure if that's due to the leg problems are just anxiety thinking about it. Also, sometimes the foot feels warm (actually both feet feel warm) but again, I'm not sure if this is due to the leg problem or just my anxiety. What could this be? I can't get to a doctor until Thanksgiving time so I'm wondering if this is something that I need to address sooner. Does this sound like a possible DVT? Thanks! |

Hi all, Just want to pass on some info I recently found out about the effects of taking Pepto-bismal while on Warfarin. My INR has been fine for weeks then suddenly dropped to 1.6 and 1.7, my Dr kept asking me if I was taking my meds! Couldn't figure out what happened until I realized that I had reflux a couple of times in the past few weeks and had taken Pepto to sooth it. Turns out that if you take Pepto AFTER you've taken Warfarin it just washes it out of your system. Unfortunately my stomach doesn't know this, when it decides to act up while I'm sleeping. Best to just stick to milk to coat my throat, and a nibble of sugar to get ride of the burning. Can't wait until my 6 months are over! Augh!!! |

"People who use arthritis rubs containing methyl salicylate (oil of wintergreen) may also be at risk for this interaction. Products such as Arthritis Formula BenGay, Icy Hot Cream, Mentholatum Deep Heating and Thera-Gesic all contain methyl salicylate." Salicylate is an "aspirin-like drug", which is also found in Pepto-bismal. |

Ok. So I developed a DVT in my left leg- mostly in the calf area and behind my knee in late June 2009. I got the usual treatment with heparin/warfarin and compression stockings as well as bedrest. I was a perfect patient, did exactly what my doctor said. After 90 days, the pain had subsided but I noticed cirulation issues in both of my legs, not just my left leg, but the doctor said this was normal. They did an ultrasound in September, and the clot was gone and my doctor took me off of warfarin. She only advised continued compression stockings/support hose as therapy for my circulation issues. I have added a 81 mg of Asprin per day, hoping this would also help with my circulation- and my doctor said that would be fine. However, I am curious to know if anybody else has had this happen in BOTH legs.... sometimes it is so bad that I am in the bed, resting, all over again. Of course it gets better at night, but then with work or just being up and around- even with compression ... read more |

Been to the ER 4 times in the last month with 2 overnight stays. All due to chest pain, left arm pain, left leg pain and shortness of breath. I see a cardiologist. All EKG's, chest xrays, blood work normal. I complain of my left leg hurting. It especially hurts at rest or trying to sleep. They say your leg pains and chest pains aren't related. I recently had a heart CT scan waiting on results. I had an ultrasound on my left leg 2 months ago normal and had an ultrasound about 5 months ago on both normal. does a DVT cause so much pain at rest? I am 34, no high choles or blood pressure, 5'4", 110 lbs. Had a csection 2 years ago. Do have a desk job and a long commute to work. No swelling, no redness, just horrible left leg pains. Most of the time it is calf area, sometimes on heel, bottom of foot, sometimes in back of my thigh, sometimes behind knee. Pain is not all the time but seems to be worse when laying down or sitting. I do wear compression hose pretty much all the time, take baby... read more |

I have a DVT in the calf area and 3 veins are totally blocked, had this for 3 months now. About a month ago the area around the ankle was swelling and became very painful to walk on, after another scan the DVT is still there and also a Baker's cyst. Has anyone else experienced swelling around the ankle joints and makes walking hell. |

I was diagnosed with DVT in June and blood tests came back positive for Factor V Leiden heterozygous. Both parents got tested and my mother came back positive for Factor V Leiden heterozygous. Her hematologist said that it was no big deal and many people carry this defect without getting a clot. I have recently found out that my 76 year old mother's health is failing. I had a long talk with her yesterday, where she shared more information than usual. Test results also show that the has hyperhomocysteimia (B12 deficiency). She has been dealing with COPD for many years now and was recently diagnosed with congestive heart failure. So now she has many risks factors for DVT, especially because the COPD and CHF are limiting her activity and blood circulation. Just the Factor V and B12 deficiency increase her risk to 20; on top of that she is deficient in folic acid, which further reduces the absorption of B12. She's currently on inhalers for the COPD, blood pressure medication, baby... read more |

Can anyone tell me just how long it takes to be fully recovered from a DVT and fit for work? I developed a DVT in the calf about a week after returning from a holiday flight last month and no-one, not even the doctor can give me an indication of how long I'm going to be off work. I'm a teacher - the only answers I get are - everyone is different, it will be a while yet! |

Can we take vitamins?

I've been on Coumadim for 4 1/2 months now, with a constant dose level for 12 weeks. My INR levels still bounce all over the map (from 1.7 to 6.4), so I have tried to keep my lifestyle and diet stable. This means I am not eating enough fresh vegetables and I am starting to be concerned about good nutrition. Are there any multivitamins out there that would be safe to take? It looks like Flinstone's Childrens Vitamins do not have any vitamin K, so is that an option? If anyone has doctor recommended vitamins, I'd be happy to know what I can take. |

Just went to the ER for exam but found nothing

I wanted to get some info because I went into the ER because my leg has been hurting for 4 days and the pain cam unexpectedly. The pain comes in waves and can be quite bad at times...throbbing. My friend told me it looked a little swollen last night which is why I decided to go to the ER but then I got there... they took blood and tested it and said there is nothing wrong. I thought they were going to do an ultrasound, but I guess they determined by the blood they took that there is no clot. Is that enough to determine? I mean, I don't understand why I would have this pain in my leg for no reason to the point of limping, and there is a vein on my leg which seems to have popped out and you can see it from the outside. So I don't know what to think.I felt better once they told me that, but I still don't know what to make of it. They said to just take Advils until it gets better. |

Why high heart rate

Since I had my dvt my heart rate is always high, never really paid much attention to what it was before, but even doing the simplest of things can make it race. I went to see my hematogist & walking from the parking lot to the office, it was 121, by the time I left it was 102. It's worrying. Does anyone else have this problem? I had a cat scan after my dvt & that was clear. |

Yasmin Birth Control

I know that majority of females on here have been on Yasmin. I find it kind of ironic how many have had clots with this birh control. Have any of you checked into this? I know that the little brochures say that you can have blood clots, stroke, heart attack, etc. BUT I'm beginning to think this drug needs to be checked out and maybe even removed from the market if it's prone to causing clots. I am amazed at the number of users with clots on this board. How many other females has this affected and no one knows about it? Since my case is a legal matter I am bringing this up as well as I feel this needs to be researched a little bit more. If this drug is indeed a culprit it needs to be removed off the market before people are dying from it or have long term damage. I was just wondering if anyone else had questioned it? |

Blood Clots In Lungs Might Not Always...

Blood Clots In Lungs Might Not Always Originate In Deep Veins Of Legs And Pelvis In Trauma Patients ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2009) — Few trauma patients who develop potentially deadly blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism) also have clots in the deep veins of their pelvis and legs (deep venous thrombosis), challenging commonly held beliefs about the association between the two conditions, according to a report in the October issue of Archives of Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. "For decades, it has been taught that pulmonary embolism is a sequel of deep venous thrombosis," the authors write as background information in the article. "Forming in the lower extremity or pelvic veins, clots break off and travel to the pulmonary circulation. Therefore, deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism should coexist in most patients, because part of the clot embolizes [lodges] in the lung, and part remains attached to the vein." George C. Velmahos, M.D., Ph.D., and co... read more |
