Hi Angela,
My experience was that the pain got alot worse before it got better.
I was scared too because the worst pain came after I went on coumadin.
So, instead of feeling better, I remember almost screaming one night from the pain. It will get better. Hang in there. Just take one day at a time and do the best you can.

My experience is the same as Linda's; the pain got worse before it got better. In my case, I could absolutely do nothing without severe pain for at least 3 weeks. It eventually became tolerable, but the pain did not go away completely for several months. Hang in there, it will get better.

Hi Angela,

I was diagnosed with my second DVT March 23 2010 in my right leg from groin to knee. The pain started out feeling like I pulled my groin muscle, then my leg got heavier with the groin pain, then I would get dizzy when I walked. I went to the hospital on the 23rd, and from that day to approximately April 25th or so the pain was pretty intense. The first three weeks I wasnt able to get around without hanging on to whatever I could find, taking Tylenol 2's every 4 hours and keeping my leg away from anything that would touch my inner thigh.
After the first month, it was sore everyday but I could deal with it without having to take pain medications. Sitting for long periods of time is still difficult. I was prescribed compression stockings at the beginning of June which does help some, but doesnt get rid of all of the pain. As of today's date, it is still sore everyday.
The first one I had in the other leg was fine after one month. Will really just depend on you.

To answer the next part of your question, I went back to work 6 days after I was diagnosed though if I was smarter I would have waited 2 weeks. I didnt have paid sick time so the one week I did take off cost me enough that I forced myself to go into work and since I sit in an office all day, I found a way to manage myself through it with pain meds. It will really depend what you do, and how much you can tolerate. I'd say pace yourself and dont push yourself too hard.

Hi all! When I was first diagnosed with a DVT behind my right knee back in January this year, I must admit that I did not really understand what the 'recovery' process would entail- in fact, I was virtually told that I had a DVT, that it was potentially life-threatening, but to go away and take the drugs!! I am so glad I found this site, I have learned so much.
Anyway.. after nearly 7 months on the usual heparin/warfarin, I have to say that, like you all, the pain have become progressively worse, extending from my bottom to my calf. It is made worse by siiting still- approx 30 minutes does for me! To make matters worse, I drive about 50000 miles a year, so something will have to change. Angela- I have been advised that DVT can be classed as disabling, so your employer must try to accommodate your condition ie reasonable breaks so you can take a walk- if they are not seen to do this, they could well find themselves in trouble for disability discrimation. I am about to ask my employer of 11 years to allow me more flexible working (maybe working from home a couple of days per week), so fingers crossed, eh?
Take care.

I was diagnosed with a dvt of the poplitiel vein last Tuesday and came out of the hospital on Saturday on Coumadin. I was in so much pain at home than in the hospital, I thought something was wrong. I took tylenol for the past 2 days and my leg is no longer throbbing in pain but it still hurts to put weight on it. I'm happy I found this site. Everyone's comments are helpful. I will need to go back to work next week after being out for two weeks and hopefully I will not be in too much pain.

I had a left leg DVT diagnosed in February. The pain was not so bad once i started treatment. the dvt was "extensive", but i didn't take all the pain pills i was given. that said, there is still a small amount of pain most of the time (even right at this moment). I did not miss any work.

Angela, I wish I could say all is wonderfull after you leave the hosp. & start on thinners, but that would be a lie. I am 33, and was released from a 4 1/2 day stay @ the hosp. with a left leg DVT that went from behind my knee up to my groin. Now some 5 or 6 weeks latter, the pain is worse than it was 6 weeks ago! All the Doc says is to "Take it easy & tough it out. The Cumaden is the best we can do. Take Tylonol if the pain is too great."
Dangit this just plain sucks!!!

Thank u ladies. Your answers were helpful...
I was in hospital for 14 days for severe DVT in my right foot, it also developed to pulmonary embolisis. Pain was unbearable with every breath. Now i am home, leg up all the time. I cannot step on it but i m am managing to move around in the house. It is painful, i admit...
I read the Warfarin leaflet and noticed the "hair loss" side effect. I am worried about that. I noticed this in the hospital. I am going to check with my dr.about the Biotin. I am wearing the stockings all day long. It is not practical but better than to end up with 2 different sized legs. I am wondering too how long i should stay at home before resuming my work. I cannot risk losing it....Maybe Angela could help me in telling me when she went back to work since she had it on July 3rd. Keep well all of u....

I think I may have DVT but the doctors just gave me tramadol that didn't work and yet I have all the symptoms of DVT. I've been in excruciating pain for about four months and I don't know what to do about it.

I went to the fracture clini on Monday after injuring my knee on holiday. I happened to mention to the Dr that I had pain in my calf so he sent me for a DVT scan. It reveiled that I had 5 veins that were completly blocked so 5 DVTs. They have put me on wafarin and daily injections until my level is between 2 and 3. I also have to go for daily blood tests untill my level is stable. The pain these past few days has been excruciating and nothing I do helps it. I am just hoping it will go soon.
Shirley - I would go back to your Dr and request a DVT scan, you are in your rights to request it. Good Luck. xx

I work for an airline and flew to So. Korea. When I got there I got some bad news from home and had to fly right back. Upon landing, I noticed there was pain in my calf. I went to my doctor and had an ultra-sound done. Sure enough- DVT in left leg. I have been dealing with the pain since last October of 2010. It still hurts. I was told that, "This is your life. Learn to live with it."

I hope that it will get better. I am hopefull but also have my doubts. It really sucks to be in pain everyday.

I am just recovering from a dvt, which happened just before Christmas.I had a
prp injection on 6th December, which was for a chronic knee injury, and had to
wear a leg brace, that was to support the calf and stop me from bending my
leg,for two weeks,it was soft but boned like a corset, and I could only take it off
to shower,my point is,that I think that was what caused the dvt,I think I perhaps
had it a little to tight,as it had 4velcro straps on to fasten it,so if you are going to
have a prp injection, take note!I noticed that my leg felt a bit cold,so I thought
perhaps the brace was too tight,so I loosened it,but this was just the start of the
dvt, then came all the pain in my left calf,I actually thought that I had pulled a
muscle, wheeling myself back and forth,on my office typist chair,as couldn't put
any weight on it,for 4 weeks,so push in myself around with my good leg,I
thought I had pulled a muscle,by holding the bad leg up each time I was on this
chair,but no,it was the dvt,and four days later,on Christmas eve morning,the
pain was so excrutiating in my calf,I nearly passed out,it is just like having
cramp in your calf,or leg,but 50 times worse,so,I rang my out of hours GP,and
they sent two paramedics to assess me,they didn't mess around, they rang for an
ambulance immediately, and I was in hospital very quickly,I had lots of tests, and
a scan,and put on warfarin that afternoon,but I couldn't understand,why after
about 3 days, that I was in almost as much pain,as when I was admitted into the
hospital, even a few days later,it only then began to subside, and nearly six
weeks later, still on the warfarin of course,I still have a very slight pain In my
calf, but nothing like the first week!As for the recovery,it is just going to take
time,as I also have the added complication,of the recovery from the prp
injection.so if you have any symptoms,or worries,do not hesitate,to call a
doctor, and don't mess around ringing NHS Direct, answering question after
question,as they only refer you to the paramedics anyway, the paramedic woman
told me that they call them NHS re-direct!,so ring for an ambulance,if you're not
sure,as this could save your life! Hope this info helps people out there?

Hi
I was diagnosed with a small clot in my lower leg October 2011. The pain is still there. The last scan showed the clot had gone. I returned to the doc's this week & he said it could be like this for maybe another 6 month's or even year's. He just gave me more pill's. The cold weather doesn't help. Is this what other people have experienced?
