Diagnosed with a DVT

Hi I was diagnosed with a 7cm DVT in my left calf on 23 December 2009. I was sent to the hospital and I was injected with clexine and allowed to go home and take the warfarin (Coudmin) that night. I was still under hospital care and had clexine daily and blood tests ever 2nd day and warfarin daily, this continued for 5 days until my INR level was up. My doctor has filled in a form for me to have 6 blood tests in the 3 month period and after I had the 1st test he told me to go monthly but I didn't as I'd booked an appointment for my blood test 2 weeks later and I'm glad I did as my INR level had dropped. My leg aches on the odd occassion until 20/1/10 when my calf ached and the top part of my leg was aching more than normal. I rang the Dr and was advised that if my ankle was swollen then the clot could've blocked the vein, by the end of the day I had stabbing in my leg from the pain and I went to the hospital where they did another INR test and my levels had ... read more |

Hello would welcome some advice. 2 DVTs left leg diagnosed Wed last week. Previous DVT 20 years ago. Have been told by hospital now on warfarin for life (aargghh) but also on Fragmin (low molecular weight heparin) injections - was told needed Fragmin until INR >2.0. Now been looked after in the community and had INR friday 1.7, INR today Monday is 1.6. Nurse gave me Fragmin today but not getting any tomorrow. Next appointment Wed. Should I be pushing for them to keep my heparin cover going until inr up or am I just panicking?? Any advice appreciated! |

In the leg that I have a blood clot I keep getting this warming sensation. As though someone is pouring warm water of it. It happens quite randomly and several times a day. It never lasts long but is kind of annoying. I was wondering if anyone else has been experiencing this? I am still on coumadin. |

In the big picture, I fully understand that this is petty (I am very thankful that my DVT was discovered before it became deadly), but I wanted to share this with people that would understand my frustration. To all of the women on warfarin: how do you shave your legs? I have knicked one of my varicose veins again, and it bleeds profusely. I'm supposed to come off of the warfarin in 2 months and counting. If, by chance, I end up having to go back on it for life, I'm seriously considering having laser hair removal. I've tried using very fine waterproof sand paper. It worked okay, but it was a long and tedious task. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated. |

My brother (26) received a peritonectomy (removal of major organs in peritoneal cavity) for a cancer treatment and eventually developed a humongous DVT from his left groin down to several inches below his knee. We took him to the hospital where doctors put him on the Heparin and the Coumadin and the Lovenox and NONE of it helped. So we began considering non-invasive blood clot busting treatments (which honestly needed to be done immediately due to the ultrasound showing how massive the DVT was). Unfortunately, my brother was having fevers which could be a symptom of the DVT or an actual infection. The problem is, the doctors blindly kept pushing for an infection, and would not do the non-invasive procedure until the infection cleared up. So they prescribed him antibiotics...and waited...and waited...and waited. No change. A radiolabelling of White blood cell scan showed no infection and after 3 weeks of having a DVT, they FINALLY ruled out an infection... read more |

Evening all. Just got to say how its been for the last few months. I have just ran my first 10K since my DVT in one hour. The feeling of elation is so great as i now have felt that i am nearly back to normal after two years post DVT. May seem trivial to some but i have worked bloody hard to motivate and get my self off my backside and stop feeling sorry for myself and actually get out there and worked and worked at it and now its reaping its rewards. I cant emphasise enought for the us people with this dreadfull condition to think positive. if anyone wants to read this and try it and i will say, its painfull and it hurts but it feels great just now, Please try, make the effort. I still take the warfarin and diet well and eat well. I hope we are all ok and i wish you all well. Be safe, From a somewhat warm Bonnie Scotland Chris Jones |

Hi there. I was wondering what people's experiences are with pain management and DVTs. I fell downb the stairs 5 weeks ago today and went to the urgent care place and got an xray. I had a 'spiral fracture' in my fibula and the doc gave me hydrocodone, an air splint, crutches and a referral to the ortho on Monday. I saw the orth two days later and he did another xray and said there was no 'displacement' and no need for surgery but said these fractures are very painful and would take 4-6 weeks to heal and that I should take the pain medicine every 4-6 hours and stay ahead of the pain. I went back two weeks later, taking my medicine as I should for a recheck. He xrayed again and said there was no change but that he was concerned about the swelling and tenderness and sent me straight over to the vascualr place for an ultrasound. I ended up spending about 4 hours there. They diagnosed a dvt in my left leg, proximal to distal, fully occluded and started coumadin and the stomach... read more |

Please share your stent experience if you will. Stent for May-Thurner's waiting for a date. Scared and hopeful! Will it be painful? Will I have sedation like for a Venogram? The surgeon said the inflation of the "balloon" can be painful, but it is for a very short time. I would so appreciate if you would share what your stent procedure was like, it makes it less frightening I think. Thanks tons! |

Bleeding Gums

Does anyone else find that their gums sometimes start bleeding for no reason while on warfarin? I've been on it for nearly 4 weeks now and find that every so often my gums set off bleeding on their own (only for a few minutes and not excessively!) Often when I wake up in the morning I can see that they must have bled a little in the night! My INR is always stable so it's not that - sometimes even eating a sandwich will set them off!! Just wondered whether it happens to anyone else?! Catherine UK |

"Fitted" Compression Stockings?

Hello, I have a simple (I think question). I have read that it's recommended to wear fitted compression stockings post-DVT and for airline travel to help prevent a new occurence. What is meant by "fitted"? Does that mean custom made for your foot? I did go to a medical supply store and they measured by ankle, calf, etc and recommended some off the shelf brand name hose. Are these considered fitted, or do you folks get yours custom made for your leg? Thanks a lot! |

Preparing for Stent-Questions

I am due to have a stent placed for May-Thurner's. Just waiting for a date. All is a bit overwhelming, after many years before diagnosis and now things are moving so quickly. Wondering about the procedure, especially what it was like? Did it hurt? Were you totally awake or sedated? Do I need to worry that there will be no sedation, or is it always with? And local anesthestic at the side where they put the catheter is that right, like a Venogram? The doctor said the expansion of the stent (balloon) would be painful perhaps and the back pain in recovery. How long did your procedure take? I am supposed to stay in the hospital for a few days (history of heart defect etc) and to monitor blood thinners. Would really appreciate hearing your experiences with the stent procedure. Also, wondering about blood thinners which I am supposed to take for 3-6 months afterwards. Oral medication and many trips to the lab or the injections done by myself, that is the decision. Wondering ab... read more |

Psoriasis Effect on the Quality of Life: Psoriasis is a disease whose main symptom is gray or silvery flaky patches on the skin which are red and inflamed underneath. In the United States, it affects 2 to 2.6 percent of the population, or between 5.8 and 7.5 million people. Commonly affected areas include the scalp, elbows, knees, arms, stomach and back. Psoriasis is autoimmune in origin, and is not contagious. Around a quarter of people with psoriasis also suffer from psoriatic arthritis, which is similar to rheumatoid arthritis in its effects. Psoriasis was first given that name in complete differentiation from other skin conditions by the Austrian dermatologist Ferdinand von Hebra in 1841, although there are what are believed to be descriptions of the disease in sources going back to ancient Roman and possibly even biblical times. http://www.supercareproducts.com |

My Dad had hip replacement surgery in Dec. He felt great after the surgery and was walking around with the help of a walker. 2weeks later he developed a DVT in his groin amd lost all use of his leg from the knee down. he has been on coumiden for 3 months now and still can't walk...Is this normal??/Some doctors say it is and that it could take months before he has feeling yet others say no. He says it feels like his leg is in a vice from the knee down. |

I'm in my 6th week post accident- falling down the stairs- broken fibula and "spft tissue damage". Two weeks later, diagnosed a "fairly large", right calf, DVT, and started the injections and coumadin. I was rescanned 7 days later and the clot was the same- ie not growing or moving. My INR continues to be fairly stable, and I'm contining to ace bandage wrap everyday under my air splint. (can't beqar the compression stocking yet- can't bend my ankle to get it on) I also try to elevate every day just to give myself a break. I'm not taking any pain meds now, though I was- hydrocodone for 5 weeks or so... but how much pain should I still be in? Last night, I had a PIERCING pain in my calf, deep, enough to really get my attention. But most days I just get late day pain, throbbing and swelling... is this normal? I'm not scheduled to go back until first week of May for repeat xray for fracture and then re-scan clot at 3 mths. I can't help but wonder if there's something else go... read more |
