Percentage chance of a PE?

What are the statistics that a dvt sufferer will develop a PE? What's the percentage rate of getting one before treatment and also during treatment and when the treatment has finished? My GP keeps saying it is rare, less than one in a hundred on treatment and one in a hundred before treatment. Are these just words of comfort? |

Inflammatory Bowel Ups Risk for Blood Clots

TUESDAY, Feb. 9 (HealthDay News) -- People with active inflammatory bowel disease are much more likely to develop blood clots than people without the condition, a new study suggests.. Overall, people with IBD were found to be 3.4 times more likely to develop a blood clot and eight times more likely at the time of an IBD flare. But the risk rose to 16 times higher if a flare occurred when the person was not hospitalized. The study was published online Feb. 8 in The Lancet. The researchers said the findings suggest that active IBD might be a far greater risk factor for blood clots than previously believed. "We believe that the medical profession needs to recognize the increased risk in people with inflammatory bowel disease when assessing the likelihood of venous thromboembolism and to address the difficulty of reducing this risk in patients with a flare who are not admitted to hospital," wrote Dr. Matthew J. Grainge, of the University of Nottingham, and his colleagues. ... read more |

Good Day folks, Let me tell you my story and see if there is any good sound advice out there. I am a late 37 year old white male. I am in excellent physical condition now. I workout constantly. I have set a goal being able to run a 2 mile course in 18 minutes. I can maintain the pace of a 9 minute mile for the first mile, but the second mile just gasses me so I usual finish at 20:30. I have to wonder, since I am on 8mg of Warafin a day, and the Dr. seems to think that my blood should be 4 times as thin as most people, I wonder, if my fatigue in the second mile can be attributed to the blood thinner? Thoughts.... |

Hello, I am new to this. I was told I have below knee DVT just over a week ago, after having ankle surgery. I was diagnosed after having severe pains in my calf for over a week, but i now have pains in the back of my knee going up my thigh and not much pain in my calf. Can anyone help. Im worried if the clot has moved at all even though my INR is 2.7 and they want it at 2.5. Any advise please? x |

Got a calf DVT after a brief plane trip and 4-6 hour car trip. I am partially occluded and on Lovenox and Warfarin 6 mg. We are leaving on a trip to New York City for my daughter graduation 12 days after the DVT, 9 days after starting Lovenox, 8 days after starting Warfarin. My INR started at 1, then 1.3 two days ago. Hoping to be therapeutic range by the time I fly. Will still be on Lovenox for the flight. How stupid is it to take a 5 1/2 hour plane trip and extensive walking, golf and stairs in NYC this soon after my DVT? It is 5 flights up to my daughter's apartment. I am seeing an internist who just says, 'life has risks' and says it is ok to go. I am planning to continue lab tests in NYC and send them back to my internist. |

My boyfriend was taken to hospital last Tuesday (4th May) with DVT. He's 6ft 2 and around 12 stone and although he was never the human dynamo he came to work with me three times a week which involved a commute accross London and also he walked to the shops every day. He wasn't infirm for a long period before diagnosis, is what I'm saying. I saw him in hospital on Saturday and although he couldn't walk fal we managed a goot ten minute stroll around the hospital grounds. When he was discharged on Monday his leg was very painful and it does not seem to be getting better, he can barely walk to tyhe bathroom which is fifteen steps away. What kind of recovery can I excpect for him? i don't know whether to prepare for a few months of immobility or to hope for the best and expect him to be a lot more mobile over the next week or so. Has anyone had a similar experience? Thanks..ll |

INR: Finger-stick 1 point higher than Lab

Hey everyone - I'm almost 6mths post-dvt & pe and on Warfarin with a very irregular INR despite "doing everything right", to quote my nurse. My doc's office uses a finger-stick testing meter (I think it's the INRatio brand). On Tues I had my weekly check, and it came up as 4.7 on the finger-stick. It's the lab's policy to send out a tube of blood to be tested at the hospital for >4.5. So they sent my blood to the hospital at it came back as 3.7. My nurse doesn't know why there was a whole point difference when both tests were done at the same time. Should I be concerned? Should I ask for them to do both the finger-stick and the draw next week to see if they are closer in value? I'm really frustrated with all this - I have to get checked every week because my INR is so variable (e.g. It jumped from 2.6 to 3.7 "for no reason" when I'd been at the same dose for two weeks), but now I'm worried that then finger-stick isn't accurate. Thanks in advance for any advice! |

Hi all, I had surgery in 2003 for an extensive DVT that occulded a vein from my ankle to my groin (cant remember which at the moment.) I was 18 at the time, am now 25. I was told by a few doctors that they couldn't tell me how well I would recover. I am wondering if there are any other women or men out there that have athletic ambitions and how the damage affects your training or recovery time. I was always into sports and as an adult have been weight training for a year now, hoping to compete in a NPC Figure competition someday. If anyone has any experience dealing with permanent damage and still does anything athletic in nature seriously, be it plays a sport, runs marathons, bodybuilds, etc. please let me know about your experience! I would really appreciate it. |

My mother is diagonsed with liver cancer in January, 2010 and after having several operations she seems to be recovering. But since yesterday their is too much swellen and pain in her leg, Doctors have told that this is because of blood clotting and now she is in hospital for treatment, her age is 50 years. Can any one tell me does this blood clotting is cureable or not and how long does it take for her to come back from the hospital and what precautionary measures are required? Is it life threatning ? I live in Dubai and my mother is in Pakistan so doesnt have access to all the names of medicines which the doctors are giving to her rite now but she is under observation in hospital. Does the cancer has any thing to do with this blood clotting ? Any advice or details about this disease will be helpful. plz email me at khurram_016@hotmail.com |

I wear them from waking and take them off 12 hours later daily. Is that enough? Also I heard that you can wear them in bed and if you do,you don't have to have your leg elevated during sleep. Is this true? Many Thanks |

Can Activity aggravate a clog and risk PE?

I have had an extensive DVT up to mid thigh for about 3 months now and started treatment 2 weeks ago after a scan. I feel concerned that if I am walking, cycling and bending my leg that it might aggravate the clot causing it to break off thus giving me a PE. But doing no activity at all would surely make it worse. The nurses just tell me to do gentle exercise half hour a day but they are reluctant to answer most of my questions. They just tell me all will be fine and not to worry. The GP also says this as a PE is very rare. So does activity aggravate a clot? Thank you in advance for your answers! |

Hi, I had my period early this month, And at first thought it was Implantaion bleeding but it went for 4 days and for 2 days it was quite heavy like a period the other 2 days it was light pink and brown and very light. I was just wondering can wafrian make you have a heavyer implantaion bleed then normal? I have been on wafrian for 2 years in september. I usually have very regualr periods thats why i was a little concerned when I got it a week early. But now a week later Im getting tired all the time, And have tender breasts. Has anyone had a heavyer implantaion bleed? Or was it just my period? Thanks for any replys. |

Superficial Thrombophlebitis

Hello All! A Happy New Year to everyone! I spent New Year’s Eve in the hospital getting going on anti-coagulants after going in for a doppler exam that revealed a sizable clot in the Greater Saphenous Vein of my left leg from just above the knee extending up 6” or so (my first clot of any kind). I have no risk factors to speak of. I was told from the start that I had DVT. Technically the GSV is not a deep vein, it’s a superficial vein which carries roughly 18% of the blood back from the leg – so I’m pretty sure that what I have is technically referred to as Superficial Thrombophlebitis (STP). I was told to go to the emergency room straight away and begin anti-coagulant treatment – in my opinion this was the right move because my clot was growing towards the saphenofemoral junction – this is where the superficial GSV joins up with the deep femoral vein. Has anyone in the group experienced this? I’d love to chat with you. Matt |

"DVT nearly killed me - a week after I stepped off the plane" Like most of us, Paul Taylor assumed blood clots only develop straight after a flight. It was a mistake that almost cost his life http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1279225/DVT-nearly-killed--week-I-stepped-plane.html My blood runs cold to think what might have happened if I hadn’t dialled 999,’ says Sarah Taylor of the moment she discovered her husband, Paul, collapsed on the sofa. Despite his protests that she was being melodramatic, she insisted on calling an ambulance. It saved his life — for, although Paul had only felt mildly unwell for a few hours, he could have died. The cause? A long-haul flight. It was the night of the couple’s joint 40th birthday party in July 2008, not long after they’d returned from a holiday to Las Vegas — a birthday treat to themselves. |

So it is customary I guess to prescribe coumadin for the rest of the patients life if they have had two DVT's. I am hetero, my father has had two DVT's and is on blood thinner for the rest of his life. I am not sure when I got the first clot. We assume it was after my ATV accident when I was 16. i broke my femur (ouch) and had a rod put inside of it. They did put my on Lovonox for 1 month after wards. That was in 2000. In 2008 I was pregnant with my son, at 7 months gestation I started having problems with my leg (we knew at this point I had FV leiden) A Doppler was performed and found DVT #1. It is considered chronic, there is so much scar tissue it has not moved. Thank God! apparently it is huge, I certainly would be dead. Anyway I went on blood thinners for 6 months, the clot did not change I came off, things are fine. Fast Forward to this past February. I has surgery on the same leg, this time my ankle. To remove a benign tumor. I was on crutches for 1 month Arixtra for only two... read more |
