My husband scraped his calf 4 days ago then yesterday his leg swelled up within minutes and he thought he was having a third dvt. I actually phoned for an ambulance as he was feeling so ill but the hospital said he has a large bleed and just to keep an eye on it. Obviously he is really worried and thinks it is another clot. To make matters worse he has 3 broken bones in his right leg so walking is very difficult. His INR is 3.1 when it was 2.2 last week. The hospital said the bruising would take weeks to go away - anyone had similar problems. ps he has started to drink alcohol again after 2 years of being teetotal and I'm wondering if its anything to do with this?

When I was diagnosed with a DVT behind my right knee earlier this year, I was absolutely terrified and could find no real reassurance fromm the medical profession.I also went to my GP with what appears to be a small 'bleed' in my previously unaffected left calf, but was simply told not to worry about it! Yeh, right!!
Bruising? Yes, any knock results in a larger bruise than would normally be expected and it also takes longer to fade.
I am so pleased that I found this forum, helps greatly!

A week after my husbands leg 'bleed' his leg is huge - he looks like elephant man!! There is a huge rock hard lump to the side of his calf and the bruising has spread to his whole lower leg and foot - this can't be normal as its been classed as by A & E? Anyone had similar problems

Get him back to the A&E straight away and tell then to scan it.
Don't leave until you get the treatment that you want

Take care

I was recently diagnosed with massive DVT's in the femoral artery from thigh to
mid-calf. I was hospitalized and put on injections of Alixtra along with daily oral
Coumadin. I was hospitalized for 5-days and discharged when my INR levels
reached 2.3. The two previous days before discharge, they increased the Coumadin
dosage from 5.0 to 7.5 mgs./day. The following day after I arrived home, I noticed
a lot of pain in the back of my calf again, as well as several unexplained bruises,
and some little red blood spots, which my Dr. yesterday identified as petechiae. My
leg appears different looking in appearance from the other one, in that it is reddish
in color and has some "mottling" spots in the ankle area as well as a little swelling.
Additionally, I've noticed that my stomach and upper arms appear puffy and swollen
looking. I as well, have noticed some streaking of blood when I brush my teeth and
blow my nose, and have had a dry cough with occasional streaking of blood in the
sputum. Oh, .... and did I mention the "brain fog"? I have been on this drug a total
of 8 days now, and find the whole experience with the DVT's and the drug to be
kind of "scary". My INR level from yesterday's draw was 2.6, up .3 from when I was
discharged from the hospital with all Alixtra shots discontinued and in dropping the
Coumadin dose from 7.5 to 5.0 mgs. How long is the normal time to have to take
the warfarin therapy, and do these side effects improve as time goes by?? Oh, and
lastly ..... I've found the compression stockings to be almost unbearable to wear at
the lowest compression rate available ..... they just really hurt! I'm down to wearing
them only a few hours a day, but try to keep my legs elevated both in my wheel
chair during the day and at home at night in the recliner. Anyone else out their
with similar symptoms??

I have lots of little bruises on my legs below the knees. I even got one on the top of my foot from a too tight shoe. Of course, it was from my DVT leg that had swollen quite a bit that day. After getting out the shower the other day I happened to catch a quick glance at my bare upper back and saw a quarter sized bruise. "Well would you look at that" I commented to my husband. I have no idea how it got there. I've know that I'll have various patches of purple and yellow on my body as long as I'm on warfarin and I'll just have to get used to it.

I have been on Coumadin for 7 months and I am having severe calf bruising all of a sudden. I woke up this morning with a bruise that look like it follows the vein up my calf. I've also been having these weird pains above my ears in my skull. I can't get an answer from the doctors to tell me if I should be worried or not.

I had a dvt 6 months ago and have been on Warfarin since then. I am now going for a full assessment and so have been going through my medical records. In 2009 in Toronto, Canada I had a full blood count after having had INfluenza B. Then my platelet count was 632 the normal range is 150 - 450. This means my blood is stockier than normal and can lead to clotting. Why didn't they tell me. I am so relieved I am in the UK. Here I have been monitored effectively and have a medical clinic that takes all my questions seriously and prints relevant documents for me from an NHS site to give me the information I need/want.

If in doubt always ask for information or phone your local DVT clinic if you have one.A

Since starting warfarin I do bruise easily - arnica cream really helps
with getting them to fade more quickly

I also got a huge bump when I hit my head on a shelf a few weeks ago;
the comment above about the brain being sensitive to bleeds when on
coumudin/warfarin. It was under my hair, but I presume it bruised as
it was really tender for a couple of weeks.
Particularly irritating that I was in a meeting with two senior nurses
and a consultant when I did it; none of them suggested I get it
checked. I guess if there had been serious problems I'd know about
them by now!
