My 29 yr. old daughter died 6 mts ago from DVT in her iliac vein & apulmonary embolism. She was nine mts. pregnant & her baby died the next day from lack of oxygen.(They took the bay form my daughter's dead body). Her dr. did not listen to her complaints & passed them off to "normal" pregnancy symptoms. She had a lot of pelvis pain & what seemed like muscle cramps in her hip--they passed this off to sciatic nerve. She had a few near fainting spells & rapid pulse & shortness of breath they passed off as normal or the bay pushing on the vena cava. Two days before she died I noticed her left ankle only was swollen. The dr. had seen her that morning & did not notice it. She had a bad cramp in her leg/hip the day she died, collapsed & died within a few minutes. I am thankful her husband was with her & she did not suffer, but we are so devastated she & her beautiful little girl are gone.... |

I had a rather unfortunate run-in with my son's Optimus Prime and cut my foot so badly I should have had stitches (this was in September). I didn't know the cut was THAT bad, I thought I had stopped the bleeding (but then walked around like it was fine and re-opened the wound). I missed the window of time and therefore had to just bandage the wound. Now, I have a rather small scabby looking wound. With what I am reading (about leg ulcers and gangrene), Should I be concerned about this? |

Hello, I just typed a post that used up every bit of space and lost it, so this one is not as detailed. I had 3 cancers, MS, Narcolepsy, Cataplexy, and 15 surgeries. In March my right leg was in so much pain I could not walk. I had a Doppler done and was told I was fine, I must have strained it while exercising. I had colon cancer surgery about a week later, once I was home from that mess, I realized my knee didn't hurt at all. Yay. About a month ago I told my husband, "I am starting to feel that weird pain in my knee again...," but guess what? I was having a gallbladder surgery (plus my ripped belly muscles, multiple hernia repair). I was excited about this surgery, it was supposed to be a new beginning (no reminders about cancer). After surgery, I walked constantly, and asked my nurse for 4 days, "What does a blood clot feel like?" She would respond, "You probably need to stretch that leg." The day I was to be released I saw her watching me intently as I struggled to sit comf... read more |

I had a DVT in my leg last January. I stopped Coumadin the end of July and had another doppler done on my leg which showed a residual clot. I remained off blood thinners. I had several blood panels done including V Leiden, Protein S, Protein C, and several others (total of 9) which all came back normal. I admit I haven't been following doctor's orders to the tee. I hadn't noticed any swelling or achiness in my leg until I went to the doctor last Monday and he measured my leg and it was about 1 inch larger than my normal leg. Now I am paranoid and measuring my leg several times/day. I've also noticed some achiness and crampiness. I have been taking Aspirin and wearing my stocking. How do you get ever get over the paranoia? In your opinion, do you think I should be concerned? |

i had a scope done on my knee on OCt 9th. 6 days later i had an ultrasound bc my calf hurt and a dvt was disovered. less than a month from that i had a follow up ultrasound and the dvt was gone. im still on coumadin and will be until jan. which will be 3 months. my biggest concern is coming off the medication and getting another dvt. My question is bc my dvt was from a surgery what are my chances of getting another one? also does 3 months sound long enough to be on the coumadin? also how tight should my dvt stockings be? im on 18 but i heard i should be on 20-30. one other question is i am flying in april and was wondering if i should get lovenox injections before. how long would you consider a long flight to be? |

New to DVT & Warfarin

I had knee surgery on 10/26. Have been on Yasmin for 2 years and wasn't taken off prior to surgery. I had begun my PT 2 weeks after surgery and removed my mobilizer brace. I had severe pain in my calf for three days and thought it was from PT. But, on the 4th day, when it seemed to get worse behind my knee, I was sent to the hospital and diagnosed with DVT and put on Heparin injections and Warfarin. Now, 10 days later, my INR test was at 1.7 and they've increased my Warfarin. Question: The pain has subsided, but swelling gets real bad. I get very tired easily, cold, and have a difficult time taking a deep breath. I also get excrutiating muscle cramps in the foot of my good let. Is this all normal? |

Could this be DVT?

Hi, I had a baby 8 weeks ago and over the past couple of days have had occassional sharp pains in both legs. This morning I woke up with very tender skin over roughly a hand- sized area of my lower leg (ankle up towards side of calf). It hurts to touch and when I walk. The pain does not seem to be deep but on the surface of my skin. Could this be related to DVT? Everything I've read says 'leg pain' but what sort of leg pain? Thanks for any advice, Jac |

I was curious if you were back to running yet and how it's going for you. I was doing great hitting the gym for a bit, but school and a platar fascitis flare-up set me back a bit. I'm so ready for some long walks again, but I really miss running, I was just making a tiny bit of headway when I had the first clot symptoms. I was curious how it's going for you. |

I have been doing alright on warfarin lately, expected to go off for testing mid to late Jan. I have not experienced being cold (too much body fat), I have lost some hair, no bruising, it took 2.5 months to find a pretty consistent INR but then was good. Need to e between 2-3. I have had some dental work done, the doc said I bled more like someone with gum disease but that was all. Created a few other injuries with no issues. I am also in grad school, and recently finished a project that was all day and night. After 4 night of 5 hrs sleep in a row, I had a night where I got merely 2. The following evening, I got a papercut at the tip of my middle finger, and it bled like I tried to actually cut my finger off. Do you suppose sleep raised my INR to cause such a dramatic reaction? The night following said papercut, both the need to finish the project and the throbbing from my finger caused me to sleep only 1 hr. It is now 5 days and much sleep later, and... read more |

Pregnant with factor 5

I just found out that I am pregnant. I am very concerned about another blood clot. It has only been 6 months since my first blood clot appeared in May. Right when I was just about to stop taking the warfarin I found out I was pregnant. The nurse told me to stop taking the warfarin, but since I have factor 5 leiden I need to take something while I am pregnant. So my question is how soon do you need to start on lovenox shots or something else once you have found out your pregnant? I haven't been to a doctor yet, but my guess is that I am about a month along. Am I waiting too long, are my chances for blood clots high in the first weeks of pregnancy? I would really appreciate any feedback on this subject. Thank you. |

After 2 DVTs and a recent change in my INR I have progressed to thigh high compression stockings on both legs. My INR went fron 2.8 -3.0 to a 1.5 then on follow up test 1.2 back to base line. No diet change just change in activity level. increase in movement. Have had me on Lovinox injection to bridge the gap until INR gets stabilized. Went from 5 mg to 7.5 daily of Wasfarin. Now getting rechecked in about 5 days. Have minor swelling in left leg no pain or DVT and moderate swelling in R leg Post DVT with discoloration. Told venious insuffiency. How long do they keep you in compression stockings. Being an active person, or try to be how can I make these things a little more comfortable. Told to put on before I get outta bed in the morning and take off last thing at night when possible, I have 20-30 comp with the silcone band at the thigh. For now i can deal with the silicone but the hair pulling drives me nuts. Do I have any choices besides the obvious one. I hope the lad... read more |

Ultrasound - Do I have a new clot?

I'm nearing the end of a six month course of Coumadin and had a doppler ultrasound on Friday. My doctor called me today with the results. The clot in the popliteal vein has cleared. She said that I have a small clot in the posterior tibial vein. I asked her if this was a new clot, because the original clots were diagnosed as follows (directly from the radiologist's report): "There is echogenic material in the distal right polpliteal vein and throughtout the peroneal vein in the calf. These veins are noncompressible, compatible with deep venous thrombosis. There is compressibility and venous phasicty in the right common femoral vein, superficial femoral vein, and posterior tibial vein." I know that the peroneal veins and posterior tibial veins branch off one anther, but the initial report seems to suggest that this may be a new clot. My doctor was unable to answer my question while we were on the phone, so I faxed her when I got home from work today to consult the radiologis... read more |

Yonight i am in a state of panic! Coming off warfarin in 2 weeks time, really nervous. I feel as if i need to know whats going on with my leg, why dont they re scan when it could save all this anxiety and worry. Told my doc that i will pay to go private but all he says is that ive had enough treatment, (6 months), and it wouldnt make any difference as they wouldnt keep me on it any longer. Anyone have any ideas what i shhould do? Or am i stressing unnecessary? |

New evidence links inflammation to venous disease. As you know DVT is a multi causal disease. Until recently, DVT was thought to be solely a blood or vascular disorder. Now, scientists from the University of Michigan Medical School have discovered intriguing new evidence to support the idea that the development of blood clots in veins – just like blocked arteries in atherosclerosis – is an inflammatory process. "When a blood clot develops in superficial veins of the leg – a condition called phlebitis – the redness and swelling associated with inflammation are visible," says Thomas W. Wakefield, M.D., a scientist and vascular surgeon in the U-M’s Cardiovascular Center. "When a clot forms deep inside the leg, these signs are hidden, so physicians have rarely associated DVTs with inflammation." Stop eating processed and fried foods and you'll restore the body's natural defenses, study finds Thursday, November 26, 2009 by: S. L. Baker, features writer There's a dru... read more |

Pulmonary thromboembolism

As pulmonary embolism causes pulmonary blood vessels get blocked by clots, the amount of oxygen that reaches into blood is decreased. My question is that besides of fatigue and shortness of breath, could this deficit of oxygen cause some other physiological and psychological problems? For example, bad memory or brain-damage? Thank you. |

I had a dvt in my groin just over 2months ago. The affected leg is still significantly swollen (- about 3inches bigger in circumference around my thigh than the other leg) and i have aching pains and tenderness in the leg every day. It is a little different in colour to the other leg but no worse than it has ever been post diagnosis. I would like to know how long it typically takes for the swelling to go down, or if it is likely to be permanent? |
