Walking with blood clots

I can't seem to get a straight answer from my doctor. I had blood clots in both lungs, and in my left leg. They put a filter in and I'm home and walking pretty slow. I also have parkison's so that doesn't make things better. I walk slow about 1/4 mile and my legs hurt. My left leg is 3 1/2 " bigger than my right leg. This has been that way for over 2 months. Will it be good for me to force myself to walk even though my legs hurt? I just want to get better. I can't drive because my parkison's has my right leg shaking and my left arm and hand. I'd just like to be able to walk and know it won't hurt me. Going Wednesday to have an ultra sound to see how the blood clots are doing.

What could happen?

I was diagnosed with dvt along my thigh in July 2009, was taking warfarin and now about to be taken off it. Obviously I am a little apprehensive about stopping the warfarin in that I am scared about getting another clot.

I have been told that I won't have a repeat scan (to see if there is still any blockage in my vein, be it the clot or scar damage) but I still suffer with some pain, slight swelling and discolouration.

The medial professionals have not been too forthcoming with answers to my questions to date but I would really like to know what could happen after I stop taking the warfarin?

pulmonary embolism

Three months ago I was in the hospital with Pulmonary Embolism. Blood clots in both lungs and my left leg. They did a filter to stop the clots from moving up. Today the doctor did an ultra sound and said I have blood clots in three places in my left leg. He said they might have been able to suck the blood clot out, but he didn't think it would work now. The blood clots are embedded in.
What does that mean. Am I going to die if the leg gets bigger. They said there isn't much more they can do?
Has anyone out there had this problem?

Hello,
Any help on this would be appreciated! I am 23 years old, had a DVT in my calf after an opp on my left ankle in august '08.
I am now 11 weeks pregnant and cant seem to find anything that gives any advise on the internet about what happens next.
I am waiting still for an appoitment at the hospital after being refered as urgent from my midwife.
Is it true that any one with a previous DVT is treated later in pregnancy as though they have it again?
And do you have to be induced?
Any advise would help!

Kind Regards x

H1N1 vaccine and INR

FYI: H1N1 now available for adults through my HMO, I am around children so I got it
yesterday when I got my last INR. The clinic called today to let me know that the H1N1
has for other patients led to a spike in INR (though they were thrilled that I got it). My
INR came back at 1.7 (eep! It was 2.5 last time and the only thing I changed is that I've
been exercising now 6 days a week -moderately- instead of 3) but they said they aren't
changing anything and I have to go back for another test Thurs... they anticipate if tested
before they I could be pretty high. Just FYI, those of you who were thinking of the
vaccine yourself.... the vaccine clinic did not explain why they were so worried about INR
when the reg flu shot line was not so much last fall... but I get it now.

If anyone at all has any questions on compression stockings, feel free to ask them here. I will do my very best to assist you with your questions or concerns. We have been fitting these stockings for nearly 38 years dating back to the early 1970's. We currently sell them online at http://www.foryourlegs.com and our knowledge and experience in this industry have quickly helped us to become the largest online compression therapy retailer in the country.

We deal mainly with Sigvaris, Jobst, Mediven and Juzo brands, but are incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to the "off-brands" as well such as Therafirm, Activa, Futuro, Truform, Ames Walker, Allegro and many others. We focus on the 4 brands listed above as these are the endorsed brands and the ones physicians recommend. They may cost a bit more, but when it comes to health one should never compromise efficacy for price.

Anyways, we would love to assist anyone with... read more

New DVT

It's good to find this forum. I was diagnosed with a DVT in my left calf (extending to popliteal vein) just before xmas 09. There is no obvious cause (but i do smoke, shame on me). I am now of warfarin for 6 months.
Curious to find out why I got this. About 2 years ago (!) I went to GP with some pain in my hips and also my left leg (where the DVT now is). It was hard to describe those pains, they were sort of 'electric' and only at night. I am using the past tense because they seemed to go away. Anyway, my GP tested me for rheumatism and gout, which came back negative and i never followed it up. Do you think that was the start of something that led to the DVT?
I am also experiencing occasional pain in my groin area, on that left side. I haven't mentioned this to the docs. Although when I was diagnosed they did ultrasound that area and it was clear. Does warfarin prevent new DVTs?
Any help, interest, support would be appreciated. I am usually a very calm person but since diagnosis... read more

DVT\PE and lot of pain

Greetings and thanks for this forum. I was diagnosed last monday with 2 blood clots that blocked my veins, dvt. Tues morn I went for surgery to remove the clots. The doc noticed I was short of breath and prescribed a CT. The results came back that I had a clot there also, pe. The surgery plans changed and I received a tulip filter in my groin area. Then a lovenox injection before leaving the hospital. Today I have had my 3rd injection (1xday) and I still hurt, hurt so bad. I can barely walk, my shoulder hurts, my ribs hurt, my stomach is upset, I am not hungry, I have night sweats and so on. Any others with reactions like this? When will the pain stop? I also started warfin (sp) last night 5mg. Is it normal for the pain and it will slowly subside?

well I was diagnosed in August 09 with a clot from knee to groin in my right leg, following 2 long haul flights to UK & back to US.

I thought i'd pulled a muscle & ignored it for about 3 weeks until I could hardly walk it was sooo painful & my leg swelled up, went to ER, on Lovenox for a week plus coumadin, 6 weeks later when all pain & swelling had gone, my left thigh started to bother me, back to ER, small clot on left groin.

My hematologist thinks they were both caused by flights, but left leg never was scanned at 1st ER visit, so no way of knowing.

Anyway, one hematologist tells me I need to be on Coumadin for life, the other says 6 months, also my GP says 6 months, so I go to another hematologist who looks at my blood test results, no clotting factors, sends me for another doppler, which I had done this morning, clots are still there, but he was unable to tell me if there had been any improvement as he didn't have previous doppler report.

I have another appt wit... read more

Quitting Warfarin four months early...

or...2 months late, depending on how you want to look at it!

I was originally put on a 6 month regimen of warfarin starting early June of last year. However, after deciding to study abroad for a year and after meeting with a hematologist, my warfarin time was extended for a year, mostly because it wold provide a sort of safety net while I was away in another country.

Long story short, I dropped out of my study abroad program at semester, partly because I was unable to maintain a normal INR.

I will have been on Warfarin 8 months on the 2 of february and I am sick of it. Of the 8 months...I have maybe enjoyed a two month span of a normal INR. At this point, the stress levels and frustration with this drug I feel are stronger than the therapeutic benefit of Warfarin.

Since I am home from Spain...I want to check into alternative (NATURAL!) ways to maintain my blood.

I have Factor V Leiden, and a stent placed from MTS. I will get a D-Dimer and the complete blood work ... read more

Hi my husband had a dvt and PE in December 07 and was put on warfarin for the usual 6 months. He had another dvt in the back of his knee in October 09 and has now been put on warfarin for life (he has since found out he has 2 blood disorders)He is in really bad pain in his leg, groin and heal but for the past 2 months is getting alot of pain in his back - kidney area - like a constant stitch and also a pain in his stomache and hip area (he is dropping to bits!) A scan has shown nothing but he is obviously worried sick and his doctor is useless. Has anyone else had any problems like this? He also brings up really dark blood in his mouth on a morning and had clots out of his nose the other day!

So far, that is my diagnosis, but the hematologist office REFUSES to return phone calls. I've been calling for the remainder of the test results and they never call back. (They are really rude and unpleasant. The doc is very kind, but I just don't know if he is being proactive enough for my very broken body...this is getting off topic, I'll save that issue for later).

Okay, so I have Factor V. I had severe toxemia, I had gallbladder issues, I seem to fit the description.

What do I need to know about this?

Panic Attack - 2 years on

Hi All,

I had a DVT post pregnancy in 2007 and came off warfarin and stopped wearing my support tights about 8 months ago. I've been fine but with a little bit of paranoia when I feel an ache in my leg, but my main worry has always been damage to the leg rather than another DVT.
Until last night, we went to the cinema to see Avatar and it was very busy. We ended up sat in the middle of the row with our coats at our feet. An hour and a half into the film I panicked thinking that I couldn't move my legs and that I was going to get another DVT. It was awful and I then started to heat up, my breathing went funny and my heart was racing.

Has anyone else felt like this? Is this normal? What should I do?

Thanks

Josie

Does anybody wear or recommend wearing the anti-embolism stockings at night during sleep. I have yet to wear them while sleeping , but was wondering if anybody else has and if it seems to benefit in the long run.
Thank you

Dvt and young

I just went to the er last week because my left leg was twice the size of my other and they found a dvt behind my knee. I'm only 21, birthday was just a month ago..every doctor or nurse I've seen has said I'm the youngest person they've ever seen with a blood clot. I've been on birth control and have been smoking since I was 15. Of course, everyone is telling me to quit smoking. I've stopped taking the birth control but I have continued to smoke. I'm down to 7-9 per day, compared to my usual pack. It was a reality check and I was just unlucky enough to be the 'statistic'. I was planning on quitting in about a year and a half because I'm going back to school and getting married. The reason I'm writing is to ask because I'm so young and this was caused by taking birth control and smoking..since I'm off the meds can I still smoke the little amount I'm smoking?? I know it constricts your blood vessels and puts you at risk for another dvt but I kind of feel like my situation if different... read more

small clot below the knee

I was told I may have small clot in my peroneal vein which is only partially occluding the vessel. I was sent home ( as I was told that the clots below the knee very rarely move) and told to take an aspirin a day, elevate my leg, and use warm compresses to my lower leg. I will see a vascular specialist on Monday. Concerned about waiting the 2 days without anticoagulants. Anyone else have this experience?

Thanks for your help,
Kathy

returning to work

I am a 36 year old high school teacher and mother of 5 children, ranging in age from 5 to 11. I was diagnosed with a DVT in my left calf, right below the knee, on 1/11/10. I spent one night in the hospital and then was sent home with Lovenox and Warfarin, with a home health care nurse that draws blood to test my inr levels. My inr level is now above a 2, and it appears that the warfarin has reached the point of being therapeutic. Is it reasonable to try and return to work on 1/19? If I attempt to go back and then find that it is too much, I will lose my disability insurance. Just wandering what other people have experienced.
