What else can I do?

Having been taken off warfarin after the standard 6 month treatment my leg is still slightly swollen and discoloured, and sometimes painful.

I wear the compression hosiery which help and do exercise but I just wanted to see if anyone could recommend if there was anything else that I could do or take to reduce my chances of getting another clot.

Prior to my dvt I used to take cod liver oil and glucosamine - would it be ok to start to take these again or is there something better?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Post Thrombotic Syndrome (PTS) is often a problem after a DVT. This is the result of the damage left behind by the clot (valves, etc.). Wearing compression stockings do help and in some cases over time "may" reverse the damage; to some degree.

As far as preventatives, the only "legitimate" vitamin/supplement which has been studies which may help it Vitamin "E". I have to say, this study, done by Harvard Medical, is for women only who are not on anticoagulants. Here is a link that provides more information:

Fish Oil, though it affects INR for those on Coumadin, more so has been shown to possibly prevent arterial clots but not venous clot.

Hi Paula,

I see you and I are both Warfarin free now. Yippy! I'm sure you and and I, and many others, will be very conscious of unusual feelings in our legs, or any where else for that matter. But what a great feeling, to know that we made it through it all.

I know you've medically done everything you can, for your legs but have you thought about physiotherapy, message therapy and the one thing that makes my legs feel really good, is a pedicure! The ladies in the shop I go to do a wonderful job of the pedicure, and they always give a brisk rub of your shines, calf's and a really deep massage of the bottom of your feet. My legs feel really good after.

I know the physio and the message can get a little expensive but if you include it as part of a once a week or once a month routine, I'm sure it will all help.

I say, if it makes you feel good then do!
