hi i got a blood clot about a year ago after i tour all the tendons in my ankle. i cut myself just above the ankle about 8 months ago and they never healed and laity the skin has become vary sensitive. my doctor put me on a diabetic medication to help the circulation in the leg(also the skin started to become vary dry and started pealing like a really bad sunburn) and in the past few weeks it seems to be helping i'm also using bag balm every night but my main issue is that every once in a while i get a really sharp pain in the side of my leg right above the sores, my doctor told me that there is nothing that can be done about that and gave me some pain meds to help but it hits instantly and lasts anywhere from 15 seconds to 2 minutes. it hurts so bad what ever i'm doing i have to stop right away. if i'm driving witch scares me the most i have to pull over right away. its unbearable. i don't believe him that there's nothing that can be done but when i tried to go see another docto... read more |

I thought I would start a new thread on this to try and guage how many of you out there are UK based in order to discuss UK-specific experiences as there seems to be quite a variation in what goes on in the UK, to the US, and maybe other countries. I think part of the differences are clearly due to being in the main treated under the NHS rather than the private sector and this clearly impacts on policy for treatment and follow up. My experience so far (single clot in thigh, no obvious risk factors and no symptoms) is that any follow-up after my 6 month warfarin course, is looking unlikely. Despite there being published research on the merits of repeat d-dimers, risks of recurrence etc, there seems to be no policy to do any follow up following a single DVT episode. I guess I would be interested to know if anyone has had more success than me on discussing future screening with their GP/consultant and any other comments to make about whether the private sector is the way to go ? |

Wondering if anyone else had had a similar experience or can relate to my situation. I have typically been a pretty healthy and active guy, 33 years old. 8 months ago a developed a cluster of superficial clots in my calf and on further investigation they found a DVT from 5cm above my knee to about 15cm below. Lots of tests but they couldn't find a definative cause (although I suspect my varicose veins and a tight knee brace I wore conrtibuted) Anyway 6 months on Warfarin and everything went pretty good, I didnt really have any issues and my specialist was pretty happy with everything so I stopped the warfarin 6 weeks ago. I havent really had any problem and was back to exercising and everything full steam ahead. My right calf is now a little larger than the left but the doc said that was to be expected. I have however again developed a little superficial clot in my ankle and although I know these surface type clots arent dangerous like DVT and despite my specialist telling me... read more |

Ovarian Hyperstimulation induced DVT

Hello to all...I am a 36 yr old lady and suffered a DVT of the left Iliac vessels down to the popliteal vein in June 2009. This was induced by Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome, Fertility drugs, hormones and realtive immobility which I took for IVF treatment and pregnancy (which I miscarried at 11 weeks). I was on Levonox (LMW heparin) and then later switched to Warfarin. On my most recent venogram, my left common iliac vein is still blocked but the rest of the veins further down ie femorals are patent. How long do I have to be on warfarin as I am eager to concieve ASAP, which I cannot while on the drug. I had no other predisposing factor to the DVT such as APS or FavtorV etc. My blood workup was done for this. SOme have told me 6 months but others have said 1 year as the iliac vessel was involved. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanx. |

In July I had a major DVT from my ankle to my groin, my other leg was in plaster due to breaking it several weeks earlier, although they do think clots may run in the family as my mum suffered from them and so did my grans 2 sisters, I am currently being tested. Anyway when this happenend I couldn't move my leg at all and was in agony the GP came over and said it was just muscular pain and to get up and walk on it. Later that night the pain the awful so had to call an ambulance who straight away said it was A DVT. Whilst in hospital I suffered a PE, it was a very scary time. I am now on warafrin but my INR is very unstable and always low, the last couple of days I have been having a lot of pain behind my DVT leg's knee. It is swollen but it is hard to tell if it recent or not as my leg has been swollen since July. Today I spoke to my GP about the pain and he said it was just muscular, my problem is I am worried and not sure if to trust my GP or not after the last time, I would love ... read more |

How long with swelling & Pain?

It is a week since I was diagnosed with a subclavical thrombosis which is affecting my right arm. My GP told me the swelling should only last a couple of days but so far there has been no improvement since my diagnoses & I am also in a fair bit of pain. I know everyone is different but is there an expectation of when an improvement should at least start to happen? My arm is pretty much useless at the moment. Also could you let me know if it is normal or not to see a specialist when you have a DVT? I was diagnosed in the emergency department of the hospital who refered me back to my GP (my GP has on onsite lab so does my INR testing no problem). Under what circumstances would it be normal to see a vascular specialist? Kind Regards, Louise |

I was 23 years old when i had my first DVT, and was on blood thinners for 6 months. I have seen many doctors due to my little sister also getting a DVT the same year. They did the blood tests and showed that everything is normal in our blood for clotting factors. which is hard to believe due to us being so young. The biggest question i have is since they took me off the thinners about a year and half ago i have had on going pain in my groin where the clot was. i have had many ultra sounds and there is no clots forming again, and the doctors are not to worried. The pain is bad when i am sitting, or laying on that leg. standing and laying on the other side is alright. The pain can go from my groin a bit into my stomache and down my leg. Just wondering if anyone else has had these side afects after being taken off the thinners, and what you were told why these pains are there? Its just hard for me to get my mind off wondering if the pain is something i should be paying attenti... read more |

I was just diagnosed 3 days ago with a subclavical thrombosis. I am on Marcoumar (Coumarin)for the next 6 months. I live in Switzerland so winter sports are a big part of our families life. We have our first ski weekend booked for the begining of December. Is it safe to ski or I probably should say to fall? I am not an expert skier more of an intermediate & do wipe out on occasion. Thanks, Louise |

Hi, need advice please although I am pretty sure I know what the answer might be?? I suffered extensive DVT just shy of 6 months ago from Ankle to Groin in my Left Leg. Ever since, I have worn compression stockings to my Groin - religiously! I am on Warfarin although my INR has never been consistent. Theraputic level should be between 2 and 3 like most of us and it's always been up and down. Last test was 1.7 and taking 5 1/2 mgs a day. The last couple of days my leg has been swollen (more than usual) and I am having pains in different places of the left leg all the time. Today I moved my leg kind of suddenly and it felt like I it broke my shin! Of course I didn't but that was how sharp the pain was. I can't see the rest of my leg course of the stocking - but my toes are swollen and are a patchy red. Any suggestions - has anyone else had this? |

Hi there, I have recently returned from a long haul trip- 14 hours, when I arrived at my destination I had very swollen and sore legs which subsided after 3/4 days. I have now returned home and 1 week on am suffering from pain in 1 leg. The pain is in the calf mainly and occasionally the lower thigh. I have no other symptoms other than a weird 'cold' sensation that comes and goes. I have no redness, swelling or tenderness to the touch but I am lying awake worrying about the pain, thinking it is DVT. I have visited the GP who pooh poohed it, but I am concerned as I had minor surgery due to failed pregnancy 1 week before the trip. Should I return to the doctor yet or wait a while and see what happens- very worried and confused :( |
