Hey guys and girls! So heres my story.. On June 13th, i had my last ball hockey game of the season, and I got hit by a slap shot(very hard) on my left thigh, which eventually became a bruise. For the first 3-4 days, it was just like any other bruise, and I could live life normally, and walk fine. Then the next day as I walk home from school, my leg starts feeling "weird" but not tot he point where I can no longer walk, as time progresses(2 days) my left leg is swollen and I cannot walk, of coarse when you're a teen, you don't expect it to be anything bad, so I just put an ice pack on the "bruise" and rested both days. Then the next night(Friday night, becoming Saturday morning) I wake up at 4 am in indescribable pain, and I go to my family doctor. They refer me to children s hospital in Vancouver, so I immediately go their. So on June 19th I am in the hospital, and they do an ultrasound and tell me that I have DVT. This is especially weird because it happens normally in older pe... read more |

I had bloodwork done last week, and two days later was sent a letter to pay my Dr a visit "at my earliest possible convenience". Evidently I'm a mutant. :D Turns out that I have both a genetic mutation which increases my risk of developing DVT, and a high homocysteine level which puts my cardiovascular risk from the genetic mutation into a high risk level. The mutation is the methylenetetrahydrofolate (MTHFR) Gene Mutation (C677T), and apparently 8-18% of the population has this mutation. I guess there's a good possibility I'll be on warfarin for the rest of my life, and Vit B and Folic Acid are supposed to reduce my homocysteine level. The test for this is a simple blood test which tests for both MTHFR and Homocysteine. If you haven't found out a cause for your DVT yet, talk to your Dr about getting this test done. Who knows ... you might be a mutant too. :D |

Hi everyone, i am hoping that someone has some sort of advise for me... i have been on warfarin for 14yrs now (since i was 16) i developed a DVT in my groin and a PE in my lung in 1996 - i got this from being on the pill. I have since found out that i have 2 hereditory disorders - Protein C resistence and Factor 5 Lydon. So i now know that i'll never come off of warfarin. I have contacted my haemotologist recently to request to come off my warfarin and go on fragmin so i can try for a family, its taken her 3 months to come back and tell me that she cant help me. Has anyone got any idea's where to go now? I live in the UK and have no idea of what to do next, it feels like the door has shut on me and i am devestated!! Thanks Jill xx |

I was diagnosed with this recently, which is DVT in a vein in the brain after long international flight. Scariest time in my life and very glad I'm still here. It seems quite rare, has anyone else had this? Is it likely you will get another DVT from flying etc? |

Hi all, question FVL, hetero, birth control pills were main causes of clot about one year ago. I am scheduled to go off Warfarin next Tuesday. Howevvver. I am wondering about Emergency Contraception. What are the implications of taking Plan B while on Warfarin? I assume it will drop INR, but I am scared of getting a clot from it....anyone have any idea as to how these two drugs interact? SORTA time sensitive... thanks! |

Was diagnosed with DVT in right leg on 1/8 after having surgery on the right knee on 1/3. Was on crutches for six weeks due to the knee surgery and have been off for 3 days now. About 10 days ago I started having pretty severe pain in the opposite calf. Was tested for a DVT in that calf that was negative. I've been therapeutic for 5 weeks with Coumadin/Lovenox. Has anybody else experienced pain like this in an opposite calf? It hurts worse than the DVT leg. |

Hi guys. I have been suffering with DVT for 6 years now and have constant pains and pins and needles in my legs. Both my legs, from the tip of my toes into my pelvic area are completely clotted. After 6 years the clots are still there and have not been disolved. From having constant problems with my legs, and having to be on warfarin for life I was wondering if there is anyway a vein transplant can be done? Is there such a thing? |

I think I have DVT. So far I do know that my blood is extremely "thick" apparently. I have been doing some research online and am just getting more and more confused. One fact I can tell you : this thing is scaring the hell out of me. My body actually feels weak when I read about all these things that could happen. It scares the bejesus out of me. And what if I need to take Warfarin - it is rat poison. I am relatively young. Will I need to take it for the rest of my life ? What the hell is it going to do to my liver/kidneys/spleen etc over the years ? Can you still get an erection on this medicine? I can't believe poison is medicine. Great. This whole thing is just bad,...bad. Some people say we can just drink lots of water and take vitE/fish oil etc. Then others are saying NO, don't play around with it. Very, very confusing. |

I have been on Warfarin for nearly 2 months now. I am going on holiday at end August meaning I would have been on it for nearly 4 months. I'm told I will have to go on it for 6 months. Can I stop taking my Warfarin for 2 weeks whilst on holiday so that I can enjoy myself and drink alcohol? Thanks |

Coumadin makes a lot of us very absent minded and makes it difficult to focus or concentrate. I find myself talking like an idiot often. now is anyone else like this? There isn't really much I can do about these side effects besided stopping Coumadin and thats a no way. |

Flying with DVT

I know this comes up frequently but I would like advice. I had a massive P.E. last March following an injection in a varicose vein when it's likely that foam broke off and blood clotted round that. I have a DVT in my leg probably part of the original event. It took me about a year to recover and conquer my anxiety. I was on warfarin for 8 months and then able to stop it. Now I want to fly to Canada on an 8 hour flight. My haematologist said it was ok if I inject heparin before each flight, wear compression stockings, drink lots of water and do the leg exercises. I felt confident and then a friend implied that I am taking a reckless risk. Any advice/ experience of flying with DVT? |

Hi I had DVT in December 2008 and thankfully do to treatment it was cleared up. Unfortunatly for the last year or so I've been suffering from pain in the DVT afflicted leg. The pain sometimes feels like heat, othertimes a dull ache or sometimes a combination of the two. It's really starting to get me down now. I was given knee high compression socks but I find them very uncomfortable and they dont really help the pain. Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks |

I have Kaiser insurance and I am only getting help from my primary care Doctor. After being on coumadin for months, another thrombus has formed in my right upper posterior tibial veins. My Doctor doesn't seemed concerned. The only treatment I have received is the blood thinners. I am concerned about PTS. I would like to request a referral, but am unsure exactly what to ask for. Please help! |

How long to wait after DVT before hysterectomy

This forum is great. I just had DVT and PE diagnosed - not confirmed but speculation given no other health or travel issues is the large fibroid pushing into my vein. If that is really the cause, I'd like to have it out ASAP. It appears most people have surgery, then DVT - not the opposite. Any that needed surgery after DVT and PE know how long you have to wait or what test you have to pass before you can have major surgery? |

Does anyone take claritin for allergies and if so did it affect your INR levels if taking warfarin concurrently? |
