Morning all,,

Just a wee question for you all.

Has anyone actually been tatto'ed whilst on warfarin therapy?

I was wondering aboutgetting one and wondered what the stats were for post tattoo bleeding etc.

Be safe you lot..

Chris in Bonnie Scotland.

Not sure that is a good idea, but ask your Doctor. I have one tatto, but it was done many years ago. Seems to me there was a small amount of blood, at least the tatto artist kept dabbing at his work. What is your INR level?
Have you mentioned the warfarin therapy to the tatto artist?

Hi Chris,
have you phoned tatooist for his opinion?
I had one done some years back - pre warfarin - and don't remember bleeding.

Chris - I thought of getting a tattoo a couple of years back but when I told the artist I was on Warfarin he refused to do it, which probably tells you it ain't such a great idea! Also I have to say that now I'm really glad he stopped me! Probably best avoided while you're on Warfarin and definitely discuss it with your specialist first.

I got my first tattoo last summer pre-warfarin and I bled. It's pretty typical to bleed. I'll be on warfarin for the rest of my life and I have every intention of being inked once again. There is still some work I want done on the one from last summer. I think it would be like any other procedure, you go off the warfarin for a couple of days, double your dose after the tattoo, and then back to normal. See what your doc says, though.

Thanks for all the information.

I think may be its a better idea not to get inked!

I would bleed and i think the take a few days of warfarin and then double dosing isnt the way forward. Most tattoo artists may be ingorant to the effects of warfarin and just want the money.

oh well, not to worry, you lot be safe and take care.

Chris in a some what surprising rather warm north east of Scotland.

i have been thinking about getting a small tattoo, kist the word dad on my wrist (outside of) as a memory for my dad who died 6 months ago, i have 5 other tattoos but they were all done pre warfarin, i am on warfarin for life now, but i had one done taking asprin and it didn't bleed much more than the other, although i am waiting on medical advise before i go ahead and book it because after consultation with the tattooist, they did say it may bleed the ink out, in which case there would be no point having it done as it would look naff.

I have never thought of the scenario where the ink would just bleed out.

Fair comment tho as i sit here and ponder.

It seems to be the thing that it would just bleed out however small the tattoo is.

Be Safe

Chris-

When I was on coumadin for 9 months I did get a tattoo. I told my tattoo artist to forwarn him and he said it was fine. I got my tattoo on my left shoulder and it was fine for me. I would get other opinions first but I felt like I did not want to spend my life being a slave to this health issue and all my other health problems for that matter!!

What's the rush - the parlour will still be there!

I don't regret mine - which I had after splenectomy for ITP (poor clotting) and pre-dvt (warfarin) but dont think i'd risk it whilst on the meds

Do you not have enough colour on your leg(s) alone?
