DVT or Edema?

Hi. I just got back from a 14 hour flight (Sydney to LA). Both legs swelled a lot during the flight, but it went down within a few hours after landing and seem to be OK a week later. Does that sound like a DVT? I did have several alcoholic drinks the night before flying, which I am sure added to it. Just wondering if I need to see a doctor before my next long flight. Any advice or similar experiences? |

How to tell new DVT or PTS?

My clot has dissolved and now I am off Coumadin for two weeks now and taking baby aspirin daily. I'm scheduled for genetic blood disorder testing at the end of the week. I'm starting to have the same pain that I had when my DVT first occured, shin pain. Initially prior to my diagnosis, this shin pain progressed to the swelling of my calf and severe pain. I'm a little freaked out because until I came off the Coumadin, I wasn't have any pain and now I have a sense of deja vu with the shin pain I'm having. How do I tell if I'm developing another DVT or if I am experiencing Post Thrombotic Syndrome? I don't want to run to the doctor for every little twinge, but I don't want to overlook it if it could be serious. What would you do in my situation, or has anyone expereinced this before? Thanks, Rose |

I have been on coumadin for 3 months, with a stable INR. I had a migraine start 6 days ago, and it is still here. I have taken several doses of tylenol...trying to keep it managable so I can take care of everything/one that I need to. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced something like this and wondering if I need to get my INR checked to make sure that the tylenol has not thinned my blood too much. Not supposed to go back for 2.5 weeks. Thanks. |

hi all! this forum is Great! I just had a few questions maybe anyone who has had a DVT can help! I have this fear of developing a blood clot in my leg and just dropping dead from it. I have been to the drs a million times, had physical exams, blood tests, and one ultrasound and nothing. My doctors said Im highly unlikely to get a blood clot, and really the only way I would get one is if I sat on a airplane all day and didnt move. They also said my leg would be very swollen red and warm. But then I read about people who had no idea they even had one. Why would my doctor tell me this? Ive heard this from several different doctors actually. But then I read different stuff. Can anyone one educate me on this? when you had a DVT did you have alot of warning signs? When are warning signs usually not present (ex: after surgery?) If my doctors have cleared me should I really dwell on this anyore? |

I am personally sick of those three letters. I had a car accident in 2000. Was not wearing my belt at the time but usually did. I was sitting at a red light on a residential street and a driver whom was drunk hit from behind. My knee hit the dash and a week later I was diagnosed with a DVT of the left leg that was very extensive. I was in the hospital for three days on heperin and then coumadin. Which followed with coumadin and a full leg compression stocking for the next two years. Being a women of child bearing age and the fact that the coumadin was not going to resolve any more of the clot I asked the doctor if I could come off the medicine and he said yes. I then downgraded to a compression stocking that only when to the knee. As long as I kept my weight in check the pain and swelling was doable. This past October out of the blue I developed another clot but this one was in the groin/pelvic area. My new doctor performed a procedure to remove the clot. He also placed a filter i... read more |

I had vein removal surgery march 22-23rd and on my followup a week later march 30th the ultrasound showed I had some blood clots behind my knee. I was put on the usual lovenox for 14 days and have been on warfarin also. Well I went back yesterday which was a month after the surgery and it showed they are gone. I am so thankful! They were small in the beginning so I was extremely lucky. Im wondering how much longer I will have to be on warfarin? Im sure it varies from person to person. Also, I was told tylenol was ok to take but no ibuprofen, advil, aleve, asprin. Then I read you shouldnt take it. What does one take for a headache? |

Has anyone had a thrombus (blood clot) in their arm pit extending into their subclavicle? I have one diagnosed by ultrasound (after a mammogram) and the Dr. sent me out for blood tests and aspirin. Warned me about PE and worsening symptoms and told me to lay off kick boxing for time, but no coumadin, yet. That is probably coming, but still...I am concerned. |

Hi, I'm new here and have been looking for a forum for a while. I've had 7-8 DVTs since 1995 and have been on Coumadin. My INR will not raise. I have been around 1.4 and my Coumadin dose is now 21 mgs a day. I was wondering what others maintanence doses tend to run. Thanks! |

Hi everybody, I haven't posted in a bit, but have a question (so I know whether or not to mention it to my doctor on Wednesday). My DVT behind right now and clot in right side of groin were diagnosed mid-November. I took Lovenox while in hospital and have been on Coumadin since my dx. I have been functioning with the day-to-day symptoms of my DVT and SE's of Coumadin, but there is something that has been bugging me for a few weeks. My left leg (well, most visibly), my "cankle" is SWOLLEN! I can rotate my right foot without feeling like I have some padding around my ankle. I try to rotate left foot and it feels like it's been packed in tons of gauze. I measured it and didn't see a difference, but when I wear compression socks I can see that it's left an indentation on both sides. Do I need to be concerned? Thank you. |

Coming soon, the in-flight DVT test

Airline passengers at high risk of potentially fatal blood clots could soon be able to monitor their condition on a flight, claim researchers. Scientists are developing a computerised plastic strip that could assess the risk of deep vein thrombosis among long haul flight passengers. The new system would require one drop of blood, which would be analysed by a biochip for blood clotting markers that indicate a high risk of DVT. The single-use cartridge plate could be carried around by anyone at risk of clotting disorders, including stroke patients, pregnant women, obese people and smokers. I had my last DVT about years ago toe to groin. I was a IV drug user. Been clean 10 years and lead a healthy lifestyle. Was told I was going to be life time warfarin but stopped using it about 6 years ago. Just got off a 13 hour flight from Sydney to LA and have a pain behind my knee and a slight swelling but not sure whether it is a clot or because I drove for about 3 or 4 in a hire car and am unused to the position. Drove another 9 hours today and I am now in a motel in the desert and getting worried that I might have clotted again. I thought if you had a big clot and as far as I know mine hasnt dispersed that you couldn't clot again because it was already clotted if you know what I mean?? Has anyone any similiar experience or advice? I really don't want to go to hospital unless I have to. Thanks G |

Hi All: I was diagnosed with a pretty extensive DVT (groin to ankle) July 2009 and have been recovering since. I was very active before and have gotten back to a pretty active state since (walking, biking, lifting weights, playing tennis). I continue on warfarin and will probably do so at least until July 2010, and possibly 2011. This is do to the extensiveness of my clot and also because I had an initial diagnosis of lupus anticoagulent. I wear compression stockings religiously, etc. The question I have for you all is about circulation. I have noticed what I would consider to be continuous and even worsening circulation issues. These include continued discoloration of the affected leg (left) when standing and less when sitting. I also started having discoloration problems in my non affected leg (right) though not as bad. I also have discoloration extending to my hands when standing (not when sitting), and periodically experience light headedness when standing. Howeve... read more |

Hi i found out that i had a dvt in one leg and a superfical in the other after having my baby in Oct last year.I started off with Clexan injections in my stomach which with the dosage required was 2 injections everyday for about 2mths to get my irn levels to where they should be which is 2-3 and then onto warfarin which was 13mg which im still on.I keep getting my periods every 2 weeks which just come on with no symptoms and are really heavy as well. They are that heavy that i to am going through pads and tampons every half an hr or so.I also got a umbilical hernia while pregnant and is getting operated on in June which therefor have to go back on the injections 1 week b4 operation but am scared that i will have massive bleeding whilst getting operated on.Has anyone been operated on whilst on large amounts of warfarin and had any troubles with bleeding and the clot has come back again and then the drama begins again? |

Great site! (thanks to whomever started it) What did we do before the internet???..Recently diagnosed with DVT (total blockage of popliteal vein)...may have had something perking since last Aug (I went in complaining about severe swelling in the leg) but the cast on my leg probably pushed me over the edge and things became painfully obvious. Kept me in the hospital 7 days...Lovanox x2/day plus Coumadin (5mg?) took forever to get to a 2.1 at which point they released me. As soon as I got home fell back to a 1.8 and since my release I've not been able to get above a 2.1...for last week I've been in the 1.6-1.8 range. Question: If they wouldn't let me walk - or release me until I was a 2+ Why no worries now when I've been below theraputic range more often than above? Sometimes I feel like I'm in a black hole when it comes to information...My GP and hospital staff get all worked up about the DVT and then tell you "don't worry" .....Any suggestions or commiseration? |

ok so yesterday I was having alot of anxiety about getting on a plane and getting a blood clot. Well I sat in the car for an hour and a half to the airport, my flight was less than an hour. Then we had a four hour ride home, where I got out twice. Well my Inner thigh is hurting a little bit. Not alot where its affecting me, just enough so I can notice and get freaked out. Im paranoid of blood clots, and I always jump to conclusions. Which im working on with my counselor. So should i be worried about this? or am I overreacting. I have no risk factors, not on birth control, doesnt run in my family or anything. any ideas? |
