UK Support Group/Society?

Hi everyone,

Before I start, does anyone know of a UK support group or society? I can't find 1 and if there isn't 1 I was wondering if people would be interested if I looked into forming 1?

Whilst i would not want to detract from this excellent site, i think it would be nice to start a group who are all dealing with the UK health service/NHS-together we may be able to improve our treatment and awareness of DVT and related illness. I'm sure many of you are also frustrated at the lack of awareness in general about it. Also, I thought it would be good to arrange social meetings (with facilities for all to keep our legs raised!!!) to discuss our issues and support each other in person.

I'd be grateful if you'd let me know what you think

Cheers for now!

Hi...
I have been on warfarin for about 8 months and have had zero sex drive since. Has anyone else had this side effect, and did you get your sex drive back after you came off warfarin?

Sorry, this is a more risque topic for this forum, but I want to know I am not alone, and want to know if it is going to come back! I am only 26!

Looking forward to any answers,
Lucy

I had 3 dvt's in my left leg in july 2009, 5 1/2 weeks after having my second son, i have protein s deficiency and was put on enoxaparin injections at 16 weeks pregnant which didn't work as i still had the clots.
I was put on warfarin soon after having the dvts so thats been almost 6 months.
my INR levels have never been stable and the moment 1.9.
I woke this morning with the same swelling and pain the my right leg as i had in my left so i went to my doctor which is 110% sure its another clot, im having the scan tomorrow to confirm it.
I was wondering if this has happened to any one else, having a dvt on warfarin and whats the next step im really worried as im only 31 and now both legs hurt.
kind regards Rachael.

Questions about May-Thurner

Well hi. I've just recently started posting here, have been on a couple other dvt support sites but this one seems to get a bit more daily action and feedback...

I'm 33 and got my dvt on February 14th (happy valentines day to me!) It is in my left leg, groin to below my knee, probably closer to my ankle, and the whole thing was hugely swollen and purple/blue. Blood tests before going on coumadin came back normal except for protein s deficiency, which my hemo said could be attributed to birth control. Will test again in a few months. So, I seem to be a perfect candidate for May-Thurner, altho no one mentioned this to me during my hospital stay or during follow up with my hemo. My GP of course didn't even know what it was when I asked him about it yesterday. I know there is quite a group of people on here who have M.T. and was curious what type of doctor diagnosed you. I could make an appointment with my hemo but thought maybe I should start looking for a vascular specialist or int... read more

INR Frustration.

12/4/09 I had a lateral meniscus repair. 12/8/09 I was diagnosed with a DVT (Right
Calf) in the Emergency Room. I started out on the standard treatment of 5mg
Coumadin and twice a day x 7 days lovenox. My INR at my follow up visit was 1.3
(around 12/11/09). It's obviously been a month now and my doctor has escalated my
coumadin dose to 10 mg/day and I've repeated the Lovenox once for 5 days and once
for 2 days. My INR has finally gotten up to 1.6. In the mean time I have developed
TWO new DVT's; one behind the right knee one in right thighd (confirmed by doppler
ultrasound) and possibly 1 more (unconfirmed...just symptomatic).

Why on earth won't my INR get up above 1.6? I have been very careful with my diet.
At first I just tried to keep my vitamin K intake consistent...now I've cut out ALL green
leafy veggies and other produce high in Vit. K. I'm desperate to get my INR up so I
can quit clotting.

My father had clotting issues but, he also had... read more

I Have been to one of my follow up appointments at the hospital today after getting dvt a year ago,i was told a year ago to wear a stocking for 2 years which i was measured for. Then today the doctor has told me they recommend after two years that i wear them long term as im only 27 and they said because the veins be damaged it be for the best in the long run!Has anybody else been told to wear them long term?My dvt leg is now thinner than my other leg as the stocking has pulled it in,i just hope this will correct it self and also i still get discolouration in my leg when i stand without the stocking on esp after been in the shower.

Advice on flying, exercise and stockings

I was diagnosed with DVT from calf to groin in November (very shortly after climbing Kilimanjaro in Africa). I am (was then) fit and 38 - maybe it was the extended time at altitude or the flight (or both). I have now stopped fragmin injections and on daily 6mg warfarin.

I have been told I cannot fly or do any exercise (other than light walking). As you can tell my interests from how I got this DVT - I would like to resume both flying and exercise as soon as it is safe!

How long do people normally have to wait before flying again? What types of exercise are safe to resume now that I am able to put weight on my leg again..?

Also I have just been given stockings to the knee only. These are ok in the day but by evening seem too tight just under the knee and leave big red marks - is this normal? Would I be better with a thigh length stocking?

Am relieved to have found this forum for my questions. As my GP sent me away twice with a calf strain before I was finally diagnosed ... read more

Could multiple sclerosis by caused by blocked veins?

New dawn? A theory suggests doctors can reverse multiple sclerosis by unblocking the veins to the brain

Some doctors believe MS is a disease of the blood vessels, specifically the veins. The blocked blood vessels allow iron to leak into and damage the brain.

Blood clots & filter

Hi... i ruptured my archillies tendon 3 weeks ago & was unable to have surgery for a week. A routine ultra sound was done a week after the injury and an extensive DVT was found above my knee. 5 days later a scan was done to my chest and blood clots were found in the base of both lungs. I have been on warfarin for 2 weeks now. They want to operate on my leg but can only do so if a filter is placed into my stomach via my groin. The filter is attached to string that dissolves after 6 weeks and the filter remains inside the stomach indefinately. Apparently this is a new trial and hasn't been done before at this particular hospital. Once the procedure is done, they can operate on my archillies and i will be on warfarin for 3-4 weeks as opposed to the 6 months as first thought. I was wondering if anyone has had this filter put in and had any pros/cons about the procedure. Any information would be awesome. Thanks.

I was diagnosed as having a dvt on my right leg & a small one on my left groin
back in august 09, I've been on coumadin since. My gp said coumadin for 8
months as did the hematologist ( twice). Some blood tests were done & came
back negative for clotting disorders , anyway I returned to the hema dr for a 3
month check to find he'd left the office & saw a lady hematologist & she says
there were acute & chronic blood clots judging by the doppler report & I'd need
to stay on coumadin for life . What or who do I believe ?? I'm confused as 2
people are saying one thing & someone else is saying another .

Dabigatran (Pradax) - Info Needed

Hi all,

Is there anyone out there taking PRADAX®(dabigatran etexilate) and or anyone with knowledge about this new drug?

I first found out about dabigatran, from a friend, who's mother-in law was recently prescribed it after surviving a clot induced stroke. She said it has no side effects and requires no INR monitoring.

From what I was able to find on line, here in Canada, dabigatran has been prescribed for people who have hip and knee replacement surgery to ward off DVT/PE and is all the information I can find.

So why am I stuck with Warfarin and all it's wonderful side effects?

I'll be asking my GP about this next week and will post what he tells me asap.

Hi there,

Apologies for the length in advance!!

I'm wondering if someone has had a similar experience to mine. I am 25 years old and
about 5 months ago I managed to aggrevate an old knee condition (actually, it's one
related to ischemia/bone death).

Get this: Ever since then I have been on crutches. Waiting for surgery. Yes, I am on the
'fast tracked list' Thank you Canadian health care. Also have been off work, keeping
leg up.

I'm also on Yaz (bc pill), and because I have pcos, have slightly elevated triglycerides.

I don't know if I am overreacting to this or not, but here's the situation... My foot has
been swelling and turning purple since I injured my leg, so that's nothing new...and I
had been going to regular physiotherapy up until Christmas...

Ever since I have taken these couple weeks off (leg up, not moving much), my entire
calf and halfway up my thigh has been turning purple with these white blotches, and
swelling slightly. M... read more

warfarin and alcohol

Hi there,

I am new to warfarin and will be on it for life. I used to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine , and when I socialised with friends maybe a few more! I was told by doctor that I should only have 1 drink anymore as it reacts with warfrin and thins the blood too much. Needless to say I am finding it difficult to come to terms with fact that for rest of my life I will only be able to have 1 drink together. Dont get me wrong, I dont have drink proble, but at times eg parties, weddings, bbqs etc I would have more, and Im wondering what has your experience been with alcohol? How long did it take to get used to non drinking? As I said, I was never a heavy drinker, (except maybe a university!) but I do like to have glasss of wine with meal or sitting out in garden. Do I have to face drink free life??

recent extensive dvt diagnosis

I am 33 years old, was taking contraceptive pill and am diabetic. Apart from that, was
completely healthy and active. I developed a bad pain in my leg which continued to
large amount of swelling. After an ultrasound I was diagnosed as having extensive
below and above knee dvt with one at groin. This was last week. Since then I am
injecting 0.55 Heparin and taking 5mg warfarin. I feel no pain when lying down or
sitting very still, but in agony when i stand or walk even a few feet.

I understand everyone is different, but what can I expect? Will the pain subside soon,
how long will the swelling take to go, will i be able to walk again soon? Is there hope
of full recovery from this?

Any advice appreciated

Lowest, Safe INR and Flying

Anyone have any idea on what is a safe INR level to fly with?

I am supposed to be between 2 and 3. Getting blood checked tomorrow and then doing about 15 hours (London to Chicago- the long haul, plus two other shorter flights) on Wednesday.

If my INR turns out to be low...do I keep my plans and still fly out?

PS: work for an airline, so I can be flexible about travel dates.

Thanks all.
