pain and shortness of breath

Hi. I am a 44 yr. old woman not overweight or on birth control pills.
Since February of this year I have been short of breath. The shortness
of breath is all the time not just when I do physical activity. I did
notice pain in my left calf but had no swelling or redness. But I did
notice a blood vessel in that area. Well the shortness of breath seems
to be getting worse and for the last few days in that same leg I have
pain but now behind my knee on the right side and up the front of my
leg. But there is still no redness or swelling. When I try to take a
deep breath I become very dizzy and feel like I'm about to pass out.
Could this be dvt that has been going on since February?

Hi Sandra, I am a 44 yr old male who was recently diagnosed with two DVTs in my
right leg, both below the knee. The DVTs were both 10cms long. I had no swelling
or redness, just a painful calf muscle.

You definatelylooking need to get to hospital and get checked out. I don't mean to
worry you, but the shortness of breath may be because you have a pulmonary
embolism, which is a clot in the lung. These usually occur when a piece of an
untreated clot in the leg or arm breaks away and travels to the lungs.

Get yourself checked out urgently!

Thanks for the replies. The shortness of breath has been going on for
months and seems to be getting somewhat worse so I wonder if it could
really be from a blood clot. When I take a deep breath I get dizzy and
have pain on my right side behind my breast. So, if it doesn't get
better soon I will go to dr. If there is a clot in my lung will a chest
xray show it? And thanks again!

Hi Sandra. I'm a relatively healthy 42 yr old male and was diagnosed 4 weeks ago
with multiple PE's from a massive DVT in my right leg with similar symptoms to
what you have described so YES this can really happen from a blood clot.

I went we'll over a month with shortness of breath and coughing with insignificant
pains in my leg that would come and go. A medical clinic dr thought I had asthma
and prescribed medication that did nothing. A week later I collapsed on a plane
as it was pulling away from the gate. I was sure I was having a heart attack and
luckily a dr on board told the flight crew that I needed immediate medical
attention so they returned to the gate and I was sent to the closest hospital. My
heart was 3x's my normal rate and I needed oxygen to prevent me from passing
out... They did many tests (X-rays, ultrasound, CT scan, ECG, EKG) and found
may large clots in my lungs and the massive DVT in my right leg). During the ECG
they also found a clot was in my heart (but was not blocking any arteries).....

I was on thrombolytic therapy (TPA) before starting anticoagulant therapy
(Heparin then Xarelto)... Luckily I spent just one week in the hospital and a week
in a hotel room resting (happened away from home) .. I'm home now and even
back to work in a limited capacity although I still have many hurdles in front of
me.

All my treating physicians said I was very lucky to be alive as it came down to a
matter of minutes...... I now wish I had gone to the hospital at the point you are
describing.
