Have DVT-How active or inactive should I be?

I found out I have a DVT in my right thigh approximately 3 weeks ago as a result of have foot surgery and being sedentary for 2 months and could not understand why my leg practically doubled in size when trying to walk again.
I was in the hospital for 6 days taking lovonox and coumadin and will need to be on coumadin for 6 months. I need to know how much activity I should resume if at all. I am currently out on disability and do not want to return to work if I am still at a high risk. Some people say it's ok to keep moving and others say not to move too much so it is confusing.

Hey Dawn--It does get confusing doesn't it? You should not move much during the first 2-3 weeks and then begin resuming slowly. It takes 4+ weeks for the clot to adhere to the vessel wall and not be a risk for breaking loose into a pulmonary embolism (PE) to your lung. Take care.

Hi dawn...
Your story sounds about like me. In 2000 I had surgery on my foot in April and was off of it for about 2 months. At the end of my 7 weeks I tried to go back to work just part time. On my 2 day back bammm....My leg did just like yours..
and you know the rest of the story. Is your DVT big? By the time I realized what was wrong with my leg I had clot from almost my entire left leg. It took a longggg time for it to get better. Make SURE and wear your compression stockings...You will find out what I difference it makes in wearing them...they are ugly and hot, but a life saver foryour leg. My 1sst blood clot I was pretty much on bed rest for a while, get up to go to the restroom...but not walk around a lot. I guess it depends of what your dr's orders are. Write back again, I would enjoy writing to you since our DVT were from simular sugery...
I wish you the best of luck...Just dont push it too soon too fast!!
