Exercise after massive DVT?

I was 35, fit, healthy, never took birth control pills, no serious injuries... and then out of nowhere I had a massive dvt in January 2005 and nearly died. My left leg and left side of abdomen and groin were affected and I am still using a walker (frame) to get around. I'm on Coumadin daily, and also am eating some spinach every day (for me, the vitamin k helps my inr levels to stabilize).
I have gained approx. 100 lbs and am by far the largest I have ever been. My doctors tell me in the same breath that I must lose weight, but to not do anything to elevate my blood pressure (which is low) or my heart rate!
There's a serious risk with having lyposuction, etc, so other than that, how am I supposed to lose weight?! I DO watch what I eat, am careful about what I eat and how much and am eating far less than what I ate when healthy and fit (pre-dvt), but I'm huge. My pharmacist pointed out side effects to Coumadin such as weight gain, insomnia, hair loss, and I have all the side effec... read more

Hi everyone,
I am so glad I found this place,I had searched in the past 6 months but I did not see this site.I had massive DVT in thigh from knee to crotch in December 09 and multiple PE's including 2 large ones by my heart. I did not know I had FVL until then after 4 days in a hospital they told me that I went to a larger hospital that specialized in interventional radiology. Had thrombolytics therapy on my left leg did not respond to the first medication and developed a new DVT in my calf while in the hospital and after I had been on heparin. In April I had a Rectus Sheeth Hematoma and lost atleast 40% of my blood into my abdomen had blood transfusions etc. In July I had another hemorrage in my pelvis. I have a very unstable INR I am on vitamin K therapy to try to regulate my INR along with warfarin. Anyway my problem tonight is over the last 2 weeks I knew my leg was not doing well but I attributed it to this or that. When I had my DVT in DEC. I remember telling my husband "I wi... read more

Had small dvt in calf 2 years ago following an injury. Scans show that there is no evidence of any clot and doctors say that i would unlikely have another one. But i am still really anxious and worried that i will get another one. Can anyone give me reassurance please? Thanks x

DVT

I am 36 and was in a motorcycle accident on Sat Aug 21, 2010. I was hospitalized with a dvt in my leg and am now on Warferin treatments after 11 days of the Lovenox injections. I recenlty lost 45 pounds and that took me about 7 months to do. I was very active with 2 jobs and working out at the gym on my lunch. I was told not to be working out or walking and have 6 weeks off of my part time job. I have noticed that my appetite is spiraling out of control and I am very worried that all the hard work I have done to lose the 45 pounds is completely lost. I fear I will gain it back quickly without being able to exercise. I want to work out and be more active, but at this point, I am scared to death of the consequences. I did start doing upper arm exercises, but it is not the same without the cardio. Can any of you give me any kind of a pick me up so I will not lose hope? I dont want to become that obeise person I once was.

DVT and trigger point pain

Hi, has anyone else had trigger point type pain with a DVT? By this I mean a localized knotting muscle pain with each of the first steps in the morning or after prolonged sitting – pain which can be strong enough to cause limping, which disappears as weight is shifted to the other non-DVT leg during walking, tends to diminish with continued walking, and is not present at rest. There is often localize tenderness when pressing on the painful site This trigger point type pain seems different than the cramps, aches, claudications, and prolonged standing pains that have been so well described in other threads. Is this what some people mean by charley horse?

I ask because that is how the pain started in my lower outer thigh after having a groin to ankle DVT. I got the DVT during my 5th week of being on crutches and started getting the pain as I began using my leg again after the crutches were discontinued on the 6th week. My docs do not seem to know much about it. Because the... read more

Stent didn't work- help :(

Hi, my sister has May-Thurners syndrome, and they've been treating her with medications, put a filter near her heart and gave her a stent and put her on Coumadin. She went back in to get the filter removed, hoping everything was okay- and they checked her again to find that the vein is clogged again and the stent didn't work. They went back in to try and get the blood clot removed and weren't able to take it out. That the vein is too squinny and squished. They say there's no other procedure they can do.and that she has to be on blood thinners for the rest of her life. Is there anything else we can do? Should we take her to another doctor, another hospital? We don't like the idea of blood clots traveling thru her body. Especially if they're big enough to still jam up the veins and the medicine she's on to thin them isn't really helping?

Hi everyone. I have been on warfarin for about 10 days now after 3 long months of fragmin injections for an extensive dvt running from groin to ankle in both legs. I have read about the side effects of warfarin on many sites but they only seem to list pretty major effects and what i am wondering is what are peoples personal experience with side effects if any from warfarin. I am asking this as since i started taking this (my INR is 3.1 by the way) i have been pretty tired and grumpy with more aches in my legs and just generally lethargic, could this be down to warfarin or just a coincidence? All replies will be appreciated. thanks.

Hi, I have just found this forum, can't believe I've not seen it before!

Anyway, I have just replied to another post and it occurred to me, who
has been on Warfarin the longest? I have been on it for 16 years, has
anyone else been on it this length of time?

I have recently been starting to worry about the long term side effects
but my doctor just says it's the side effects of not taking it that I
should be worried about ie getting another clot :-(

Foot massager

I'm 6 weeks on from being diagnosed with DVT. I am on Warfarin and have started to wear a surgical stocking.

I want to 'help' myself so I was wondering what kind of exercise I can do to get rid of the blood clots and keep them at bay in the future.

Walking, I know, is an option. But I have arthritis in my feet and cannot walk more than a couple of minutes.

I'm thinking of trying out a 'foot massager' as advertised on TV (UK) and various magazines. It vibrates and is recommended to use with poor circulation and swollen feet and ankles.

Does anyone know if it would be okay to use for DVT?

Thank you very much.

2nd DVT - warfarin forever?

About 6 years ago I received I a very severe injury to my knee and subsequently discovered that this led to a clot. This was only diagnosed about 2 years ago after I realised what had happened and I got a scan, showing I had scarring consistent with a prior DVT.

Then about two weeks ago I was diagnosed with a clot in my other leg. I think that this came from running for the train carrying several heavy bags - I suspect I tore a muscle. However I think it's also relevant that this was after not eating or sleeping for 2-3 days and having restarted smoking heavily having given up for 18 months. (My marriage of 6 months has broken down, which has come out of the blue). I was extremely stressed and then sat on a train for 2-3 hours, only to make the same journey a day later on the Sunday. By Thursday I realised what was happening and was diagnosed with a clot that went just above the knee. I've just turned 37.

I am now on heparin injections and 6mg of warfarin per day. I've been t... read more

Hi,
I am 28wks pregnant and just found out that I have a DVT in my femorial vein in my leg. It started out a few wks ago I was having bad lower left side back pain well the pain got worse and I went to the hospital as they wanted to make sure it wasnt pre term labor. Wel they let me go and thought it was a musscle due to workibg out at the gym. Then a day later pain started shooting down my leg so I called advice nurse she said just to rest and elevate leg. The very next day my leg was very swallon, by the time I made it to hospital it was 12 in bigger than other leg. They did a ultrasound on leg and said I have a DVT in my femorial vein. I was hospitalized for 4 days and now at home and still to painful to walk. My husband has to give me Lovenox shots twice daily in my stomach for 6 months. Also they said the medicine dont make the clot go away it just prevents new clots not to form. So I have been just praying that this one will go away on its own and will not travel. I know God ... read more

On Thursday 8/7 I had my first cycle since the DVT/PE diagnosis. I am having the worst cramps, back pain, dizziness, nausea and of course I'm flowing like a fountain thanks to the Coumadin. Could this cause me to become anemic?

Just released taking Previscan

Hi,

I was just released from the hospital today after suffering from multiple small DVTs throughout my left leg and a minor PE. I am 35 years old and otherwise healthy. I was taking low dose estrogen birth control pills and had taken two 6 hour flights over 2 days. I am American but living long term in France and I am currently taking 5 mg of Previscan. I understand that Previscan is widely used in France, but not so much elsewhere. Does anyone have any experience with this drug? Any side effects or things to be concerned about? Also any advice for dealing with my condition? I have not yet had a chance to see what my mobility limits are but the swelling has gone down considerably in my leg and I am getting around my apartment without much trouble or pain. I felt a little winded when I went up the stairs quickly.

Thanks, Lore

Swollen leg, how long till it reduces in size

The picture at the top of this forum with the swollen red leg is a carbon copy of what my leg looked like after my groin thrombosis following a hip replacement. Its been almost two years since the surgery, I've been wearing a medical sock, firs to the hip, then to the knee for almost two years now. The swelling has gone down but my leg is still larger than my other leg. I know the leg may never go back to its original size. My question is, after two years will it reduce any more. I'm quite content with the way things are (I'm still on the planet) and am wondering if its worth still continuing to wear the medical sock; to me it looks like the leg is as good as its going to get.

Compression stockings

Was wondering if anyone had any advice on compression stockings? I had a dvt
2 years ago after being very sick in bed. I ve just come back from travelling
round the states where I took a total
of 5 flights over a 4 week period. I wore my medical stockings
for every flight drank lots of
water and exercised my legs a lot. The Internet says wearing medical socks is
very effective
but can't find too much statistics. My leg is a
bit achy but it always is! Any advice would be great.

"What Symptoms Should Prompt Me & My Doctor To

The most common question from those who have not been diagnosed, is in one form or fashion, one wording or another--"Does this pain I have mean that I have DVT or should be tested for DVT? The next question is, "What tests should I have?" The most common question for all of us w/ confirmed DVT is, in one form or another--"Am I clotting again or is this new pain a result of Post Thrombotic Syndrome" (damaged valves in the vein from past DVT).

I wrote the following in response to someone wondering why their doctor refused to test them for DVT when they had symptoms. Thought I would post it under its own topic so everyone can chime in. I ask specific questions of those who have been diagnosed w/ confrimed DVT/PE at the end. I have not had a PE, so I think it might be good to have a similar article on that topic if someone w/ experience and good doctors as advisors can write that one. I hope this info helps others:
