I am fairly new to all this... and have been reading this site for a few weeks.. and I have learned so much from all of you. and I just wanted to say thanks! I do have a question to ask and hope someone will be able to give me advise. My PA.. says I don't need to worry about having my blood tested. I was on warfarin but after 4 months my blood clott hadn't changed much and I had developed two more, so I was taken off warfarin and put on lovenox 2 shots per day. How often should my blood be tested? It has been 20 days..How do I know its not too high or low.. ? I know I can't do INR test, but I would think there must be some kind of time line for blood tests... Please help! thanks again.. Laurie..

Hi,

I had my DVT back in Decemeber/January (no known cause) and have been off warfarin for about 3 months now. I had a thrombophilia screen some weeks back and went to see the consulatnt today. She told me I had tested positive for the Lupus anticoagulant and I have to retest in about 6 weeks. She told me we would talk more about it next time.

Has anyone had the same results and what does this mean?

I saw my hema Dr today for a follow up and was told I tested borderline for the Lupus anticoagulant,he wants to test it again in August and do another ultrasound as my one done last week showed the clots still there, but with good blood flow ,there is a possibility I may have to stay on Coumadin for life, which is ok,I have come to terms with this,in my opinion its no different to a diabetic taking insulin every day, the alternative doesn't appeal to me.

Does anyone else have this Lupus anticoagulant thingy ??

Hi everyone,
I've noticed there are a few people on this forum who took time off work with their DVT. I went back to the office the day after my diagnosis, but was wondering whether you were told not to go to work by the doctors? They didn't say this to me. I'd rather not be working to be honest as my leg really hurts just sitting at a desk all day, but not really sure I can broach this with my employers if there isn't a proper medical reason for it and my doctor hasn't said anything. Is time off normal?

Hi I was diagnosed with a dvt behind my left knee a week ago. For some reason the pain is far worse now then it was then. My blood work came back with elevated liver values.. anyone else have that? I was wondering if it was caused by the medication.

Pain in leg during excercise after recovery

I had DVT in my right calf and a PE in November 2009. I'm on 5.0 warfarin a day, no injections.

Before this happened to me I was a runner. I would run 30 minutes a day 5 or 6 days a week. It's the only work out I can tolerate and stick to, I like it.

Today I went running for the first time since this happened to me, the hemotologist told it was okay to run again a few weeks ago.

My breathing is great, I felt I could have done my entire routine the first day back out there but my leg was no co-operating.
After about 2 minutes of running I had to stop because of the pain in my leg. After a few minutes the pain goes away.

My left leg was fine.

Will the pain in my right leg ever go away during running or is this with me for life? I'm assuming the circulation still isn't 100% back to normal and from what I understand probably never will be. The doc told me that even though I'm on warfarin that the inside wall of the vein still has some of the clot left behind and that ... read more

Me and my operation: A blast of energy that could spell the end for
varicose veins
By CAROL DAVIES
Last updated at 9:13 PM on 26th July 2010

Millions of Britons suffer from varicose veins. Cindy Bourne, 55, from
near Rochester in Kent, who runs a plastering business with her
husband Stewart, underwent a new, less painful procedure, as she tells
CAROL DAVIS.

THE PATIENT

As a keen walker, I've always been pretty fit and active - and as a
plasterer, I'm up and down ladders every day. But when I was expecting
my son Ian in 1979, I started to notice knobbly blue veins on the back
of my calves.

They weren't painful at first, but as they got worse they started to
ache unbearably, especially if I'd been standing around or shopping.
My GP said they were varicose veins - swollen veins caused when the
valves become faulty.

He explained that normally these valves open and close to keep blood
travelling to the heart, but when they fail to close properly, ... read more

hi, 3 years ago i had a dvt in my left leg, i was pregnant and i smoke, and as it has been in my family before ( my grandfather died of it) it was taken as high risk, well i did get over it, but back in january 2007 i had terrible pain in the same leg taking no chances i went straight to my doctor who sent me to hospital, i was put on tinzaparin injections and within the week the pain went, but two weeks ago i have suffered the same, i've had a scan done but no clot has been detected, so now being discharged from hospital i still have terrific pain i went back to my doctors he simply said it is post dvt pain, can anyone shed more light on this for me, will i be like this for ever? can i go abroad? i am 28 with a young child and i work in a casino so will this be affected? i am deeply concerned and cant get any information on this, my leg is constantly painful and i find it hard to do normal everyday things that i would normally do, my email is squidgelion@hotmail.co.uk i would be s... read more

hi, im new to the forum.. im 18 and have been treated for dvt for 6 months now.. i have a clot from above my groin to my calf.. the clot started from flying from new york to heathrow.. and wasnt found for 8 months after the flight.. due to the NHS and my GP dismissing my swollen and extremly painful leg as a cramp or a pulled muscle. until they finally scaned it.

i had another scan last week and clot hasnt decreased in size and is still very large..

as you will all be too im sure, you will know im feeling quite fed up not being able to exercise or much else. my question is.. it might sound abit silly.. but does anyone know if there is added risk in flying? as i need to get out to new york again

would very much appricate some help, i hope everyone gets better soon..

thanks, matt

DVT Caused MY Above Knee Amputation

On September 21, 1979 while sitting at home watching The Roper's on TV I got this pulled groin feeling in my left leg when I got up to get a beer. I was alone at the time. It did not seem like a big deal at first then about 10 minutes later I noticed my jeans getting tighter.

I went upstairs to change them when I noticed my swollen and blue/purple thigh as my toes began to lose feeling. I made it back downstairs to the phone and called an EMT friend of my father. When he saw the leg his eyes almost bulged out of their sockets. He simply said what hospital do you want to go to?

It took about 30 minutes to get to the UMASS Medical Center. By this time I could not feel anything below my knee. The doctors in the ER were residents and interns who asked the same set of stupid questions.
Finally, one asked me what I thought was wrong and I said, "I have blood clot in my leg." Their response was, "twenty-four year-olds do not have blood clots." Brilliant!

By this time the pain was... read more

help with compression hose

I hope you don't mind if I trouble you for assistance. You see, I've only just begun wearing support hose this summer. I tried a couple brands from our local Walgreens, Futura and Jobst, and neither accommodated my large feet and long legs very well. So I tried an online retailer for Sigvaris 120p. In that brand and style I'd wear a size E. The first pair I ordered fit very well, although there was a little over-stretch where the hose meets the panty. However, I was tickled at the fit and ordered 3 more. I am a little frustrated that out of the 4 total, only the first one fit the best and all 4 pair, although they were all size E, all seemed to be sized differently. I mean you could hold them all up together and the lengths', waist sizes were all different. The worst part of it is that the differences were painful - ie, one pairs waist was so small it hurt.

Anyway so I though I might try another brand, from a different online retailer. But I'm hesitant. Is what I described above ... read more

Occlusion of Common Iliac Vein

Hello!!

In Oct 2007 I was diagnosed with a large Above-Knee DVT in my left leg following hospital stay for pneumonia. I was 34 at the time

On Warfarin for the usual 6mths, then told to continue wearing compression stockings for 2yrs.

Swelling symptoms & pain have been a feature of everyday life since then, I have changed my car to an automatic as driving was very painful & haven't been able to walk without pain since the clot.

My friend recently qualified as a community nurse & suggested that my GP refer me to a Vascular Surgeon to see if they could help me.

A Doppler & MRI later & I have been diagnosed with a complete occlusion of the left common iliac vein. I have been told that a bypass is not a possibility due to the pressure in my legs & the futher clotting risk, laser treatment/stenting is not possible to due to the occlusion being a solid mass of scar tissue. I have been told not to 'push' my leg, slow down walking & do upper body exercise only, as the vein... read more

Long term use of clexane injection

Hi everyone
I have had 2 dvt's and a few years ago multiple clots in both lungs.
Warfarin was not agreeing with me and made me feel really ill - they were putting my dose higher and higher and my inr was not coming down.
I have now been on clexane for nearly 3 years with a 40mg injection daily - I just wondered if anyone else out there is on clexane injections long term as my haematologist does not know of anyone else in the same situation as me.
I am also on a high dose of calcium as one of the possible long term side effects (although they do not have enough research yet to benchmark) is osteophorosis - as im only 38 and have three kids needless to say I am quite concerned about the future - would be really grateful for anyones advice.
Incidentally, I have sporadic episodes of positive anitcardio lipins blood tests ?
Thanks - Kellie :-) x
