clotting while on warfarin

I will try and word this post right without trying to go into too much detail as part of my problem involves menstruation. i am 4 months since getting my dvt's and been on warfarin for 4 weeks now. 2 weeks ago my inr was 3.2 so been taking 7mg 5 days, 8mg 2 days. blood test yesterday and my inr is down to 2.0 and been told to continue with same dose warfarin and test again in 3 weeks. Im having my monthlies at the moment and for most of the day i have been passing small bits of clot and not long ago passed a fairly big clot, sorry i know some people don't want to hear this kind of thing but i am worried as i thought being on warfarin i wouldn't clot. i don't know if i should phone the warfarin clinic tomorrow and tell them or if i am worrying about nothing. I thought on Friday night i might be developing another clot in my leg as the lower half of my calf went very red and very hot to the touch and swollen and i couldnt do anything to relieve the discomfort i was in ( the only sign i had with my original clots was pain, no red, swelling or heat) by the time i woke up saturday morning it had gone back to the usual post dvt aches and pains. since stopping fragmin (on it for 3 months) and going onto warfarin my leg pain and discomfort has got a bit worse. I'm asking from advice from all you helpful people on here first as i don't have a very understanding doctor and i don't like to bother the doctor unless i think it is serious but it is worrying passing big clots like this. thanks

I'm not giving medical advice, but only talking about my experience. I was on warfarin for a year following DVT and PEs related to pregnancy. While on warfarin, I also passed large clots during my menses. My OB/GYN said this was normal while on warfarin. I've been off warfarin for a month now. I did not pass any clots during my most recent menses, or during the last couple months that I was on warfarin. You might want to call you doctor just for piece of mind. That's why doctors make the big bucks....to take care of their patients.

Hi Shaz, I would call the warfarin clinic tomorrow for your own peace of mind. I have been on warfarin now for 4 wks and am still having blood tests every 3 days or so as my INR levels have not stableised yet. I also have expericened strange bleeding paterns but I have had to stop taing the contrceptive pill........ It does seem like all doctors etc have a different way of doing things and it make s it very difficult to know what is ok and what is not. Hope you sort it out xxx

Shaz - Your INR is pretty stable, but if you are worried about waiting 3 weeks, ask to get tested sooner. I think you will still clot while on warfarin (e.g if you cut yourself, you will still form a clot and stop bleeding), but the clot just takes longer to form (twice as long if your INR is 2), so I think its normal to have menstrual clots. However, if you are worried, call the anti-coag clinic (I think you are UK-based?) and ask to speak to the head-nurse there i.e don't talk to the people who take the blood, but the people who run the clinic. Hope this helps.

Shaz--

Good--I like to make people laugh. WE can add 3 years to our life from laughing--did you know that?

Make sure they test you for antiphospholipid syndrome since you have had DVT and miscarriage. They'll have to test you again in 12 weeks bcs you have to have 2 +'s in a row 12 weeks apart. Is that your only miscarriage or have you had others? Do you have migraines or any other neuro-type symptoms?

I hate bananas. I had a traumatic experience w/ a banana when I was 4 y/o. I tried one, didn't like it--after begging for it and being threatened by my Mom that she knew I didn't like them and I better eat the whole thing OR ELSE! So to avoid OR ELSE I threw it under the bathroom cabinet and didn't remember it until a week later.

It was no longer the pretty yellow I remembered, but was black w/ things flying around it and I was horrified! I went running thru the house terrified that the banana ghost was going to get me and make me shrivel up and turn black. My Dad thought it was hilarious, my Mom wanted to do 'OR ELSE' to me really bad I could tell, but he wouldn't let her bcs he thought it was so cute. Thank God for cute!

Hi Shaz, I have experienced the same clotting that you are talking about since I started on warfarin and when I enquired about it, I was told that my periods could be heavier while on warfarin. I know it can seem a bit scary at the time but in a way it's reassuring to hear that other people are going through the same thing.

I phoned the clinic today and the nurse told me it wasnt unusual to clot while having heavy period bleeding and was happy as my inr is at 2.0 that it is nothing serious, but said maybe i should see my gp and get a coil fitted while i am on warfarin to stop my periods. its good to know its nothing major i will stop worrying about it now.
sharon- i will ask about the testing for antiphospholipid syndrome as i had mysecond miscarraige in april and my first in 2000 (i am lucky enough to have 2 lovely daughters despite this) and i have suffered with migrain for years on and off. i had my first migraine when i was 5yrs old and i didnt know what was happening to me. thanks again for everyones helpful advice. have a nice day everyone x

Me again lol. just read a link that was posted here for APS and i think i should def get tested for it. aswell as the miscarraiges and migraines i do have muscle weakness in my arms, one of them gets so weak at the top that i have trouble lifting my arm to brush my daughters hair sometimes. also with my 1st pregnancy 12yr ago oneof the blood tests came back showing i had an extra antibody in my blood and i had to carry an alert card with me, i cant remember what it was now but i know when i was tested 6yrs ago in my second preg nothing like that showed up. i will mention all this when i next go to the warfarin clinic in september

Thanks for the last post. I also wondered about all of this except I am having a hard time getting any answers from any type of doc. I guess they are really busy. I am interested in knowing if you decided on getting the coil or not. My periods are very long now and I am wondering if you know more about this coil.

Hi sarah, my gp told me that the coil (not the copper coil) would either make my periods very light and less painful or more than likely make them stop all the time it is fitted. Sounds good to me that especially as i dont want to risk falling preg again and the coil can stay in for up to 5 years. Once i have got this period out of the way i will def be having one fitted and see if it helps matters as i cant carry on bleeding this much every month while on Warfarin. Are you in america or britain, i know in britain you can see your gp or family planning clinic to have this fitted.

My daughter is 19 and developed dvt shes been on warfrin since sept 26th and has had such a heavy period it left her severely anaemic and she had transfusion yesterday, they have said they will fit her with minera coil to help with periods as she can't take combined pill anymore. I am worried as I have read some horror stories about side effects of coil does anyone have any experience of this please. Many thanx

I've had a Mirena fitted approx 18 months ago. I suffered a DVT and PE following knee surgery 12 months ago, they don't believe the Mirena contributed to it. I took warfarin for 6 months but developed another PE 3 months after I ceased it, cause unknown, so I'm now back on warfarin for the long term.
The Mirena is painfull to have fitted and I had stomach cramps and spasms for the next 12 hours or so, but after that thing settled down and I've had no problems since. The pain when having it fitted is the same as experiencing a contraction during child birth ( from what I've been told, I haven't had kids). When I get the next one fitted I will seriously consider asking them to knock me out (my doc said they sometimes do this, especially in women who haven't had children).
I intially had very light bleeding for a few days every couple of months but now this has ceased all together and I dont get the cramps etc associated with periods.
Hope this helps.

Sharon:

I had a Mirena coil fitted in 1990 at the age of 34 after the birth of my son. When I was in my mid 20's, I had clots in the superficial veins and was told I could no longer use birth control pills. The diaphragm turned out to be a less than effective means of birth control, thus the birth of my beautiful son.

I was very pleased with the coil. The first few days there was some cramping, but after that I was back to my old self again. My periods were definitely lighter and I did not experience severe cramps during my periods, something that had plagued me when I was not on the pill. At the time I was fitted for the coil, it was new, but had less side effects and potential for uterine problems, which was why I chose it. I was living in Antigua at the time, thus it was available to me.

For your daughter, I would have to say that it is important to be in tune with her body and know what is to be normally expected with this coil and what are signs that it is not working the way it should. This means she should educate herself in terms of what to expect so that she can report anything that seems unusual.

For me, it did work out well.

I had an extension of my original clot while therapeutic on Warfarin/Coumadin. I was put back on Tinzaparin and have been on it now for a year.

Wrote regarding my 19 yr old daughter in November. Well she had coil fitted, lots of cramps however started bleeding heavy again. On examination, coil not there, Xrayed as Dr feared could have pierced womb and be in pelvic cavity, but nothing showing. Bleeding continued to be heavy - looks like transfusion is needed and another mirena to be fitted. She will have been on warfarin 6 months end of march for dvt. They tell me no scan is done to check clot dispersed - she is depressed and looks so ill and fed up with it all now..... Consultant said he will see her next wk, but I think she needs to be in hosp now!!! So will take her to A&E. Don't know what the answers are - seems automatic to come off warfarin after the 6 months according to Nurses ? Help
