INR + Alcohol

Hey there-- Let me put it out there that I am not a big drinker, usually when I drink, it's socially, and maybe have a couple of glasses of wine a month...but it's sporadic...and not at all consistent which is what seems to be necessary to maintain a stable INR. I am down to getting blood draws every 2 weeks and don't have my next draw until July 13th. Last time I went it was low at 1.7 (June 18) I was told to limit my alcohol consumption to 1-2 glasses a night...I feel like that's a lot! Anyways, tonight I had about three glasses of wine, not MONDO sized but still, three. It was probably a poor decision, and now I am nervous about it!! I just an not really sure yet how quickly things can affect Coumadin. My dose just got up'ed, and I accidentally switched a full dose day with a half dose, which means I've taken 3 full doses (5 mg each) in hour days. (It used to be that I only took this full doses on Monday and Friday) Anyways. Kind of nervous about it. I ... read more |

On wafarin due to blood clotting. Got out of hospital asked my doctor if I am able to go to my girls night out party at the bar. The doctor told me it would be fine to do that.My family freaked and wants me to not have any alcohol. Any remarks on what anyone else was told. My family thinks my doctor is out of his mind to tell me that it would be fine. |

I am 33 years old, was taking contraceptive pill and am diabetic. Apart from that, was completely healthy and active. I developed a bad pain in my leg which continued to large amount of swelling. After an ultrasound I was diagnosed as having extensive below and above knee dvt with one at groin. This was last week. Since then I am injecting 0.55 Heparin and taking 5mg warfarin. I feel no pain when lying down or sitting very still, but in agony when i stand or walk even a few feet. I understand everyone is different, but what can I expect? Will the pain subside soon, how long will the swelling take to go, will i be able to walk again soon? Is there hope of full recovery from this? Any advice appreciated |

Fluctuating INR

Hi all. I am looking for some input on regulating Coumadin. After a number of shoulder surgeries (13), including 3 botched joint replacements, I developed a large DVT from the subclavian vein, extending into the brachial, axillary, and basilic veins with 100% occlusion. It developed over a long period of time and I fortunately developed significant collateral circulation. Following 2 angioplasty surgeries in 2 days, I was weaned off of heparin and on to Coumadin. Following my discharge from the hospital, my general practitioner was tasked with regulating my Coumadin level. My dose had not been regulated, yet he only wanted to check my INR every 6 weeks or so. I objected, and got him to test weekly. In the past 3 months I have only been in the target range with my INR one time. The doctor keeps changing my dose from 2.5 to 7.5, and everything in between. Last week I became very ill feeling, and found my INR to be over 6.0. The previous week it was 1.3. The wild fluctuat... read more |

Hi All, After 18 months suffering DVT's it is very comforting to come across this forum. In a nutshell, I developed a DVT from my right ankle to just below my navel 4 weeks after a somewhat botched angiogram. I was immediately anticoagulated with Clexance injections and Warfrin. Four weeks of injections and that was it other than trying to keep my INR betwwen 2.5 and 3.5. 8 weeks ago I went for a doppler to confirm no residual DVT and to come off Warfrin...at last. Unfortunately things didnt go so well. I have residual clot in the popiteal....then the fun starts. Iliac right and left leg completely occluded right through to above the liver including renal veins. The thing is the extent of this clot has never been identified with previous dopplers and other ultrasounds completed and yet the vascular surgeon says there is no way to identify this as a "warfrin fail". Thank God for the superficial collateral veins otherwise I would be in a bit more strife! The thing is, they... read more |

Genetic Testing for hyperclotting?

I was diagnosed with a small clot in my left leg a month ago. At the time of diagnosis the doctor asked me the regular questions: do you smoke? do you use birth control pills? have you been inactive for a while? etc. Most of the answers to these questions were "no", so the doctor asked if there was any history of clotting in my family. I said yes, both my mom and sister had clotting issues (my mom died of a pulmonary embolism and my sister had a stroke that paralyzed the right side of her body). My doctor says he wants to do some genetic testing to verify hyperclotting running in the family. Have you or any member of your family have been tested for it? If so, what should I expect in terms of testing? If the test(s) come back positive, what was the treatment that your doctor ordered? |

6 month follow up sonogram showed DVT is gone

Now that the DVT is gone ( it was in my right calf) what is the next step? I am going to the pro time clinic to check inr level next week. Once I tell them the results of the sonogram are they going to take me off of coumadin? At first, I was so afraid to be on it but now I feel as though it's my lifeline. Keeping me safe from blood clots. Will they tell me to stop at once or wean me off?? This has been a very traumatic experience for me and I started taking Zoloft for anxiety (panic attacks) and depression. I am happy the blood clot is gone but what now? I know I am not alone and I wish everyone here a speedy recovery and good health . Thank you in advance for your comments. |

I bought 1 pair of the Mediven Pluses... I've been working out only 3-4 days a week, so I've staggered the wearing and the washing the two on my affected leg over the week. I clearly need another pair to step up the workouts and not have to kill myself with laundry. I've been washing gentle cold, air drying, etc. When you spend in the 55-70 dollar range (Medivan, Jobst, or similar) for a pair, about how long do they last? Do you notice any difference between toe and toeless when it comes to your comfort doing a lot of walking, esp. when you are wearing socks over your stocking? I need petite length, so I can't do the socks or other options I might otherwise pursue for working out, they just aren't small enough. And ladies, I have nails and I'm not giving them up.. so far I haven't needed to. But are the sheer ones different- is there a greater risk of sticking a fingernail through one? Much thanks, I have to weigh whether I just get one more pair or t... read more |

Other Warfarin Affects

All: Decided to start a new post even though there are others with Warfarin Side Affects. Thought it might be helpful to get "fresh". I have been on Warfarin for 6 months now for a massive DVT in my left leg, ankle to upper thigh. I live in Minnesota where, as many of you know, it gets a little cold. I have noticed over the last couple or few months that both legs are now showing discoloration (pink to red to purple) when I stand without moving for any length of time. At first this was only with the affected leg, but has now moved to the good (right) leg. This has seemed to develop as a worse condition as the weather as gotten colder and I've been wondering if it's a combination of cold weather and the Warfarin. Another note: I walk for an hour or so daily always outside which as been tough as the tempatures have dropped to sub-zero, and that also seems to bother both legs. Any thoughts or ideas from the community? |

Pinching feeling infront of knee

Hello everyone, I was diganosed with a small blood clot in my left leg about a month ago. I've been in warfarin ever since and feeling all kinds of funny things (the fluttering, a mild pain that only lasts 1 min. and it goes away, etc). Today I woke up with a pinching feeling in my right knee, but it is in the front, not in the back. Could that be another clot? I only feel it when I flex the knee or when I walk, and it is very localized. I was wondering if someone had that kind of pinching pain too. Thank you all in advance! |

I have recently been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis. After a two-week spell in hospital, I was prescribed aspirin and simvastatins twice a day. I have since been informed that this is a lifethreatening condition and I should be taking warfarin or the equivalent. I need some advice! |

Hello All, First I am very grateful to have found this forum. I was diagnosed 10 days ago with an extensive thrombosis, groin to mid-calf, left side. No discoloration, minor swelling and now very little pain (had a lot of pain for several days before diagnosis). I have several questions: Is it okay to exercise (I like to do brisk walking several times a week). What about sexual activity? Any chance to exacerbate my condition? How much alcohol (if any) is acceptable? Finally, I'm taking coudamin and still adjusting the levels but in the meantime, I'd like to start some alternative treatments (natto, butcher's broom, homeopathic remedies, etc). Does anyone know if this is a bad or good idea? Should I only be taking the coudamin or is it okay to begin some alternative treatments? Thanks so much for your help! |

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar sensation. The first night of taking warf I could feel my DVT making a fluttering sensation that was on and off for several hours. I imagined that it was the warf marching in there and working on the clot, I asked the doctor about it he just laughed. Anyone else felt this? |

Hello everybody. I'm from Lebanon so i don't know English well. From time to time i feel like i can't breath especially when i'm in bed and my heart starts beating so fast. I've been feeling pain in both legs for about two weeks...in the upper half and in the lower half of my legs. My legs are blue in color...not dark blue...but i noticed a color change of the skin. My legs aren't swollen. Sometimes i feel my legs are heavy. sometimes i feel pain while walking and some other times i feel it when i'm sitting or lying in bed. Right now i'm sitting on a chair and i feel pain. What scares me is that most of the times i stay at home which might lead to blood clotting. Some say that the Doppler Ultrasound may not detcet blod clots in small veins. So i might have DVT and The Doppler test won't detect it. I'm very scared. Do you recommend doing other test like "D-Dimer" and venography? I'm 26 years old and i'm too young to die. I might even have P.A.D !!! Please ... read more |

My hubby was diagnosed with a dvt in his leg and a PE in his lung (leg clot broke up and lodged in his lung). He was on warfarin for 3 mths and came off it about 3 weeks ago. He's now complaining about headaches that won't go, starts choking at night and I'm a little worried that he might be developing a new clot. The doctors have no idea where the first one came from as he had no history or medical reasons why he should have one and he doesn't want to go to the doctors over "just a headache". They brought him off the warfarin to test for reasons why it occured. Are these symptoms enough to justify going to the doctors or am I just getting paranoid (always nice to have a doctor tell you your hubby almost died). |

I was diagnosed with a DVT in August. Ultrasound last month showed clot in my left calf is still there so I'm on Warfarin until February. Other than being tired a lot, I normally don't have too much reaction to the Warfarin. Beginning on Christmas Day, I've had a couple of alcoholic drinks around 4 times and messed up on my Warfarin dosage, skipped one day, took a double dose one day by mistake etc. Now I started having horrible diarrea and vomiting and nausea last night. My instructions from the clinic say to contact them if I have diarrea, vomiting or fever. Why would the clinic instruct me to contact them? They are closed until Monday and it doesn't say to go to the ER, so I should either hopefully be OK by then or if not I will call. I just don't know if my diarrea and vomiting is caused by my actions, or if I may have a touch of food poisioning since I've been away this pas t weekend eating food prepared by different hands and sleeping in a place that is less sanitary t... read more |

Since i developed a small dvt below my knee 18months ago, caused by an injury, i have had scans and blood tests, all negative. So what i need to know is when the anxiety dissapears. Feeling so worried that i will get another, even though my docs have said that its very unlikely, i managed 48 years without one. I have no pain and no swelling in my leg, so im lucky there, but its just these awful panicky feelings. Any words of encouragement greatly appreciated. |

I have been so excited, end of January is when I finally get to go off warfarin... my main complaint is just that I have to remember every day. DVT was thigh to foot (actually likely started in my foot and worked backwards). It remains to be seen if it was the result of a clotting disorder or a broken toe on that foot, or something in between or a combination. It wasn't found for about a month after I first experienced both swelling and pain... in fact, by the time it was discovered I was barely able to walk but not in pain because my leg was so swollen the nerves had been cut off, I was numb from the knee down. In the first few days, the feeling came back before things settled down and I was SO uncomfortable still. For probably a month after or so, I was still in pain, I'd been 10 days on the Arixtra while I got to a theraputic dose on warfarin, and slowly but surely that improved. I rested and slept with my leg and especially my foot elevated. By the e... read more |
